Marvel Rules Out Replacing Chadwick Boseman With CGI in 'Black Panther 2'

    Walt Disney Pictures

The upcoming ‘Black Panther’ sequel will not feature a digital version of the late actor as Marvel is taking a little time to see how they are going to honor the star.

    Nov 16, 2020
AceShowbiz – Chadwick Boseman won’t feature in the forthcoming “Black Panther” sequel, Marvel officials have confirmed.
The late actor starred as the titular King T’Challa in the hit 2018 flick and had been due to reprise the role before his death following a private struggle with colon cancer earlier this year (20), aged 43.
Speaking to the Argentinian newspaper Clarin, as reported by The Wrap, Marvel’s Victoria Alonso affirmed, “No. There’s only one Chadwick and he’s not with us,” when asked about the prospect of a digital recreation of the star.
“Our king, unfortunately, has died in real life, not just in fiction, and we are taking a little time to see how we return to the story and what we do to honour this chapter of what has happened to us that was so unexpected, so painful, so terrible, really,” she stated.

“Because Chadwick was not only a wonder of a human being every day for the five years that we spent together,” added Alonso. “But it also seems to me that as a character what he did elevated us as a company and has left his moment in history.”
Boseman made his debut as the Black Panther in 2016’s “Captain America: Civil War”, and went on to reprise the role in “Black Panther”, “Avengers: Infinity War”, and 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame”.
“We have to think carefully about what we are going to do and how and think about how we are going to honour the franchise,” Alonso mused.
“Black Panther 2”, starring Danai Gurira, Martin Freeman, and Letitia Wright, has a May, 2022 release date.

  • Chadwick Boseman Lets Out Emotion in First Trailer of His Final Film 'Ma Rainey's Black Bottom'

    [embedded content]

The late ‘Black Panther’ actor portrayed Ma Rainey’s band member Levee, an ambitious, yet under-appreciated trumpeter who aspires to make his own mark in the Chicago music scene.

    Oct 20, 2020
AceShowbiz – Here’s a new official look at Chadwick Boseman’s final film “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”. Netflix has released the first trailer of the film starring the late actor and Viola Davis, after previously previewing it with some first-look photos.
In the upcoming drama based on the play of the same name by August Wilson, Boseman portrayed Ma Rainey’s band member Levee, an ambitious trumpeter who aspires to make his own mark in the Chicago music scene by putting a contemporary spin on old-fashioned songs. Yet, his works are under-appreciated by his own colleagues and white music executives, leading to some emotional moments in the trailer.
Davis takes on the title role, who is described as the legendary “Mother of the Blues.” Set in 1920s, the movie centers on a fateful recording session of “Mother of the Blues” as tensions rise between Ma Rainey, her ambitious horn player and the white management determined to control the legendary “Mother of the Blues”.

“Late to the session, the fearless, fiery Ma engages in a battle of wills with her white manager and producer over control of her music,” according to the official synopsis. “As the band waits in the studio’s claustrophobic rehearsal room, ambitious trumpeter Levee – who has an eye for Ma’s girlfriend and is determined to stake his own claim on the music industry – spurs his fellow musicians into an eruption of stories revealing truths that will forever change the course of their lives.”
Boseman was battling colon cancer while filming “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”, though none of the production crew and his co-stars knew about it. He completed the production before his passing on August 28. He was 43.
George C. Wolfe directs the film, with Ruben Santiago-Hudson writing the script. Denzel Washington co-produces it with Todd Black and Dany Wolf. Glynn Turman, Colman Domingo and Michael Potts are also among the cast members.
“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” is set to be released December 18 on Netflix.

  • Get First Look at Chadwick Boseman in His Final Movie 'Ma Rainey's Black Bottom'

    Netflix

Denzel Washington, who co-produces the Netflix movie, praises the late actor’s ‘a brilliant job,’ while his co-star Viola Davis remembers he ‘could completely discard whatever ego he had’ to portray Levee.
    Oct 1, 2020
AceShowbiz – Chadwick Boseman had completed filming for “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”, which now would be his final film, before his shocking death in late August. Now, the first look at the late actor in the upcoming Netflix movie has been unveiled.
Boseman portrays Levee, an ambitious trumpeter, in the film. He is seen suiting up in one image and lying down on a bench while being surrounded by other musicians in another shot. There’s also a behind-the-scenes look featuring the “Black Panther” star with lead actress Viola Davis and director George C. Wolfe.

