Corrie icon loved racy lesbian sex scene – and even Emily Atack wanted to ‘get off’ with her

Suranne Jones got plenty of people talking thanks to her saucy lesbian on-screen romps.

The actress shot to fame playing Karen McDonald on Coronation Street back in 2000. And since leaving the cobbles in 2004 – she’s turned her hand to an array of different projects.

In 2019, she took on the role of fearless lesbian Anne Lister in BBC One costume drama Gentleman Jack. Packed to the brim with racy scenes, it follows the true story of Anne, who sent shockwaves through the West Yorks during the Victorian era over her sexuality.

The true story is based on the real-life diary entries from Anne. She spent her life travelling the world whilst documenting her extensive amount of sexual conquests over 34 years.

As well as a string of women, viewers saw Anne get into some steamy situations with her wife Ann Walker. She is played by Peaky Blinders star Sophie Rundle.

One of the most graphic scenes is when viewers see a naked Anne spooning a woman in bed as she pleasures her from behind. Another sees her performing a sex act on a woman totally naked – with her head buried between her legs.

And it turns out Suranne didn’t mind getting down and dirty on-screen with her female co-stars. Speaking to The Sun, Suranne revealed how exactly the “intimate moments” were filmed.

The star revealed: “We used the camera to come in on us and find intimate moments, which was really great, because we were able to just play that between us like no one else was in the room. By the end me and Sophie were like two nans with a cup of tea. Like, covers off, hanging out and it was great.”

It’s fair to say viewers watching the racy drama were left flustered at the time. Over on X, then known as Twitter, one person said: “Everything about #GentlemanJack is excellent, give me all the lesbian period dramas please.”

Someone else added: “Just caught up with Gentleman Jack and couldn’t take my eyes off Suranne Jones . Great show totally gripped on this drama.” A third gushed: “Wtf that was not what I wanted to see while sat watching with my family.”

Even comedian and TV star Emily Atack couldn’t get enough of Suranne in the racy show. She wrote: “Cannot wait to want to get off with Suranne Jones after watching first ep of #GentlemanJack.”

Suranne also confessed that she knew co-star Sophie was perfect for the part in the show before she had even been cast. She added to The Sun: “We had a ‘chemistry read’ first and when Sophie was cast, I knew straight away, ‘That’s my girl’.

“Mine and Sophie’s chemistry grew as you see it in real time, throughout the eight episodes.”Suranne also mentioned why she felt the authentic role was a good fit for her, continuing: “I am a 40-year-old actress who’s looking for parts that are worthy of the 40 years that I’ve lived and my experience.”
