Blake Shelton Unapologetic Over New Song 'Minimum Wage' Amid 'Tone Deaf' Criticisms

The country music crooner defends his new song and dismisses online critics calling his new song insensitive as he says those haters are just trying to ‘pick a fight.’

    Jan 16, 2021
AceShowbiz – Country star Blake Shelton has shrugged off criticism of his new song “Minimum Wage”, insisting haters are simply trying to “pick a fight.”
The “Boys ‘Round Here” singer came under attack after debuting the tune during a TV performance on New Year’s Eve (31Dec20), revealing he’d penned the track about his romance with fiancee Gwen Stefani.
However, some of the lyrics in the chorus didn’t sit well with viewers as Shelton sang, “Girl, your love can make a man feel rich on minimum wage.”
Twitter trolls took aim at the musician for the use of the “tone deaf” reference amid the COVID-19 pandemic, during which so many businesses have been forced to shutter while millions of people have been left out of work or struggling to make ends meet.
Shelton admits the backlash initially gave him pause, but after evaluating the situation, he concluded he had nothing to apologise for.

“I just feel like these days, there are people out there who don’t want to know the truth,” he told CMT. “They just want to hear what they want to hear, and they want to pick a fight.”
He added, “No matter what your intention is, no matter what the truth is, they want it to be something that they can be upset about so that they can get on social media and try to grab a headline…”
“Whatever this backlash is is just four or five people that probably don’t know anything about country music.”
Describing the meaning of “Minimum Wage”, the loved-up singer said, “(It’s a love song about) how if times are tight and you ain’t (sic) got much money – as long as you have love and you’re happy – at the end of the day, that’s all any of us can really hope for.”
“You got it if you got that. That’s all that matters. And if that’s offensive to you, then we’ll just have to agree to disagree.”
Shelton concluded, “I believe this song is a great message and I’m proud of it.”

Blake Shelton Slammed Over Alleged Tone-Deaf Song 'Minimum Wage'

    Instagram

One critic writes on Twitter, ‘The irony of listening to a millionaire Blake Shelton singing about ‘love on minimum wage’ at the end of 2020 might be lost on its target audience.’

    Jan 4, 2021
AceShowbiz – Blake Shelton is under fire after debuting his new song titled “Minimum Wage”. Many people weren’t impressed with the song and called it insensitive considering how numerous people in America are currently struggling financially amid the coronavirus pandemic.
The fiance of Gwen Stefani debuted the track during his appearance on NBC’s New Year’s Eve television special with “The Voice” host Carson Daly ahead of 2021. Blake revealed that Gwen helped him get her brother Todd to direct the visuals of the new song.
“Girl, your love can make a man feel rich on minimum wage,” Blake croons on the song. Many felt like the song was such a tone deaf song as many were forced to shut down their business or being fired due to the pandemic.

One critic wrote on Twitter, “The irony of listening to a millionaire Blake Shelton singing about ‘love on minimum wage’ at the end of 2020 might be lost on its target audience.” Someone similarly weighed in, “I love his music but the timing for Minimum Wage isn’t great. With so many people out of work and struggling the song feels a little tone deaf. I’d like to hear songs that are more personal. Wish he wrote more of his own stuff because he’s an incredible song writer.”
“Does anyone else find Blake Shelton’s ‘Minimum Wage’ song to be incredibly tone deaf to our country’s current state?” another person asked. One user, meanwhile, demanded an apology from the “Voice” coach, writing, “Please apologize to everyone for your song ‘minimum wage.’ From what I read you’ve p***** a lot of people off during a time when we need songs of hope and charity not more crap about how much you and Gwen are in love. What an insult to all of us. Boooooo.”
“What!? @blakeshelton is #MinimumWage even for real? Yes of course @gwenstefani can make a dude on minimum wage feel rich cuz she’s a millionaire,” another person blasted the “Happy Anywhere” singer. “Are you working at the Home Depot now or something? Wanna pay my rent?”
Blake has yet to comment on the backlash.

