EastEnders viewers spot awkward Britney bike crash ‘gaffe’ in BBC soap

EastEnders viewers were left in fits after what seemed to be an audio blunder in a recent scene.

The latest instalment of the BBC soap saw Britney – who is the foster daughter of Whitney (Shona McGarty) and Zack (James Farrar) – fall off her bike after crashing into an unsuspecting Billy (Perry Fenwick) as she went off for a ride around Albert Square. As she landed, she was heard saying “No, my leg hurts” but the vocal didn’t seem to fit the scene.

Some viewers picked up on the fact it was less than smooth and reckoned it could be a clunky bit of automated dialogue replacement (ADR), which is a technique where dialogue is added into a scene after it was filmed for various reasons and isn’t always seamless.

Several took to X to comment on it after the bike scene aired, with one person teasing: “‘No my leg hurts’ we love some bad ADR.” Another viewer joked: “Whoever does EastEnders ‘ ADR needs to be sacked or retaught.”

One viewer quipped that the comical moment was “iconically s***”, and somebody else posted a string of crying with laughter emojis to show what they thought of it.

A couple of EastEnders fans said it reminded them of another ADR gaffe that aired in 2020. That scene saw actress Gillian Taylforth’s character Kathy talking to Ian Beale (Adam Woodyatt) about the Mitchell family.

At one point she turned and walked away from him carrying some food in her hands as she told him “Come on, this breakfast is important”. It was obvious that the words had been added in after she had shot the scene, with her voice sounding different to how it had sounded before and after.

The scene left viewers screaming with laughter when it aired, and some thought Britney’s bike moment could even rival it.

“Iconic bit of ADR in tonight’s episode, it’s giving ‘this breakfast is important’,” laughed one person on X.

“‘NO MY LEG HURTS’ vs ‘this breakfast is important’,” asked another person as X, as one viewer suggested setting up a poll to see which incident people thought was the funniest.
