Nickelodeon refused to cut ‘sexualised’ Victorious scene despite teen star’s concern

Danielle Monet shared concerns about a scene in Victorious which she believed was too sexual.

The actress was a teenager when she landed the role of Trina Vega on Nickelodeon’s Victorious in 2010. During an interview with Insider, the 34-year-old looked back at her time on the American sitcom, which she labelled as “very PC, funny, silly, friendly, chill,” – most of the time.

Monet claimed that Dan Schneider – the creator of some of Nickelodeon’s most popular shows, including Victorious, Zoey 101, iCarly andDrake & Josh – created unnecessary sexualised content on the show.

In one specific scene, she ate a pickle while applying lip gloss. Monet expressed discomfort to Nickelodeon about the scene being too sexual, but the network dismissed her concerns and aired it anyway.

“Do I wish certain things, like, didn’t have to be so sexualised?” she said. “Yeah. A hundred percent.” She insisted Insider that Schneider was not solely to blame for the sexualized scenes, referencing his male-dominated writers.

The Zoey 101 star also admitted that she felt some of the costume choices for the young cast were “not age appropriate”. Daniella, who was the oldest actress on set at the time, said: “I wouldn’t even wear some of that today as an adult.”

A person close to Dan Schneider – the creator of some of Nickelodeon’s most popular shows, including Victorious , Zoey 101 , iCarly andDrake & Joshclaimed that all costumes “were seen and approved by dozens of people, including the parents of the actors, and the state-licensed teachers on set.”

However, former Nickelodeon costume designer Kerry Mellin claimed that the young actors were apprehensive about voicing concern with their outfits. She told Insider: “It’s an imbalance of power.”

This came one month after iCarly star Jennette McCurdy opened up about the inappropriate behaviour she was exposed to while on set. The 31-year-old catapulted to fame after she was cast as Carly Shay’s hilarious best friend, Sam Puckett, at the age of 15, when the programme first aired in 2007.

In her personal memoir, I’m Glad My Mom Died, the former actress recalled someone named “the Creator” massaging her shoulders. She was also reportedly forced to wear a bikini and consume alcohol while she was underage.
