Sugababes star issues grovelling apology to fans over group’s ‘promotion’ of sugar

Sugababes star Mutya Buena has apologised to fans for the band’s apparent promotion of sugar.

The 38-year old, who won back the rights to perform under the group’s name with fellow original bandmates Keisha Buchanan and Siobhan Donaghy in 2019, shared a bizarre video to Instagram on Wednesday (March 13).

Speaking to her 109,000 followers, Mutya explained: “Hey guys, it’s me, Mutya. I just want to address a few things I’ve seen online about me, as loads of you have messaged me about what’s happening with me and the band.

“Now I want to apologise. For ages I’ve been accidentally promoting sugar by being a member of the globally successful band that has the word sugar in it. We made people think sugar was cool, but it really, really isn’t.”

Closing the clip, Mutya added: “Sugar is not cool and now I can confirm that I am definitely a changed woman. I hope you can find it in your hearts to forgive me, but once again, I am truly, truly sorry.”

Fans were quick to respond, meanwhile, seemingly unsure what had prompted the apology. “I’m confused what have you got to be sorry about girl for being a successful woman in the industry,” one user wrote.

Another added: “I don’t know what you’re talking about. So yes I forgive you.” A third asked: “So are you gonna be called Waterbabes now? That would be cool.” And a fourth declared: “So much responsibility being in the public eye you can’t say anything these days. Keep doing you girl.”

Last year Mutya opened up on her 2005 exit from the band, admitting she couldn’t revert back to a “normal job” in the same way Siobhan had four years earlier due to the level of her fame. “Siobhan had the blessing of a little bit of normality,” Mutya said. “I wish I had the opportunity to work somewhere else.

“My whole life has been in the industry, since I was 14. I couldn’t have done anything else because people would recognise me. I wish I had pushed myself to brave enough to do other things. I’ve done online courses where I learnt how to do nails, hair and beauty.”

Mutya continued: “I’d love to work behind a desk in the office, in the right job I’d be out there. But I have one of them obvious faces so people would know wherever I go.”

Keisha followed Siobhan and Mutya out of the Sugababes door in 2009, meanwhile, meaning its lineup at the time was made up entirely of non-original members. The trio reunited in 2012, but were unable to perform under the Sugababes banner, however, as their replacements Heidi Range, Amelle Berrabah and Jade Ewen had kept the name alive.
