Carey Mulligan Admits She Struggled to Find Right Roles Before Oscar Nomination

    WENN

The ‘Promising Young Woman’ actress hopes her Best Actress nomination at the upcoming 93rd annual Academy Awards bring her more great roles in the future.

    Mar 20, 2021

    AceShowbiz –
Oscar nominee Carey Mulligan feels she is always waiting for her next role because she isn’t a Marvel movie star.

The “Promising Young Woman” actress admits it can be difficult for her to find work at times because she isn’t a producer and exciting scripts don’t always “filter down” to her, but she’s thankful she receives at least one offer for an “unmissable” project every year.

“I just act, so I wait for the scripts…,” Carey tells The Guardian. “I don’t see a huge change yet, but I’m not the first person that would get a script necessarily, in terms of not being in a Marvel movie. So things aren’t necessarily always filtering down to me.”

“But there’s a feeling that there are more (good roles for women) and there are people being very proactive, like (Promising Young Woman writer/director) Emerald (Fennell), like Phoebe Waller-Bridge, like Margot Robbie – women who are being very deliberate about creating new and exciting things.”

Mulligan also reveals she was worried about taking on her latest role as a vengeful former medical student because the character wasn’t a mum.

The actress, who shares kids Evelyn, five, and Wilfred, three, with husband Marcus Mumford, explains, “When I read the Promising Young Woman script, I felt the way that you do when you watch (Oscar-winning movie) Parasite. Constantly wrongfooted, like, ‘Oh my word, what is this?’ In a good way. I also felt the thing that I always want to feel: that I would be gutted if anyone else played this part. I had to do it, but also I didn’t know how to do it.”

“I’d been exclusively playing mums for a bit. I had a teenage son in Wildlife and then I had children in Mudbound… and then, suddenly, I was a bit like, ‘Can you still buy me as pre-kids?’ It wasn’t anything I’d massively articulated, but I was like, ‘OK, I’m gonna be in that zone again.’ There were lots of things about it that I felt like, ‘I have no idea how to do this.’ ”

Carey Mulligan Finds Variety's Apology for Sexist 'Promising Young Woman' Review 'Moving'

    WENN/Brian To

When talking to Zendaya on Variety’s Actors on Actors, the actress playing Cassie Thomas in Emerald Fennell’s comedy thriller explains why she felt it was important for her to call out on the film review.

    Jan 27, 2021
AceShowbiz – Carey Mulligan has accepted Variety’s apology for “Promising Young Woman” review. Having called out the publication for suggesting her not attractive enough to play the lead role in Emerald Fennell’s comedy thriller, the Cassie Thomas depicter admitted to having found the mea culpa “moving.”
The 35-year-old addressed the matter when speaking to Zendaya Coleman on Variety’s “Actors on Actors” series. “I was really, really surprised and thrilled, and happy to have received an apology. I kind of found it moving, in a way, to have drawn a line under that in a good way, and know that that had an impact in a way. So it was positive,” she said.
During the chat, Carey also explained why she slammed the outlet. “I feel it’s important that criticism is constructive. I think it’s important that we are looking at the right things when it comes to work, and we’re looking at the art, and we’re looking at the performance and the way that a film is made,” she elaborated.
“And I don’t think that goes to the appearance of an actor or your personal preference for what an actor does or doesn’t look like, which it felt that that article did,” she went on. “I think in criticizing or sort of bemoaning a lack of attractiveness on my part in a character, it wasn’t a personal slight, it wasn’t something that I felt.”
“It didn’t wound my ego, but it made me concerned that in such a big publication, an actress’ appearance could be criticized and it could be that, you know, that could be accepted as completely reasonable criticism,” she continued explaining. “I think it’s important to call out those things, because they seem small and they seem insignificant.”

In the review published by Variety, Carey was described as an “odd choice” to play the femme fatale character. It continued to read, “Margot Robbie is a producer here, and one can (perhaps too easily) imagine the role might once have been intended for her. Whereas with this star, Cassie wears her pickup-bait gear like bad drag; even her long blonde hair seems a put-on.”
Carey first weighed in on the sexist review in a profile for the New York Times in December 2020. “I read the Variety review, because I’m a weak person… And I took issue with it,” she claimed. “It felt like it was basically saying that I wasn’t hot enough to pull off this kind of ruse.”
“It wasn’t some sort of ego-wounding thing – like, I fully can see that Margot Robbie is a goddess,” she added. “It drove me so crazy. I was like, ‘Really? For this film, you’re going to write something that is so transparent? Now? In 2020?’ I just couldn’t believe it.”
Variety later issued an apology to Carey. Adding an editor’s note at the top of the review, the outlet penned, “Variety sincerely apologizes to Carey Mulligan and regrets the insensitive language and insinuation in our review of ‘Promising Young Woman’ that minimized her daring performance.”

Carey Mulligan Enjoys Being Violent With No Consequences on Set of 'Promising Young Woman'

    Focus Features

The ‘Great Gatsby’ actress talks about the making of her new critically-acclaimed comedy thriller, admitting that she loves filming the violent scenes on the set.

    Jan 20, 2021
AceShowbiz – Carey Mulligan enjoyed performing violent scenes in “Promising Young Woman”.
The actress stars as Cassie Thomas in Emerald Fennell’s black comedy and revealed she relished the experience of being violent on the big screen – which has been a rarity in her career.
“It was quite fun. It’s funny, I said to someone the other day – when we were shooting Drive, I always wanted to get out of the elevator and be in a scene,” she told The A.V. Club.
“And I think there was a scene originally at some point in Drive where there was a shootout – I think in the basement – and I was there. And then it got cut, and we didn’t shoot it. So yeah, it was nice to get to – well, it’s always fun to smash up a car with a tire iron if there’s no consequences.”

