The Inbetweeners’ Jay star almost died in near-fatal accident during boat scene

James Buckley almost died while shooting a classic episode of The Inbetweeners.

The 36-year-old actor, who played serial liar Jay Cartwright in the E4 sitcom, almost set off a flare gun in his face at point blank range. He was filming the hilarious Field Trip episode, where Neil punches a fish.

Fans of the secondary school sitcom know that most of the time, everything goes wrong for Jay, Neil, Simon and Will. But the actors themselves could have been hit with a terrible real-life tragedy when James found himself seconds away from getting blown up on a boat.

The actor wouldn’t be around to host his hit podcast The Buckleys with wife Clair if he hadn’t got out of the way half a second before the flare went off. He was filming the scene where the boys are stranded on a small boat and resort to sending off a flare to be rescued.

His co-star Blake Harrison (Neil) told The Sun: “He genuinely could have died. He looked down the barrel of it before it goes off and we were told don’t ever do that because if it goes off, it has the force of a grenade.

“So when James does that and half a second later it comes out, that’s how close we were to recasting.”

However, James wasn’t the only member of the cast to nearly died while making the comedy series, which ran from 2008 until 2010. It turns out Jay’s on-screen dad Terry, played by David Schaal, almost crashed his car after shooting an episode.

Terry was filming the Caravan Club episode and had to strip off for a rather grim scene which involved him weeing and farting. But the constant changes in temperature sent his body into panic-mode.

Speaking on the reunion special, Fwends Reunited, he said: “I had to get half-naked, it was freezing cold and I had to p*** and fart through the whole scene while my c*** was shrivelled to the size of an acorn. It was so cold and I had a car crash on the way home because I went hot, cold, hot, cold and I fell asleep at the wheel.”
