Simon Cowell addresses X Factor return rumours and says there would be ‘changes’

Simon Cowell wants X Factor to make its grand return.

The music mogul has claimed he knows the secret ingredient that could catapult the show back to the top spot on the TV ratings chart. The singing competition once stood tall as the most successful programme in the country, but over time, it gradually faded into insignificance.

However, with determination running through his veins, the man renowned as the toughest judge on TV is confident he can bring the programme back with a bang. And while instantaneously some might think that this means the Londoner has a million and one ideas up his sleeve, it doesn’t. In reality, his plan is much simpler.

At the peak of its powers, 14 million people settled down on their sofas with a takeaway curry and watched the likes of Leona Lewis, Leon Jackson, and James Arthur sing their hearts out in a bid to earn the public’s votes.

The show was everywhere, with all sides of the spectrum interested in the final result. The storylines were the talk of primary schools all the way up to retirement homes. To put it simply, everyone was hooked. However, over the years, the show lost its way, adding unnecessary drama and over-the-top reality-TV-esque scripting, which lost the audience in a big way.

Ultimately, the viewers showed their lack of interest with their remotes and stopped watching the programme that had such a significant presence on a Saturday night. So, with that in mind, Cowell thinks bringing the show back to basics would be enough to spring it back into its place at the pinnacle of the mountain.

In an interview with OK, he explained: “I think it would be taken back to basics. When we first started, it was pretty uncomplicated, but over the years, too many elements were added; it lost its identity somewhere.”

Alongside reality TV favourites like Cheryl Cole, Sharon Osbourne and Louis Walsh, Cowell served as a mentor to some of the most successful artists of the last two decades, and for this reason, he believes the show has an essential place in the TV schedule.

He explained: “Yes, you might hear some people say they were unhappy or thought they might sell more records, but I am proud of how many people got a start after being on the show.”

However, before he sits back down on the judging panel, he’ll focus on a new project, which it’s fair to say, he’s extremely excited about.

He beamed: “I am going to do something brand new. It’s going to be hard work, but I’m excited about it. I haven’t signed the contract yet, so I can say no more.”
