Katie Price ‘lost for words’ over doctor’s ‘cruel’ comment about Harvey’s blindness

Katie Price was left utterly gobsmacked by a doctor’s brutal remark about her son Harvey’s blindness.

The former glamour model, 43, opened up about the shocking moment that came when doctors were researching her eldest son’s visual impairment. The mum-of-five, who was a first-time single mum in the late 90s following her split from former footie star Dwight Yorke, previously tried to keep that part of their life quiet.

But, in her tell-all book, Katie Price: Harvey and Me, the TV personality has delved into this difficult period. After Katie delivered Harvey, she started to notice significant stints in his development.

It didn’t take long before the doting mum sought help from top doctors across the globe to help work out Harvey’s health complications. Katie attended countless doctors appointments to get to the bottom of the problem, but it’s fair to say not all of them went smoothly.

In her latest memoir, the Celebrity Big Brother winner recalled a horrific encounter with one of USA’s most respected optometrists, who confirmed that Harvey was blind and would likely stay that way for good.

Recalling the shocking moment a doctor blamed her son’s condition on her mixed-race relationship, she fumed: “I’ll never forget what she said next. ‘You shouldn’t mix black and white,’ she told us.”

Baffled, Katie pressed for an explanation, asking: “‘What do you mean? ‘ I said. I was completely stunned. And she just simply said, ‘This is what happens when you’re a white woman with a black man’.”

The usually outspoken mum was left speechless by the doctor’s “cruel comment”. Upon discovering her son was truly blind, Katie’s trademark fiery demeanour faded as concerns for her son’s future emerged.

Harvey was subsequently diagnosed with Septo-optic Dysplasia, a condition affecting his sight, in addition to autism and Prader-Willi syndrome, which result in learning difficulties and behavioural issues.

Never one to shy away from a fight, she now advocates fiercely for her son’s rights, ensuring he has access to higher education, independent living and opportunities like any other child. Katie’s documentary, Katie Price: Harvey and Me, highlighted their journey and even earned a nomination at the National Television Awards.

It comes after Katie gave fans a glimpse inside her Mucky Mansion today as she revealed plans for yet another makeover. She gave fans an insight into her cinema room looking rundown.

Piles of rubbish could be seen dotted around the place – less than a year after she transformed it for her Channel 4 show. The room looks a far cry away from its glam transformation, with padding around the huge TV falling from the walls.
