Emmerdale stars face ‘toughest challenge yet’ as Charity and Mackenzie split teased

Emmerdale’s Emma Atkins and Lawrence Robb have opened up about their characters heading for a break up.

Charity and Mackenzie have been through more than most since beginning their relationship, including a number of breakups, a car crash, a cheating scandal and more. They now face their toughest challenge yet as Charity recently stabbed her husband while suffering from a night terror about Harry (Robert Beck).

Despite everything they’ve been through, fans have feared this will be the incident that rips the couple apart. In an exclusive chat with Daily Star and other press, Lawrence spoke about his stance on their soap relationship.

He said: “The last year for Charity and Mackenzie has been pretty relentless and I think this is the toughest challenge in terms of it’s nearly broken them up. But I think all of the challenges up until this point have helped them come to this slight epiphany of we love each other too much to allow life to get in the way.”

Charity and Mack could be heading for a breakup

Emma added: “It’s that thing as well if they can get through this they can literally get through anything.” Lawrence chimed in: “They’ve had the worst luck I don’t know how they’re both still standing. Car crashes, kidnappings, stabbings and that’s not even six months!”

Emma, who made her first appearance as Charity in 2000, has thrown her support behind the couple and shared her hopes that they will remain together after the stabbing ordeal. She said: “I think the beauty of Charity and Mackenzie is that they’re not particularly destructive to one another.”

The soap star continued: “Whenever they’re together they have fun and make each other laugh. There’s never a want to try and bring the other one down it’s always been to big each other up. It’s just been catastrophic effects of other circumstances.”

“I think they’re a brilliant soap couple so I’m hoping that we’ll stay together but who knows,” Emma declared. Lawrence agreed with his co-star, adding: “I echo what you’re saying and it goes back to me saying that I also hope we say together because it’s such a laugh working together.”

Charity spirals after stabbing Mackenzie

Charity spirals after stabbing Mack and Emma revealed that it’s her ex-partner Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley) who steps up and helps her. “She cuts herself off and it’s Cain who comes into the house and brings her to her senses a little bit,” the actress said. “He tells her that she needs to come out of this shell that she’s in and get help.”

Emmerdale airs weeknights on ITV1 and ITVX at 7.30pm
