Shelley Duvall fumes Hollywood ‘turned’ on her in rare interview after 22 year hiatus

Shelley Duvall has revealed why she decided to leave Hollywood for over two decades.

Fans will remember the horror icon from films like The Shining and Frankenweenie. Duvall has returned from her over two decade acting hiatus and spoke to The New York Times about how Hollywood “hurt” her.

She told the publication: “I was a star, I had leading roles. People think it’s just ageing, but it’s not. It’s violence.” Shelley hinted that people would appear nice but then “turn on her on a dime” and stated: “You would never believe it unless it happens to you. That’s why you get hurt, because you can’t really believe it’s true.”

It was revealed that Duvall, who suffers with diabetes and a swollen foot regularly sleeps in her car and stores pictures from her acting days in the vehicle’s glove box. Dan Gilroy, Shelley’s partner for 30 years, also spoke about the actress’ career.

He admitted to being worried about the actress when she sleeps in her car and explained that Duvall’s home was destroyed during an earthquake in 1994. As a result, she moved to Texas in hopes of a fresh start – however, according to Gilroy she “started becoming afraid of things”.

Dan said Shelley began to “think she was being attacked” and called the FBI to ask for help, which is then her condition “went south”. Despite her struggles, Duvall is making a return to the spotlight in The Forest Hills which is set to be released later this year.

She will star alongside Edward Furlong, Chiko Mendez and Dee Wallace in the horror film which follows a man experiencing visions after a head injury sustained during a camping trip. Fans have been waiting for the film’s release since last year as one Reddit user posted a thread asking about the film’s release date.

Another user who claims to be the director, although this has not been confirmed, replied: “[…] Since it is an independent film, we are in the process of distribution. It takes time from offers to deals and then the release,” later stating that the film should be expected in 2024.