In fact, Carey enjoyed being destructive so much that she was left disappointed when a scene where she smashes a car only required three takes.
“I remember being disappointed because we only got to do it three times, because we had three sets of tail lights. I was like, ‘Come on, let’s do another one!’ And Emerald was like, ‘No, no, calm down, buddy,’ ” Carey laughed.
Carey Mulligan will be honoured with the International Star Award at the upcoming Palm Springs International Film Awards for her role in “Promising Young Woman”.
Previous recipients of the International Star Award include Nicole Kidman, Helen Mirren, Saoirse Ronan, and Charlize Theron.
Like last year’s honoree Theron, who went on to gain an Oscar nomination for her role in movie “Bombshell”, Mulligan is among Oscar favorites this year. She has already been named Best Actress at Los Angeles Film Critics Association, San Diego Film Critics Society, Houston Film Critics Society, St. Louis Film Critics Association, and Music City Film Critics Association.

Carey Mulligan Among Honorees at 2021 Palm Springs International Film Awards

    WENN

The ‘Promising Young Woman’ actress is set to be celebrated at the upcoming Palm Springs International Film Awards, nine years after she was named breakthrough star at the event.

    Jan 17, 2021
AceShowbiz – Carey Mulligan will be honoured with the International Star Award for her performance in “Promising Young Woman” at The Palm Springs International Film Awards.
Mulligan stars in the drama, directed by Emerald Fennell, as Cassandra Thomas, a young woman who risks her life to avenge the death of her best friend.
According to editors at Variety, the festival and film awards gala will not be held as in-person events this year (21). However, the actress is among a selection of honourees being recognised for their stellar performances, organisers announced.
“This is a thrilling black comedy that tells an entertaining story of female power,” festival chairman Harold Matzner, told the news outlet. Mulligan previously received the festival’s breakthrough performance award in 2011.
Previous recipients of the International Star Award include Nicole Kidman, Helen Mirren, and Saoirse Ronan. Mulligan is now a favourite for the Oscar glory as last year’s honouree, Charlize Theron, gained an Oscar nomination for her role in movie “Bombshell”.

The Palm Springs International Film Festival and Film Awards are set to return in 2022 while offshoot Palm Springs ShortFest is still scheduled for 22-28 June.
In the “Promising Young Woman”, Carey Mulligan showed off her vocal chops as she covered Paris Hilton’s “Stars Are Blind” in the middle of a pharmacy with her onscreen love interest, played by Bo Burnham. While she had no problem with the singing portion of the scene, she was reluctant to show off her dance moves on camera.
“It was probably one of the scariest days of my career, but it was all led by Bo Burnham,” she shared on U.S. talk show “Watch What Happens Live”. “I initially resisted dancing quite a lot, but he really led the charge.”
Carey is unsure if Paris has checked out her song cover, but she would have loved to have connected with the hotel heiress and DJ had they been able to stage a traditional premiere for the film.
“We don’t know if she’s seen it; I actually don’t know if Paris has seen the film,” Carey confessed, “and one of the greatest disappointments of this year is not being able to get her to come to a premiere, but I hope she likes it.”

Carey Mulligan Joins Stars and Filmmakers in Alternative BAFTAs Campaign

    WENN/Brian To

Days leading to the BAFTA Film Awards, the ‘Suffragette’ star and many other British actresses team up with Time’s Up U.K. to call on fans to celebrate those who they feel wrongly missed out.
    Jan 28, 2020
AceShowbiz – Carey Mulligan and Amma Asante are among the stars and filmmakers who have launched a social media campaign to recognise women and people of colour overlooked at this year’s BAFTA Film Awards.
Bosses at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts came under fire after the nominations were announced earlier this month, as no actors of colour were nominated for main prizes, and the Best Director shortlist was all male.
Ahead of Sunday’s (February 02) ceremony, Carey, Amma and others have teamed up with equality organisation Time’s Up UK to call on fans to celebrate those who they feel wrongly missed out – and would have bagged a nomination on a more diverse shortlist.
Nominating her choice for the Best Director gong, Carey said in a press release, “I would give a BAFTA nomination to Lorene Scafaria for Hustlers,” while Belle director Amma complained that the Lena Waithe penned thriller “Queen & Slim”, missed out.
“My pick for Best Actress in a Leading Role for this year’s BAFTA Film Awards is Jodie Turner-Smith in ‘Queen & Slim’,” she added.
Similarly Gemma Arterton believed Olivia Wilde’s directorial debut “Booksmart” was overlooked, saying, “I loved Booksmart and can’t believe it didn’t get any nods, especially for the acting and first-time director. Same goes for ‘The Nightingale’ and ‘Portrait of a Lady on Fire’.”
Joely Richardson meanwhile, expressed her disappointment that her mother Vanessa Redgrave didn’t get a Best Supporting Actress nod for “Mrs Lowry & Son”.
Akua Gyamfi, founder of The British Blacklist entertainment platform also listed a host of actors of colour who she felt deserved recognition, including Lupita Nyong’o, Cynthia Erivo, Daniel Kaluuya, and Damson Idris.
Explaining the rationale behind the intervention, Time’s Up UK Chair Heather Rabbatts said: “Time’s Up wants to ensure we do not let these awards pass by without us raising the profile of those whose endeavours and performances have not made it to the nominations. So, we are running a social media campaign which will highlight those who are absent and who we also want to see recognised.”
