Inside the real-life Project X that caused £15k worth of damage and inspired hit movie

The American teen comedy film Project X first hit the theatres back in 2012 and immediately grabbed viewer’s attention.

The cult classic took its audience by surprise with its wild and outrageous story which many suspect mirrored a real-life event that took place four years earlier. The film, directed by Nima Nourizadeh, follows the lives of three friends named Thomas, Costa and J.B who embark on a mission to become the most popular guys in school.

In order to achieve their celebrity status on the school grounds, the trip planned to organise an unforgettably party that will be talked about for years. But it doesn’t take long before their plans spirals out of control, sending them into a series of hilarious and chaotic situations.

Originally, the title Project X was intended to be a placeholder, but its mysterious nature garnered a mass of interest which prompted filmmakers to keep it. The casting process involved a nationwide call to allow a wave of new talent to walk through their doors.

Filming took place on Los Angeles sets over a span of five weeks with a tight budget of $12million (£9.5million). The film presents itself as a home video captured by the host to add to its authentic found footage style, similar to that of the 1999 hit horror film, The Blair Witch Project.

Since the comedy hit the cinemas, thousands of viewers were left scratching their heads over the similarity between the film and a similar news story which dominated headlines back in 2008. As the box office hit marks its 12th anniversary, Daily Star has taken a deep dive inside the real-life story that may have inspired movie makers.

It is understood that the frame of the story is based on a true event that occurred in Melbourne, Australia involving a teenager named Corey Delaney. On January 12, the 16-year-old was home alone in the suburb of Narre Warren when his mother and stepfather Joanne and Stephen Delaney jetted off on holiday in Queensland.

Before the left, the doting parents made their son promise not to throw any wild parties while they were away. But the rebellion teenager quickly went back on his world and jumped on social media to start arranging his wild party.

Writing on his MySpace and MSN accounts, Corey wrote: “Parents away, tell your mates, you don’t want to miss it, it’s gonna be huge.” The event soon spread like wild fire online, with hundreds of people turning up for the big bash.

It is estimated that around 500 teenagers in the neighbourhood turned up to the party to wreak havoc on his family home. It’s fair to say underage drinking, no supervision and a mass of teenagers was always going to be a recipe for disaster.

At the time, it was reported that teenagers were spotted wandering the streets throwing bricks and glass, jumping on parked cars, breaking letterboxes and vandalising front lawns all night. As the event spiralled out of control, police turned up at the address with a dog squad and a helicopter to disperse the madness.

The damage done to both the residential and police property was massive, forcing Corey’s parents to cut their romantic getaway short and rush home to resolve the situation. The police considered presenting Corey with a $20,000 (£15,600) fine for the cost of the callout alone.

But things went from bad to worse when Corey appeared on the US talk show A Current Affair. The teen could be seen wearing a faux-fur jacket with no shirt underneath which he paired with a colourful flat-brimmed hat and a pair of yellow sunglasses.

His TV interview went viral online

The now infamous interview consists of Leila McKinnon trying – and failing – to convey the seriousness of the situation to him. When he was asked to share his thoughts on the night’s events, he confessed: “I can’t remember. I was just off my head.”

When the host asked Corey what he would say to other kids who were thinking of partying while their parents were out of town, he replied: “Get me to do it for you.” Understandably, his parents were horrified at his actions.

His mother later told the press: “We are absolutely disgusted that he [Corey] could do this, not only to us but to this neighbourhood.” The clip soon went viral and was viewed by millions of people all over the world.

Filmmakers have not responded to suspicions behind the inspiration for their hit movie. The film was later crowned 2012’s Most Illegally Downloaded Film by internet protocol service, BitTorrent.
