Shonda Rhimes Shocked by Uproar Over Rege-Jean Page's Exit From 'Bridgerton'

    WENN/Netflix

The producer of the Netflix period drama series is taken aback by fans’ outcry over the absence of the Duke of Hastings from the upcoming second season.

    Apr 14, 2021

    AceShowbiz –
“Bridgerton” creator Shonda Rhimes was stunned by the fan reaction to Rege-Jean Page’s “exit” from the hit show, insisting he was only ever supposed to appear in the first season.

Devotees fell in love with Page’s Duke of Hastings and were stunned last month (Mar21) when it was confirmed he wouldn’t be back for a second run of the show – and Rhimes had no idea superfans would be so upset.

“I was really shocked, because usually that happens when I’ve killed off somebody that’s been around for a while,” she tells Vanity Fair. “We didn’t even kill him! He’s still alive!”

But Rhimes is glad the Brit left such an impact on the Bridgerton faithful, adding, “He is a powerful, amazing actor and that meant we did our job.”

“Every season, our job is finding the right people and putting together this incredible, world-shifting romance.”

“I mean, really, what would Rege-Jean do, you know what I mean? We gave them (Duke and Duchess of Hastings) their happily ever after! And now we have this next couple coming.”

The Duchess, played by Phoebe Dynevor, will be back for the second season while it was also announced on Tuesday that Netflix bosses have signed on for a third and fourth season of the period drama hit, which launched on Christmas Day (25Dec20).

'Bridgerton' Gets Early Renewal for Season 3 and 4

    Netflix

The Netflix Regency drama series has been picked up for two more seasons by the streaming giant even while the second installment is still in production.

    Apr 14, 2021

    AceShowbiz –
Netflix has agreed a deal with Shonda Rhimes for two more seasons of hit show “Bridgerton”.

The streaming giant has signed up for a third and fourth season of the period drama from executive producer Rhimes while its second season is currently still in production, according to editors at The Hollywood Reporter.

Renewal for seasons 3 and 4 follows a hugely successful debut which saw the show break the streamers viewing record and the departure of season 1 leading man Rege-Jean Page.

“This two-season pickup is a strong vote of confidence in our work and I feel incredibly grateful to have partners as collaborative and creative as Netflix. Betsy (Beers) and I are thrilled to have the opportunity to continue bringing the world of Bridgerton to a worldwide audience,” Rhimes said in a statement obtained by the publication.

“Bridgerton swept us off our feet. The creative team, led by Shonda, knew the material and delivered a beautiful, emotional, romantic drama for our members. They have some exciting plans for the future, and we think audiences will continue to swoon for this show. We’re planning to be in the Bridgerton business for a long time to come,” Bela Bajaria, VP of global TV at Netflix, added in a statement from the streaming giant.

The second season of the Regency drama is expected to be based on Quinn’s novel “The Viscount Who Loved Me”, and will chronicle a new romance story of Lord Anthony Bridgerton’s search for love.

However, fans were disappointed to see the departure of British star Page who had originally signed on to the series with a one-year deal to play male lead Simon Basset, the Duke of Hastings.

Report: Rege-Jean Page Exits 'Bridgerton' Due to 'Creative Differences' With Shonda Rhimes

    Instagram

Despite leaving the hit Netflix series, the British-Zimbabwean actor previously noted in an interview that he hoped nothing but further success for ‘Bridgerton’.

    Apr 13, 2021

    AceShowbiz –
It seems like Rege-Jean Page’s exit from Netflix’s hit drama “Bridgerton” can be avoided. If a new report is to be believed, the reason why the Simon Basset depicter departed from the show was because he and the producers had different views on the future of his character.

“Rege is not coming back to ‘Bridgerton’ because of creative differences with [executive producer] Shonda Rhimes and her team,” a source told Page Six. “He wasn’t happy with what was planned for his character for season 2, which would have kept him a player but not the focal point of the show.”

Additionally, the Hollywood insider claimed that the actor “has been inundated with offers for other interesting and challenging leading roles.”

The source later noted that it wasn’t a good move for Rege to have a disagreement with Shonda. “If you look at all the big names who have left [Rhimes’ hit show] ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ in the past, you see you don’t disagree with Shonda, nobody is bigger than the show,” the source added. Despite the “creative differences,” Rege allegedly left on good terms.

Of his exit, the 31-year-old hunk told Variety earlier this month, “It’s a one-season arc. It’s going to have a beginning, middle, end – give us a year. [I thought] ‘That’s interesting,’ because then it felt like a limited series. I get to come in, I get to contribute my bit and then the Bridgerton family rolls on.”

While acknowledging that fans might be saddened by his exit, he was convinced that “the audience knows the arc completes.” The actor continued, “They come in knowing that, so you can tie people in emotional knots because they have that reassurance that we’re going to come out and we’re going to have the marriage and the baby.”

The British-Zimbabwean actor also noted that he hoped nothing but further success for “Bridgerton”. “I have nothing but excitement for ‘Bridgerton’ continuing to steam train off and conquer the globe,” he claimed. “But there is also value in completing these arcs and sticking the landing.”

'Bridgerton' Author Hopes for More Racy Scenes Between Phoebe Dynevor and Rege-Jean Page in Season 2

    Netflix

The writer of ‘Bridgerton’ novels wants more raunchy scenes between the mad-love couple, Daphne and the Duke of Hastings, in the next sophomore installment.

    Feb 10, 2021
AceShowbiz – The author of “Bridgerton” has called for more sex scenes involving season one stars Daphne and the Duke of Hastings in next instalment of the Netflix hit.
Julia Quinn, who wrote the novels the programme is based on and consults on the period drama, is keen to see more of the sex-mad couple, played by Phoebe Dynevor and Rege-Jean Page in the second season, after their passionate love story captivated viewers in season one.
Despite the second book in Julia’s series focusing on Anthony – played by Jonathan Bailey – the author has insisted Daphne and the Duke must return for more.
When asked if the couple would come back in season two, she told Britain’s The Sun newspaper, “I hope so. They do show up in the book. The series doesn’t follow the book word for word – and I don’t think (it) should. The story of each book plays out in a season, but it’s not the only story.”

      See also…

“So I hope so, for no other reason than Daphne has the right to interfere with Anthony’s life. To deny her that chance would be criminal. I think it would be lovely to see.”
And whilst Julia hasn’t read the proposed scripts for season two yet, she is confident fans will get to see Anthony “taken down so many pegs.”
“I haven’t seen the scripts yet so I don’t necessarily know what they’re going to do, but I did write the story so I know a little bit about it,” she grinned.
“Anthony is going to get it bad. Jonathan Bailey played him so well; you still love him, but he needs to be taken down a peg, and he is going to be taken down so many pegs. It’s awesome.”
“Bridgerton” is currently Netflix’s most-watched series after 82 million households tuned in following its release in December (20).
