Hillary Scott of Lady A Came Close to Do Solo Debut With Carrie Underwood's 'Jesus, Take the Wheel'

    Instagram

Looking back at the hit song that launched the ‘American Idol’ alum into stardom, the ‘Need You Now’ singer reveals it was pitched to her before she teamed up with Charles Kelley and Dave Haywood.

    Jan 22, 2021
AceShowbiz – Carrie Underwood’s breakthrough hit “Jesus, Take the Wheel” was almost recorded by Lady A’s Hillary Scott.
The “Need You Now” singer tells Taste of Country the track was pitched to her when she had a solo development deal with a Nashville, Tennessee record label before she became a member of what was then Lady Antebellum.
“It was one of my favourites, and then that was all right in the time she (Underwood) was on American Idol,” Scott recalls. “She was a country artist on American Idol, which was amazing, and that song really spoke to her.”
Carrie went on to win the talent show and released “Jesus, Take the Wheel” as the first single from her debut album, “Some Hearts”, in 2005. It went to number one the following January (06) and helped Carrie pick up the Academy of Country Music Award for Single of the Year and Grammys for Best Country Song and Best Female Country Vocal Performance.

“She goes on to take it and it’s a huge hit and the message of the song is so beautiful,” Scott notes. “It’s neat to have watched the journey of that song.”
Scott went on to form Lady A with Charles Kelley and Dave Haywood in 2006.

That aside, Lady A was surprised to find out that they were invited to Grand Ole Opry. “An invitation into the @opry makes country artists like us feel like we will always have a home—a place to celebrate country music, play our songs, visit with our friends and fans…a place to belong. Thank you @opry and thank you @dariusrucker for sharing the good news with us.

Carrie Underwood in Christmas Spirit Throughout 2020 for 'My Gift'

    Instagram

The country singer reveals in an interview that she headed into a winter wonderland-decorated studio over the summer to lay down her vocals for the hit album.

    Dec 25, 2020
AceShowbiz – Country superstar Carrie Underwood has spent much of 2020 in the spirit of Christmas as she began working on her first holiday album at the start of the year.
The singer admits working on recording and promoting “My Gift” helped to take her mind off the coronavirus pandemic and the global shutdown – and she was glad for the festive distraction.
“I do feel like I’ve been living Christmas all year long,” she said, revealing she headed into a winter wonderland-decorated studio over the summer to lay down her vocals.
“So I have been living in Christmas land all of 2020, which is a much better place than being in 2020 itself,” Carrie laughed.

And getting to record a new version of “Little Drummer Boy” with her five-year-old son Isaiah was a really special moment she will always treasure – because she didn’t expect the session to go so well.
“I didn’t know how it was gonna work,” Carrie confessed. “I’d asked him if he wanted to be a part of the Christmas album, just come sing a song with me, and I was like, ‘I don’t know if he’ll be able to, he might get frustrated, or you know, be bored… he’s five!'”
“So I kind of warned everybody, ‘I’m not sure what we’re gonna get, but even if we don’t get anything, and he doesn’t feel like doing it, at least I got to bring my kid to work with me, he gets to see what I do, because really I don’t think he has that much of an idea of what my job is… It was all that I could have hoped for and more. We did have a wonderful day in the studio…”

“He sings his heart, he doesn’t know any other way… it was just so pure and joyful and I was honoured to get to be in the room with him while he did that.”

Carrie Underwood's Son Shows Off His Song With Mom to Classmates

    Instagram

According to mom Carrie, the five-year-old Isaiah is so proud of his guest vocals on the ‘Little Drummer Boy’ revamp that he shows it off to his friends in school.

AceShowbiz – Carrie Underwood’s five-year-old son is “so proud” he’s part of her first ever Christmas album, he’s playing the sweet song to all his school pals.
Isaiah, the singer’s boy with husband Mike Fisher, contributes guest vocals on “Little Drummer Boy”, and he couldn’t be more excited to be part of mum’s festive collection, titled “The Gift”.
“I had no idea what was going to happen (in the studio),” the “American Idol” winner told Kelly Clarkson on her daytime talk show of her kid’s big performance.
“He’s never been in that kind of situation before. I don’t think he’s even been like, in the studio with me ever before.”

In fact, the “Love Wins” hitmaker isn’t even sure Isaiah knows what his mother does for a living.
“I don’t know if he knows what I do at all,” she laughed, “but I could hear his voice on it (track) in my head when I was singing it in the studio and I just thought, ‘Ask him and see if he might want to (sing on it).’ ”
And she needn’t have worried if Isaiah would rise to the occasion because the star rated her child’s performance as “great.”
“He did such a great job,” she added, “and… he’s so proud of himself, he went to school and he said, ‘Hey, my song’s out. Wanna hear my song?’ And they were listening to it in his class.”
The album debuted at No. 8 on Billboard Hot 200 and hit the pinnacle on the Billboard Top Country Albums, marking Carrie’s eighth consecutive No. 1 album on the Country chart. It also reigned the Top Christian Albums and Top Holiday Albums.
