Coronation Street star said ‘no one died’ after real sex in movie sparked backlash

Ex-Coronation Street star Kieran O’Brien once defended a film he made, which saw him have sex and ejaculate for real, saying: “No-one died.”

The actor, 50, played the character of Matt in the 2004 movie 9 Songs, which was showcased at Cannes Film Festival. It told the love story of a young couple, Matt, and Lisa, who was played by Margo Stilley.

At the time of release, the film caused controversy due to its explicit nature. It featured unsimulated shots of Kieran and Margo engaging in oral sex, sexual intercourse and male ejaculation.

But speaking 20 years ago, Kieran, who appeared in 15 episodes of Corrie and has also starred in Holby City and more recently Ted Lasso, defended the movie. At the time, he said that his family had had “positive reactions”.

He told the Irish Independent: “I am an actor and they see this as the same as any other job. What’s wrong with it?

“No-one died and we made a wonderful film.” However it appears audiences didn’t agree with the “wonderful” description.

The film, which runs for just longer than one hour, has a 32% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes and 4.7 stars out of 10 on IMDb. It also made just $1.6million (£1.26m) at box office.

The two stars got intimate on the first day of filming in 2003, having to kiss and take their clothes off. Kieran recalled that “it wasn’t until after lunch that we had sex”.

At the time, the movie was the most sexually explicit mainstream film – however that was before the likes of Nymphomaniac. Saucy flick 9 Songs featured masturbation with and without toys, a “footjob”, vaginal sex, and both stars performing oral sex on each other.

Kieran became the only actor to be shown ejaculating in a mainstream, UK-produced film back then too. However safety precautions were taken on-set.

He wore a condom during the vaginal sex scene to avoid any unwanted pregnancy. A condom was not used during scenes of oral sex.
