Sydney Sweeney transforms into pregnant ‘virgin’ nun for horror in bathtub scenes

Sydney Sweeney’s newest project is a far cry from her usual roles.

Immaculate follows Cecila, a “devoutly religious woman” who is offered a place at a well known and respected convent in the Italian countryside. However, soon after arriving Ceclia’s life takes a wild turn and horrors beyond her comprehension ensue.

The trailer shows Sweeney’s character in the middle of an ultrasound as the doctor explains she is pregnant. By the trailer and the name of the film, her pregnancy is assumed to be an “immaculate conception,” which is described as “the belief that the Virgin Mary was free of original sin from the moment of her conception.

Scenes play out that show Sydney’s character covered in blood and screaming while her fellow convent members appear to judge from the sidelines. In one scene, Sweeney is shown wearing a white dress while bathing in a bathtub and retching over the side.

In another, Sydney wears the same white dress as she lays on her back and floats in a large body of water, her growing baby bump clearly visible.

Sweeney helped co-develop the film and is a producer with her company Fifty-Fity. She spoke to Vanity Fair about making the movie and said: “That was the first movie that I produced myself and the experience as a whole I’ll never forget because I was so active in my role. I had so much to say and I was casting and location scouting and revisiting the script and helping set up shots and helping edit the movie.”

The star said she was “fully immersed in the whole entire process” and branded it “such an incredible experience”. Sydney is known for her iconic blonde hair, which she rocked for the 2024 horror mystery.

She also told Vanity Fair: “I filmed [Echo Valley] right after Anyone But You, but I’ll backtrack. Immaculate is my natural hair colour, then for Anyone But You I added a little bit of highlights to it, and then for Echo Valley with Julianne Moore, my highlights were kind of toned down so it looked more like my natural hair colour.”