  • Blake Shelton Steps in to Help Fans Get Refunds for Canceled Tour

    WENN

The country music star has responded after fans reach out to him on social media to complain about having issues when they seek refunds for his scrapped tour.
    Aug 14, 2020
AceShowbiz – Country superstar Blake Shelton has stepped in to help fans seek refunds for his scrapped 2020 concerts following a series of social media complaints.
Like many other musicians, the singer was forced to cut short his Friends and Heroes Tour in March (20) due to the coronavirus pandemic, which brought the live entertainment industry to a standstill.
At the time, the affected shows were listed online as postponed, with a new date to be determined, but that meant ticketholders wouldn’t qualify for refunds, as they were only offered their money back if events had been cancelled altogether.
Fans sick of waiting for make-up dates to be announced have been appealing to Shelton via Twitter to help them resolve the issue, and on Wednesday (12Aug20), he responded to a series of messages by insisting the tour had been officially axed – so refunds should be available at the point of purchase.
He quickly learned that wasn’t the case with some vendors, and subsequently had his representatives intervene to try and resolve the “awful” problem so those wanting refunds could easily claim their money back during these uncertain times.
“Bottom line is the tour IS and HAS been cancelled since March…,” he tweeted. “Get your money back people. Let me know on here how it goes over the next few days. This is terrible.”
“Doing my best to do whatever I can to clear this up. I certainly DO NOT want to be responsible for holding up anyone’s tix (ticket) refund especially right now!”
He later returned to the site to assure followers his managers were in touch with multiple vendors and “working on this ticket refund thing”, adding, “it’s a web for sure and I don’t think it’s any one persons fault (sic). It’s been a nightmare and confusing year for everyone at every level.”
Shelton subsequently provided details for ticketholders to seek refunds, and asked anyone requiring further assistance to email his team at [email protected]

Artist of the Week: Blake Shelton

Blake Shelton tops the country music chart for the umpteenth times while giving his girlfriend Gwen Stefani her first No. 1 country song with their latest collaboration.
    May 11, 2020
AceShowbiz – Nowadays many celebrities choose to keep their works separate from their private lives, but Blake Shelton is doing the opposite. Since dating Gwen Stefani in 2015, the 43-year-old country music crooner has collaborated with his girlfriend several times while maintaining a healthy balance between their professional and personal lives.
They put their romance on display in their latest duet “Nobody But You” and it became a big success. The single rose to No. 1 on the Billboard Country Airplay chart dated May 2 and peaked at the second spot on the airplay-, streaming- and sales-powered Hot Country Songs chart. It raked in 9.4 million U.S. streams and sold 9,000 downloads in the week ending April 23.
The song saw Blake and Gwen declaring their love to each other while the music video matched the romantic and heartfelt lyrics as it offered a look into the couple’s day-to-day life in his Oklahoma ranch. It marked the third studio duet for the duo, following 2016’s “Go Ahead and Break My Heart” and 2017’s “You Make It Feel Like Christmas”.
While Blake has topped country music charts numerous times, it’s the first time for his girlfriend who started out her career as the frontwoman of pop/rock band No Doubt. “Gwen has a country hit right now!” Blake joked in a recent interview with Jimmy Fallon. “Who would have ever thought that Gwen Stefani on country radio?”
Gwen was pleasantly surprised by the feat. “Trying to wrap my head around the fact that I even get to know you Blake Shelton -let alone be on Such a beautiful classic duet w u?!” she tweeted. “Thank you ! for taking me along on this ride with you!! I am so grateful and blown away by all the support everyone has shown us!!?!!”
The single was featured in Blake’s 2019 compilation album “Fully Loaded: God’s Country”. Powered with his most successful singles from two previous albums along with four new songs and a cover, the record debuted at the second position on Billboard Hot 200 and jumped straight to the first spot on the Top Country Albums ranking.