Davis takes on the title role, who is described as the legendary “Mother of the Blues.” A still picture shows her in a scene where she performs with a band of musicians, while another image sees her channeling her inner diva on stage while being joined by some backing dancers.

Speaking to The New York Times, Denzel Washington, who co-produced the movie, gushes over Boseman’s performance. “He did a brilliant job, and he’s gone. I still can’t believe it,” he said of the late actor.

Davis, meanwhile, applauds Boseman’s work ethic. “A lot of actors mistake their presence for the event,” she says of her co-star. “An actor of Chadwick’s status usually comes on and it’s their ego who comes on before them: This is what they want, this is what they’re not going to do. That was absolutely, 150 percent off the table with Chadwick. He could completely discard whatever ego he had, whatever vanity he had, and welcome Levee in.”

She goes on recalling how Boseman received a lot of support from his team during the production. “I’m looking back at how tired he always seemed. I look at his beautiful, unbelievable team that was meditating over him and massaging him, and I now realize everything they were trying to infuse in him to keep him going and working at his optimal level. And he received it,” she shares, not realizing that he was battling cancer at the time.
“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” is based on the play of the same name by August Wilson. The film is set during an intense recording session in 1920s Chicago as Ma Rainey battles her manager and producer over control of her music and goes toe-to-toe with band members such as Boseman’s Levee, an ambitious trumpeter who is determined to make a name for himself in the music industry.
The movie will be released December 18 on Netflix.

The ‘Doctor Strange’ actress caps her speech with ‘Wakanda Forever’ while accepting the Golden Lion Award during the opening ceremony of the Venice Film Festival.
    Sep 3, 2020
AceShowbiz – Tilda Swinton has paid tribute to Chadwick Boseman at the Venice Film Festival. The actress, who was honored with Golden Lion Award for Lifetime Achievement, inserted a nod to the late actor in her rousing speech about the power of cinema.
“Viva Venezia. Cinema cinema cinema. Wakanda Forever. Nothing but love,” she capped her speech delivered during the opening ceremony of the festival on Wednesday, September 2. The “Wakanda Forever” line is a reference to Chadwick’s blockbuster movie “Black Panther”.
Tilda also said when accepting the award, “Cinema is my happy place, my true motherland. Its fellowship is my heart’s family tree. The names on the list of those awarded this honor, meanwhile, they are the names of my masters. They’re the elders of my tribe. The poets of the language I love above others. I sing their songs in the bath. I’m the punk kid film nut hitching a ride to the station to get to the foothills of the heights of their achievements.”
Chadiwck died of colon cancer at age 43 on August 28. He was battling the disease for four years before succumbing to it and chose to keep the battle private with only a few of his very tight-knit group of friends and members of his team, including producing partner Logan Coles, longtime agent Michael Greene of Greene & Associates Talent Agency and trainer Addison Henderson, aware of his cancer diagnosis.
Speaking after the actor’s passing, his close pals reveal how Chadwick sometimes struggled through pain while filming his movies. Michael shares that while filming the upcoming Netflix film “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”, Chadwick “was really in hard-core pain,” but “felt that being able to be with [co-star] Denzel [Washington] and to launch this cycle of [playwright] August Wilson at Netflix was so exciting to him.”
Addison, who is also an actor and director, recalls Chadwick sitting and giving him script notes for hours “while battling and dealing with his own things.” Later, after shooting “Da 5 Bloods” in Thailand followed by reshoots of his 2019 film “21 Bridges”, “he was tired but he came to Buffalo, where I shot my movie, and stayed for days with me, just to talk through stuff with me, just to be a good brother,” Addison reveals. “He didn’t have to do that, he could have gone home and just rested. For me, that was just something that I’ll never forget.”
Describing how the late actor spent his final days, Addison says, “He was just living his artistic life to the fullest and using his time and his moment to really affect people.”

