Mark Ruffalo, 56, worried he was ‘too old’ to go near Emma Stone’s ‘hairy business’

Mark Ruffalo was worried he was “too old” to star in sex scenes with his Poor Things co-star Emma Stone.

In the new movie, Avengers star Mark, 56, plays wayward lawyer Duncan Wedderburn, who seduces 35-year-old Emma’s character Bella Baxter away from her life in London to tour the world with him. In graphic scenes, the pair are seen enjoying themselves in various positions around a hotel room, fully naked.

But despite earning his acting chops long ago, Mark was worried about the new role. He confessed to Perfect magazine: “I didn’t know if I could pull this off. I’ve never done anything like this before. So, like, the sex scenes… Am I too old to be doing that kind of stuff? Does anyone want to see that?”

The star also shared his concerns for Variety’s Actors on Actors series, fretting: “I was like, ‘Do I have to?’ All I can hear is, ‘Nobody wants to see your old a** anymore. Maybe you shouldn’t be doing movies like that anymore’.

“I mean, it’s my least favorite part of it, but I also saw it as very comedic and also, like, an extension of the physical comedy that we were already finding. So it was just another way to tell the story.”

In the film, Duncan becomes intimately acquainted with what Bella terms her “hairy business” as she undergoes a journey of self-discovery and sexual freedom. But Mark was so nervous for the role he requested some extra padding.

He told his Marvel pal Robert Downey Jr. in the Variety video: “Do you know I had an a** pad in? My legs were, like, four inches bigger. My calf was four inches.”

Mark explained that director Yorgos Lanthimos “really wanted the silhouette”, adding: “So I was wearing a corset with shoulder pads, so I was so squeezed in. It was even more extreme. [Lanthimos] wanted me to look like a bird, so I had this whole built-out chest piece that never made it because it was just too much.”

Emma, meanwhile, had no such qualms about stripping off. She even came up with ideas for the raunchy scenes, with Yorgos telling The Irish Times: “Talking, for example, about the sex scenes that might have been the most awkward or uncomfortable. I remember us sitting down the days before and coming up with all the different styles we were going to do.

“So we decided, ‘Oh, we should do this part’. And, ‘Oh, someone should be humping her leg’. Ha ha! She came up with a lot of the stuff that we did.” Yorgos added that he finds it “strange” that sex is “such a taboo”, explaining: “It was never an issue for me.”

But the “misogynistic” movie left a sour taste in this reporter’s mouth – and its sex scenes were so raunchy it had people walking out of the cinema. Check out the Daily Star’s review here.