Gwen Stefani 'So Grateful' to Top Country Chart for First Time With Blake Shelton Duet

Scoring her first No.1 on Country Airplay chart with ‘Nobody But You’, the No Doubt frontwoman thanks her crooner boyfriend for taking her along on the ride with him.
    Apr 29, 2020
AceShowbiz – Rocker Gwen Stefani is in disbelief after scoring her first number one on America’s Country Airplay chart with her “Nobody But You” duet with boyfriend Blake Shelton.
The country music star invited Stefani to add her vocals to the track last year (19), and although they both fell in love with the tune, they had no idea how big of a hit it would be with fans, too, after climbing to the top of the Billboard countdown this week (begins April 27) – three months after its initial release.
” ‘Nobody But You’ wasn’t written as a duet, but it is a duet,” Shelton told Billboard.com as he reflected on the chart news. “I have to thank (songwriters) Shane McAnally, Ross Copperman, Josh Osborne and Tommy Lee James for trusting us with this incredible song that captures exactly how I feel about Gwen, and I can connect with every lyric.”
“I still pinch myself every time I hear one of my songs on the radio, but I have to pinch and twist really hard to believe I’m singing it with Gwen Stefani. As always, thank you to the fans that listen and I cannot wait until we can all be together celebrating music again.”
Shelton also took to Twitter to share a special message for Stefani, writing, “Congratulations @gwenstefani on your first country song going #1 at country radio!!! Not bad for your first try!!!!! Thank you all as well!!! #nobodybutyou.”
And the No Doubt frontwoman is blown away by the couple’s achievement.
“Trying to wrap my head around the fact that I even get to know Blake Shelton -let alone be on Such a beautiful classic duet w (with) him,” she remarked as she reposted Shelton’s tweet.

Stefani continued, “thank you [email protected] for taking me along on this ride with you!! I am so grateful and blown away by all the support everyone has shown us!!!!! #WHATTHEHECK?!! we got a #1 single?!!! #bestfriend #nobodybutyou #nevernmywildestdreams (sic)!!!!!”

    Instagram

The ‘Hollaback Girl’ songstress delights audience at the Forum in Los Angeles when she makes an appearance during the ‘God’s Country’ singer’s concert to perform their collaboration ‘Nobody But You’.
    Mar 9, 2020
AceShowbiz – Gwen Stefani is returning the favor to her boyfriend Blake Shelton. Weeks after the “God’s Country” singer made a surprise appearance at one of her Las Vegas residency’s shows, the former No Doubt frontwoman delighted attendees of his Los Angeles concert with their sweet onstage duet of “Nobody But You”.
On Saturday night, March 7, Shelton took the stage at the Forum as a part of his “Friends and Heroes Tour”, and crooned the song off his “Fully Loaded: God’s Country” album. Soon after he delivered his first verse, Stefani’s voice was heard as she popped out from behind the stage, prompting concertgoers to erupt in cheers over her appearance.
For the special performance, the “Hollaback Girl” hitmaker rocked a blue fringed denim jacket with the word “Blake” written on its back. She completed her costume with a pair of short shorts and thigh-high sparkly boots. At the end of the performance, she shared a tight hug with Shelton who then peppered her with kisses.
After the show, Stefani made use of Instagram to post a clip of their duet. She wrote alongside the video, “Got to hop on stage w my best friend @blakeshelton tonight #friendsandheroestour #nobodybutyou 2020 Gx.” She also let out a photo of her pointing at Shelton’s direction, and thanked him for “having me on your @theforum stage and giving me the opportunity to wear denim and diamond Fringe with a unicorn ponytail.”

The 50-year-old songstress additionally shared a series of behind-the-scene photos. Both pictures capture her and Shelton as they were joined by her two sons with ex-husband Gavin Rossdale, 13-year-old Kingston and 11-year-old Zuma, backstage.

Shelton himself turned to his Instagram page to share a video of their duet. In an accompanying caption of the post, he teased his fans, “Friends, heroes, AND… @GwenStefani! Y’all never know what might happen on the #FriendsAndHeroesTour!”

Stefani and Shelton performed their romantic duet of “Nobody But You” for the first time at the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards back in January. Three weeks later, the “Hillbilly Bone” crooner delighted the “Wind It Up” singer’s fans when he made a surprise appearance at her “Just a Girl” residency at Planet Hollywood, Las Vegas.
