Kate Garraway met man who Derek Draper ‘saved’ at his funeral in emotional moment

Kate Garraway had a touching encounter at the funeral of Derek Draper with a man whose life her late husband had saved.

During Good Morning Britain on Monday (February 5), emotional Kate recounted this heartfelt meeting to Susanna Reid and Richard Madeley. The 56-year-old star revealed that Derek, who sadly passed away on January 3 after suffering a heart attack triggered by long Covid, had trained as a therapist earlier in his life.

While paying final respects to Derek, a man disclosed to Kate that her husband had saved his life at a time when he was considering taking it. According to the mourner, he’d been unable to share this story earlier due to obligatory therapy secrecy, but felt compelled to reveal it to Kate following Derek’s passing.

As Kate shared: “There was somebody there [the funeral], who I met for the first time, who’s life Derek had saved through therapy.” He confided in her, “I’ve never been allowed to tell you this before because of the rules surrounding therapy, but Derek stopped me from killing myself and I’m here today because of him’.”

Fighting back tears on GMB, Kate mentioned a Book of Condolences, which Susanna had thoughtfully organised. She stated: “My emotions are at 110 percent. The unbelievable love that we all have as a GMB family and ITV family – you’re going to make me cry already.”

“The ITV family and viewers at home are connected in joys and the challenges of life, that poor Derek has faced head on.” When talking about Derek, she expressed: “His spirit and fight to keep going… he never once said I don’t want to try, I don’t want to do this or that, and the children as well.”

She let slip that Derek had been doing well before his heart attack and they, as a family, were “the furthest from the spectre of death that we’d ever been”. Kate reflected: “It was one of those stop the clock moments. You want the world to stop. The vacuum you feel at that point. It swamps you.”Darcey’s touching message to her father before he passed away was also shared by Kate.
