Hollyoaks star gushes over ‘gorgeous’ Nikki Sanderson as Maxine and Carter twist teased

Hollyoaks star David Ames has praised his co-star Nikki Sanderson as their on-screen characters take their relationship to the next step.

In upcoming scenes of the Channel 4 soap, Carter and Maxine discuss religion and relationship and he asks her to be his girlfriend after growing close in recent months.

However, fans will be aware that Carter secretly has feelings for John Paul McQueen (James Sutton) and he’s been taking advantage of Maxine to suppress his true sexuality.

Speaking to Daily Star, David revealed: “Carter will continue to use Maxine for the time being. Maxine and Carter are making things happen but poor old Maxine. Nikki [Sanderson] is wonderful to work with. She’s so gorgeous and we have a lot of fun but ultimately Carter is living these lies which are going to be found out.”

It’s set to be a dramatic year for Carter as he turns his attention to troubled teen Lucas Hay (Oscar Curtis). John Paul has been left suspicious of the Hollyoaks High School headteacher after attempted to practice conversion therapy on him.

Carter has since turned on John Paul as he grapples with his own sexuality, which he believes to be a sin, despite rising chemistry between the pair in recent episodes. However, he now sets his sights on counselling Lucas who himself is struggling with his identity as a gay man.

David previously opened about the importance of the soap tackling a conversion storyline, describing it as “very of-the-moment.” He said: “It’s constantly back and forth in the news at the minute that our present Conservative government are thinking of scrapping the ban on conversion therapy again, something they pledged to get rid of months, even years, ago.

“It is very important that we are illustrating quite how corrosive this practice is. Carter isn’t just a man with an evil plan, he too has been put in a position where religion has made him feel less-than and therefore it’s corrupted his mind and made him feel he needs to pass it on to those around him.

“Not only that, you see the effect it has on other men in this situation. Other people who are susceptible to those who they look up to, they’re shown the ‘way’ and usually this unfortunately takes the guise of religion.”

Hollyoaks airs weeknights on E4 at 7pm
