Kate Winslet Acknowledges Her Lesbian Scenes Got More Attention Than Her Other Love Scenes

    Neon

When asked if conversation about her sex scenes with Saoirse Ronan felt distracting, the ‘Ammonite’ star stresses on the need to support the LGBTQ community and make them more visible.

    Mar 24, 2021

    AceShowbiz –
Kate Winslet has been asked more about the lesbian scenes in her new film “Ammonite” than any heterosexual sex romps.

The Oscar winner portrays real-life English paleontologist Mary Anning in the film, which chronicles her secret relationship with Charlotte Murchison, played by Saoirse Ronan. And the project is definitely getting attention – mainly because of the love scenes.

“I definitely feel a sort of a duty to serve Mary Anning… and the story,” Kate told Digital Spy. “The story is so much about her, and her remarkable achievements that were unsung, unknown, re-appropriated by men, taken from her wrongfully.”

“I didn’t feel, ‘Oh, God, let me get away from the talking about the sex scenes and come back to that!’ but what I definitely found really striking is that people seem to talk about the love scenes in the film in ways that are much more focused, because it’s two women,” she continued.

Kate further shared the reason why she did not mind the sex scenes talks. “I’m telling you, with my hand on my heart, I have never been asked the same volume of questions about love scenes of a heterosexual nature, of which I have shot many in my life. And so that to me… that’s a conversation,” she explained.

The 45-year-old went on to express what she hope the movie could bring to the LGBTQ community. “You know, there’s no shame around this, it’s just two women who love each other. And for me, I really hope that that contributes to the evolution and progression of how audiences view LGBTQ people and their relationships just by normalizing it completely.”

Kate Winslet Raves Over Becoming Fossil Expert Thanks to 'Ammonite' Role

    BBC Films

When talking about the Francis Lee-directed movie, the Oscar winner claims her experience portraying the Mary Anning character was the most inspired she has ever been.

    Dec 23, 2020
AceShowbiz – Kate Winslet became a fossil expert while shooting her new movie “Ammonite”.
The Oscar winner stars as acclaimed 19th century paleontologist Mary Anning in the new movie and director Francis Lee insisted his leading lady knew what she was talking about on camera, so he set up lessons with an expert.
And Kate suddenly found herself fascinated by fossils.
“I often get to learn a new skill or a new craft when playing a character, but I never imagined that I would be taught how to fossil hunt,” she explains. “Now I could take you to Lyme Regis (in England) and I would know what I was talking about. That was really important to me, because we didn’t want to use hand doubles – we wanted it to be as authentic as possible.”

“Also, this is something Mary was doing as a child, so it just had to be in my bones. Paddy Howe was our fossil expert down in Lyme Regis, and he was just terrific at sharing his knowledge – he made it really user-friendly. There was nothing daunting about the words that he would use or the techniques he would describe.”
“We’d spend days whacking rocks together on a beach, because sometimes ammonites can be lurking inside them. The people at the museum in Lyme were also incredibly helpful – that’s where Mary’s writings are; accounts of how she was thinking and feeling, and they were very generous in letting us access those.”
The combination of shooting the film with Lee and her co-star, Saoirse Ronan, in Lyme Regis and studying up on Anning left Kate buzzing when the movie wrapped.
“Walking away from playing her, I was the most inspired I have ever been by any character I’ve played,” she smiles.

Kate Winslet Feels Empowered Like Never Before During Same Sex Scenes With Saoirse Ronan

    Neon/Agatha A. Nitecka

The ‘Titanic’ actress is angry and annoyed with herself for not having onscreen same sex romance sooner as she has a wonderful experience with Saoirse Ronan in their new movie.

    Nov 6, 2020
AceShowbiz – Kate Winslet regrets not having a same sex romance in a movie years ago, after falling in love with co-star Saoirse Ronan while shooting intimate scenes for new film “Ammonite”.
The two actresses play unlikely partners in the film, based in the 1840s, and Kate admits it was wonderful mapping out the love story with the “Little Women” star.
“It was interesting for me, shooting the more intimate scenes with Saoirse,” she tells WENN. “We totally adored each other… and being allowed to adore each other was just brilliant. It was really empowering, playing those two roles together – more than I’ve ever felt empowered before.”
“It made me almost annoyed with myself, in the sense that I’ve filmed intimate scenes before, but mostly with male actors – and it suddenly occurred to me that there is an automatic power dynamic that comes into play when doing that type of scene with a man. As a woman, you assume the man will take the reins, or steer the energy of the scene, and you as the female character will be ‘taken’ in some way.”
“I realised that I have allowed myself to be that taken one. It’s been absolutely fine, I’ve been perfectly comfortable with it, but to be in a situation with Saoirse, where it was utterly equal, it made me feel kind of angry at how that hasn’t occurred to me before.”

