Good Morning Britain fans concerned as Kate Garraway replaced by co-star

Good Morning Britain viewers were left concerned when co-host Kate Garraway didn’t appear on the latest show and was replaced by Charlotte Hawkins.

Normally, 56-year-old Kate presents the programme on Thursdays and Fridays, as she did last week with Rob Rinder. Ever since Ben Shephard left to present This Morning with Cat Deeley in March, a host of guest presenters have filled his spot, with ITV taking their time to choose his long-term replacement.

Although Kate didn’t mention taking time off during last Friday’s programme, Rob told her at the beginning of the broadcast: “I don’t think I’ll be seeing you this week.” The mum-of-two hasn’t yet spoken about any break on social media, but she could be on annual for the Easter holidays like co-star Susanna Reid.

Charlotte took to X before Thursday’s show, meanwhile, to let fans know she would be on duty. Sharing a selfie with her co-star for the day, Richard Madeley, she penned: “Morning from @gmb! All the day’s news plus our debate today is whether teens should be forced to get part-time jobs – let us know what you think.”

Kate returned to her presenting job in January after a two-month break, which saw her husband Derek Draper tragically pass away after suffering a heart attack, reports the Express. Derek had been plagued by ill-health since contracting Covid-19 in 2020 in the early stages of the pandemic.

When Kate returned to her role, it was a moment filled with mixed feelings, but she was thankful for the love and support from her fellow presenters. She was soon rocked by the announcement of Ben’s departure, however, after the pair had formed a close bond after working together for several years.

Kate has been absent from social media since Easter Sunday when she hailed “new beginnings” on Instagram. In a message to her 1.2 million followers, she penned: “Happy Easter everyone! Usually we have a mega family egg hunt at my Aunty Lynne’s but this year I am actually working – although in a spectacular location & have brought the kids with me so hard to call it work.”

She continued: “Very grateful to be able to have this time and sending love to all who are working today in less glamorous locations – keeping the wheels turning for the rest of us. Hope you find some joy & new hope today & everyday xxx #hope. #newbeginnings. #love.”

In the final instalment of her documentary, Kate Garraway: Derek’s Story, it was revealed she was hospitalised with chest pains amid the stress of caring for her late husband. After it was revealed Kate had “thrown up on herself”, her producer told the cameras that “the heart scare thing” worried her.

She explained: “Kate was on her way here (to the radio show) and had pains in her chest and I think she threw up down herself in the car. It was just that moment of ‘Christ, even the woman that we thought could go on forever.”

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
