Billy Porter Admits 'Pose' Team Still Tries to Figure Out Filming Drag Ball Scenes Amid COVID-19

    FX

When appearing on ‘Live with Kelly and Ryan’, the Pray Tell depicter opens up about the complications brought by the pandemic to the season 3 production of Ryan Murphy’s hit TV series.

    Dec 29, 2020
AceShowbiz – “Pose” season three’s wild ball scenes have been booted to 2021 in the hope the flamboyant events can be freely filmed under a COVID “vaccine situation”, according to star Billy Porter.
Ryan Murphy’s hit TV series is set in 1987 against the backdrop of New York City’s drag ball scene, and though it is back in production, current coronavirus protocols do not permit some of the show’s large-scale scenes to be shot.
“We are shooting season three right now with all of the COVID protocols in place,” Billy shares on “Live with Kelly and Ryan”. “It’s not the easiest version of filming a television show that I’ve ever been a part of… I’m just grateful to be back working.”

And though he’s desperate to get his finery on to film the show’s big balls, Billy supports the “Pose” producers’ efforts to find the best solution.
“We’re still trying to figure that part out,” he shares. “We haven’t shot any of the balls yet… I believe we are waiting for the ball sequences, to hopefully be shooting them inside some kind of vaccine situation so we can have all those people in the room. So we’re pushing those scenes to next year.”
Billy will ring in the new year in style – he’s co-hosting America’s annual TV special, “Dick Clark’s Rockin’ New Year’s Eve”, with Lucy Hale and Ryan Seacrest, live from New York’s Times Square on Thursday, December 31.
“Pose” revolves around New York City’s African-American and Latino LGBTQ and gender-nonconforming drag ball culture scene in the 1980s and, in the second season, early 1990s. Jeremy Pope will be joining the cast in the third season, which has yet to get a premiere date.

Billy Porter's Fairy Godmother Has No Gender in 'Cinderella'

    Instagram

The rags-to-riches character who is portrayed by Camila Cabello is going to have a nonbinary fairy godmother in the upcoming Disney big screen adaptation.
    Mar 6, 2020
AceShowbiz – Billy Porter’s Fairy Godmother in the upcoming movie musical adaptation of “Cinderella” will be non-binary when it comes to gender.
The “Pose” star will appear alongside Camila Cabello, Idina Menzel, James Corden, and Missy Elliott in the upcoming flick and, during a chat with CBS News, the 50-year-old actor confirmed his role is genderless.
“It hit me when I was on set last week how profound it is that I am playing the fairy godmother, they call it the Fab G,” he said. “Magic has no gender. We are presenting this character as genderless, at least that’s how I’m playing it. And it’s really powerful.”
He continued, “This is a classic, this is a classic fairytale for a new generation. I think that the new generation is really ready. The kids are ready. It’s the grownups that are slowing stuff down.”
“Cinderella” is currently filming in London, England, and as former Fifth Harmony star Camila celebrated her 23rd birthday earlier this week, her boyfriend, Shawn Mendes, jetted to England to be with her as she marked the big day in the seaside town of Blackpool.
The movie is expected to be released in 2021.

Billy Porter Reacts to Accusations He'll 'Sexualize Children' With 'Sesame Street' Appearance

    Instagram

The ‘Pose’ star is facing criticisms after he’s announced to make an appearance on the popular children’s show wearing his dress from the 2019 Academy Awards.
    Feb 6, 2020
AceShowbiz – Billy Porter has slammed critics of his appearance on “Sesame Street”, after he announced he’ll be appearing on the show in the dress he wore to last year’s Oscars.
The “Pose” actor, who is a vocal member of the LGBTQ+ community and renowned for his flamboyant style and red carpet attire, will wear the black Christian Siriano tuxedo gown on an instalment of the popular children’s show later this year, prompting critics to slam the star.
Trolls, including the state senator of Arkansas, Jason Rapert, tore into Porter, asking on Facebook, “Do you approve of your taxpayer dollars being used to promote the radical LGBTQ agenda?”
A petition circulated to have the episode pulled and even accused the program of trying to “sexualise children using drag queens.”
However, the Broadway star clapped back in a chat with the New York Post’s gossip column Page Six, insisting, “If you don’t like it, don’t watch it.”
Adding that it’s unusual to make the mental leap from his dress to “perverted demon sex,” he continued, “Like, what about me singing with a penguin (puppet, on the show) has anything to do with what I’m doing in my bedroom?”
“The really interesting thing for me is that that’s what it’s all about when it comes to LGBTQ people – the first thing everyone wants to talk about is how we having sex.”
He concluded, “Stay out of my bedroom and you will be fine – that is none of your business.”
“Sesame Street” has always been at the forefront of promoting key cultural issues on the educational series, and notably featured one of the first televised scenes of breastfeeding, when presenter, singer Buffy Sainte-Marie, demonstrated the act onscreen back in 1977.

Billy Porter Stirs Debate as He Appears on 'Sesame Street' in His Oscars Gown

    Instagram

While some people feel conflicted about the show introducing the concept of gender fluidity to kids, some parents have declared a ban on the children’s series.
    Feb 1, 2020
AceShowbiz – Billy Porter has sparked a controversy with his upcoming appearance on “Sesame Street”. An LGBTQ activist, the actor has broken barrier with his gender-fluid fashion and that’s apparently the message that the show is going to deliver to children with his guest stint.
Teasing the forthcoming season 51, the show’s official Instagram page posted a photo of the “Pose” star sporting his black velvet tuxedo gown that he wore to the 2019 Academy Awards. “@theebillyporter bringing those fierce vibes to Sesame Street for #Season51,” so read the caption.
The photo has since received mixed responses from social media users, with some feeling conflicted about the show introducing the concept of gender fluidity to kids. “I’m not against it but I’m not for it either,” one argued. “It’s the parents responsibility to teach your children that love comes in all shapes sizes colors and it doesn’t matter what you wear. If they’re teaching them something important why should it matter what they have on or who they love. It doesn’t matter. ITS LOVE!”
Another agreed with the first user and wrote, “This is not okay… Him wearing this is his choice and yes, that is okay… However, you need to leave subjects like this alone and allow the parents to educate their own children when they feel the time is right.”
One other user added, “So sad to see this on Sesame Street, this is not what we grow up on, this is not about acceptance or love. This is trying to force someone’s lifestyle onto our children, this is confusing and dangerous.”
Some parents have made it clear that they won’t let their kids watch the show because of this. “Well! No more Sesame Street for my kids. Shame since I’ve watched you since I was little. Now you alienate white children and show them men with dresses on. SHAME ON YOU,” one declared. Another remarked, “My kids won’t be watching that.”
There were also some people who completely supported the show’s decision to teach kids about embracing diversity by featuring Billy in dress. “this is another teachable moment from Sesame Street and a great one at that .. Well done Guys,” one applauded the show. Another added, “Proud to watch Sesame Street! Proud of those who understand Sesame Street is about acceptance and inclusion! Diversity matters!”
Billy and “Sesame Street” have not reacted to the debate regarding his upcoming appearance on the children’s TV series.
