Sex scenes that went wrong – ‘real’ orgasm, whiplash and ‘millions’ of cuts

Sex scenes in a film can go one of two ways when seen by an audience – viewers can either lap it up or find it cringeworthy.

Parts of movies where intimacy is required can also have the same reaction for the actors shooting the scenes. For some actors, it is not that much of an issue, while for others, some have had less than desirable experiences whilst filming.

And especially for some well-known sex scenes to have hit the cinemas, the actors who starred in the racy scenes have said it is anything but. Some have even been severely injured as they try to get the level of intimacy and boundaries right.

So, as more steamy flicks are set to hit the screen soon, Daily Star looks at some of the films where sex scenes went wrong.

Whiplash during filming

Sultry and seductive, cinema-goers were practically begging for a film adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey, as the book’s raunchy description of sex, kinks and fetishes stunned readers. However, for actress Dakota Johnson, filming the iconic moments in the Red Room were not as enthralling as viewers saw it.

Looking back on her filming of the movie, she said that she was left “a bit shell-shocked” by shooting the scenes – and who could blame her. Filming required multiple takes of the same gruelling scenes, but also left the actress with whiplash during a particularly intense shoot.

She recalled: “I got whiplash once from [fellow actor, Jamie Dornan] throwing me on the bed. So f***ing painful. And I wish we had a gag reel from the shoot.”

Dakota, who played Anastasia Steele in the movie, went on to reveal that one of the scenes had to be filmed 17 times and that afterwards, she could not move her neck. When asked why, she explained it was because her head had been pulled back and forth so many times.

Injuries galore

During particularly enthralling and passionate sex scenes, actors are told to go hell for leather. However, this can lead to issues from the actors themselves, including James McAvoy, who admitted he nearly “smashed” his knee in during a vigorous sex scene.

However, a particularly painful experience that was caught during filming was from Aussie bombshell Margot Robbie. Whilst shooting the smash hit The Wolf of Wall Street, Robbie was meant to have sex on a bed of cash with lead actor Leonardo DiCaprio.

Though the scene itself was rather racy, for both Leo and Margot, it was anything but. Explaining to the Daily Beast about shooting the intimate moment, she exclaimed: “I got a million paper cuts on my back from all that money!”

Warning people off the idea of romping on cash, she continued: “Maybe real money is a bit softer but the fake money is like paper and when I got up off the bed, I turned around to get my robe and everyone gasped.

“I said, ‘What is it?’ And they said, ‘You look like you’ve been whipped a million times. Your back is covered in a thousand red scratches.”

Accidental orgasms

Twilight star Robert Pattinson captured the hearts of teenagers galore when he played the role of Edward Cullen in the film adaptation of novel series. But it was one of his other films that fans got more than they bargained for when Robert had a real orgasm during a sex scene.

In 2008, Robert took on the role of iconic Spanish surrealist painter Salvador Dalí in the film Little Ashes. During the filming, it was announced there would be a sex scene and – not wanting to ruin his career at an early stage – Pattinson admitted that he was going to have to go all in to prove his ability for roles.

He was later asked why he chose not to fake the fleeting moment of euphoria, to which he responded: “Try it, I can tell you right now, no chance. It just doesn’t work.”
