Freddie Flintoff’s TV return finally confirmed with new BBC series after Top Gear crash

Freddie Flintoff is returning to screens after his harrowing car accident on Top Gear.

The former England cricketer, 46, is making his TV return with a second series of his BBC One cricket documentary Field of Dreams. The series will follow Flintoff and his young sports team, who hail from Preston, as they head on tour.

The BBC announced that Field of Dreams had been commissioned for a second series in October 2022, three months after the first series aired, but no further updates were given following Flintoff’s car crash two months later.

Discussing Flintoff’s role in the upcoming series, the BBC said: “Freddie is setting himself an even bigger challenge as he takes some of his team and a handful of fresh recruits on a new adventure.” adding that there would be four episodes.”

The athlete was seriously injured in December 2022 while filming a segment for Top Gear. At Top Gear’s test track at Dunsfold Park Aerodrome in Surrey, Flintoff crashed in a three-wheeled open-top car that had no airbags.

Wearing no helmet, he flipped the Morgan Super 3 and slid along the ice-cold track at high speed with minimal protection. The TV star had to wait 45 minutes for an air ambulance to arrive at the scene.

Flintoff suffered facial injuries and several broken ribs. The BBC apologised to Freddie in March 2023 as they announced a health and safety review of Top Gear, which had been on air since 2002.

A BBC Studios spokesperson said: “BBC Studios has reached an agreement with Freddie that we believe supports his continued rehabilitation, return to work and future plans. We have sincerely apologised to Freddie and will continue to support him with his recovery.”

It was reported that both Flintoff and the BBC were “satisfied” with the financial settlement agreed, which The Sun claimed was around £9m. Nine months after the horrific crash, Flintoff made a rare public appearance Cardiff’s Sophia Gardens in Wales, with the injuries he sustained in the accident still visible on his face.

The crash that left him “seriously emotionally and physically affected” and the BBC axed the 34th series of Top Gear following the accident.