“Why shouldn’t I have felt equal to my male counterparts…? We have to make a noise about wanting to be equal, about deserving to be equal.”
Winslet, now 45, adds, “Now more than ever, I do feel telling these stories, where you see women breaking away from societal norms, it’s incredibly, incredibly important. I feel very lucky to be part of a movement just now; and filmmaking is a crucial part of that movement, keeping female voices loud and proud, sharing these stories and telling them in a truthful, sincere, emotional way.”
“A lot came up for me – lots of really interesting new things about being a woman. I’ve always felt as though I stand on my own two feet, and have a strong voice, and I’m quite proud of that – but I’ve only just begun.”
And Ronan, 26, felt just as blessed working with Kate, revealing she was the ultimate professional, while being “kind and lovely to everyone.”
“She’s also willing to do everything for the job,” the Irish actress explains. “She’s willing to look as ridiculous as possible in order to get a certain shot, or be cold and wet in the rain for as long as it takes to get a good take. It doesn’t matter to her. She’s so committed to what she’s doing and she’s got such a great sense of humour about the whole thing. She’s just got a really great attitude about work.”
“I’ve just absolutely loved working with her. I’d never done a sex scene that was so intense and full-on before. But to be able to do that with her, I did feel very, very safe, like we could go anywhere with it and still be kept safe.”

  • Kate Winslet Explains Why She Scheduled Sex Scene Filming on Saoirse Ronan's Birthday

    Neon

The ‘Titanic’ star has previously claimed that she was ‘by far the least self-conscious’ she has ever been when shooting the intimate scene with her ‘Ammonite’ co-star.

    Oct 22, 2020
AceShowbiz – Saoirse Ronan celebrated her birthday on the set of “Ammonite” by filming a sex scene with co-star Kate Winslet.
The “Titanic” star thought it would be fun to lock lips with her castmate as part of her celebrations and scheduled the intimate scene with filmmakers accordingly.
“I just wanted her to have, frankly, a great memory in her film life, regardless of how the scene played out or the movie turned out…,” Kate told Entertainment Weekly. “I knew that it would be (great) just because of the experience that we would share together.”

      See also…

Kate previously admitted she was “by far the least self-conscious” she’s ever been filming a sex scene when she shot one with Saoirse in the period film, stating, “Saoirse and I choreographed the scene ourselves… I just think Saoirse and I, we just felt really safe. (Director) Francis (Lee) was naturally very nervous and I just said to him, ‘Listen, let us work it out’. And we did: ‘We’ll start here. We’ll do this with the kissing, boobs, you go down there, then you do this, then you climb up here’. We marked out the beats of the scene so that we were anchored in something that just supported the narrative.”
Kate previously revealed that she tended to be protective to her other younger co-stars. Back in September, she told Vanity Fair that she once stayed on “Mare of Easttown” set late to ensure that Angourie Rice, who was 19 at the time, was safe while filming an intimate scene.
“I actually ended up being in the trunk of the car, screwed up in a little ball, just so they weren’t alone in the car with two men who, by the way, are completely lovely, respectful, seasoned camera operators,” she recalled. “But still, she was young and it was a potential trigger moment for her. I didn’t want for her to feel that way.”

  • Kate Winslet Embarks on Gay Romance With Saoirse Ronan in Trailer for Controversial Film 'Ammonite'

    [embedded content]

The Francis Lee-directed drama tells the story of paleontologist and fossil hunter Mary Anning (Winslet), who falls for Charlotte Murchison (Ronan) as the latter takes up an apprenticeship under her.
    Aug 26, 2020
AceShowbiz – The first official trailer for Francis Lee’s controversial film “Ammonite” has been shared for viewing pleasure. The movie stars Kate Winslet as acclaimed but overlooked paleontologist and fossil hunter Mary Anning, who works alone on the rugged coastline in the south of the country.
Set in 1840s England, the film follows Mary who now searches for common fossils to sell to tourists to support herself and her ailing mother. One day, Charlotte (Saoirse Ronan) and her husband pay her a visit. “My wife, she hasn’t been at all well of late,” says the husband, played by James McArdle. “She suffers from melancholia. I want her to walk the shoreline with you, learn from you.” Mary initially turns it down, saying, “I’m not looking for an apprentice,” but the husband offers a handsome payment that is too hard to resist.
As Charlotte takes apprenticeship under Mary, the two bond despite their initial clash due to their different social classes and personalities. The trailer sees Mary and Charlotte kissing as the latter says, “I don’t want to go back to the life I had before you.”
“Ammonite” has been tipped of Oscars, but it was met with criticism when it was announced last year that the film would focus on a romance that Mary shared with another woman. “I do not believe there is any evidence to back up portraying her as a gay woman,” family member Barbara Anning said to the Telegraph, calling the decision “sensational.”
Another relative, Lorraine Anning, begged to differ, saying that “as long as it’s well presented and tastefully done” then it doesn’t matter.
Explaining his take on Mary’s life story, Lee said earlier this year, “It’s not a biopic” but is inspired by Mary’s life and also his research into same-sex female relationships of the period. “The idea of two women actually in a relationship together was just not a thought anybody ever had within society,” he stated.
“Ammonite” was set to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival and play at the Telluride Film Festival prior their cancellations due to the coronavirus pandemic. It will now receive its first screening in September as part of this year’s Toronto film festival. The movie will be released on November 13.