  • Preview Event for Chadwick Boseman's Final Film Gets Scrapped

    WENN

The ‘Black Panther’ actor, who passed away after a secret, four-year cancer battle, stars opposite Viola Davis in Netflix’s ‘Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom’, which is produced by Denzel Washington.
    Aug 31, 2020
AceShowbiz – A virtual preview for Chadwick Boseman’s final film has been scrapped out of respect for the late actor.
Netflix bosses had been due to host an online event on Monday (August 31) for “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”, the movie adaptation of August Wilson’s play of the same name, in which the “Black Panther” star had featured alongside Viola Davis.
However, in light of Boseman’s passing from a secret, four-year cancer battle on Friday (August 28), officials have chosen to scrap the preview, which was due to include commentary from Davis and director George C. Wolfe.
In a statement issued to Deadline.com, a Netflix representative said, “This is an incredible loss. We are canceling Monday’s preview event of ‘Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom’. Please join us in sending your thoughts to his family and loved ones.”
Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos added, “Chadwick was a superhero on screen and in life, and it’s impossible to imagine working at the level he has while valiantly battling his illness.”
“His legacy as a person and an artist will inspire millions. Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family during this difficult time.”
Meanwhile, Davis has shared her tribute to Boseman on social media, writing, “Chadwick…..no words to express my devastation of losing you. Your talent, your spirit, your heart, your authenticity…”
“It was an honor working beside you, getting to know you….Rest well prince…May flights of angels sing thee to thy heavenly rest. I love you!”

And Denzel Washington, who serves as a producer on “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”, has remembered Boseman too, years after paying for the Howard University graduate to attend an acting programme at Oxford University in England.
“He was a gentle soul and a brilliant artist, who will stay with us for eternity through his iconic performances over his short yet illustrious career,” Washington wrote. “God bless Chadwick Boseman.”
A release date for “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” has yet to be announced.

  • Russo Brothers and Robert Downey Jr. Add Tributes to Chadwick Boseman as TV Special Airs on ABC

    WENN

The ‘Avengers: Endgame’ directors and ‘Iron Man’ star become the latest Marvel stars to remember the late ‘Black Panther’ actor while ABC pays homage with a TV special.
    Aug 31, 2020
AceShowbiz – Marvel moviemakers Joe and Anthony Russo are struggling to come to terms with the shocking loss of Chadwick Boseman, admitting the news is “hard to process.”
The directing siblings cast the tragic actor as Black Panther/T’Challa in “Captain America: Civil War”, the 2016 movie which introduced the character to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and led to the stand alone “Black Panther” movie in 2018.
They reunited for “Avengers: Infinity War” and its sequel, “Endgame”, while the Russo brothers also served as producers on Boseman’s “21 Bridges” action thriller last year (19), and they are heartbroken by his premature death following a private, four-year cancer battle.
“This is hard to process,” they share in a short statement to Deadline.
“Chadwick was an incredibly elegant and thoughtful individual who conveyed dignity and integrity in a way that very few could. A tremendous talent who inspired a generation to stand up and be king. He understood something unique and noble about life, and was determined to use his talents in ways that impacted. He had so much to give…”
Boseman’s Marvel co-stars Don Cheadle, Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Brie Larson, and Mark Ruffalo were among the first to express their sadness online after the news broke on Friday night (28Aug20), and “Iron Man” actor Robert Downey Jr. has since added to the tributes.
“Mr. Boseman leveled the playing field while fighting for his life… That’s heroism… I’ll remember the good times, the laughter, and the way he changed the game #chadwickforever,” he posted, alongside video footage of the pals messing around.
Gwyneth Paltrow, Angela Bassett, Sterling K. Brown, and Samuel L. Jackson are among the colleagues who have also honoured his memory on social media, as have Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige, Disney chief Bob Iger, and “Black Panther” director Ryan Coogler.
A U.S. TV special has been organised to air on the Disney-owned ABC network on Sunday night, following a commercial-free broadcast of “Black Panther”.
“Chadwick Boseman – A Tribute for a King” will celebrate the actor’s life and career, and reflect on his legacy and the cultural impact he had both on and off-camera.
It will also shed light on the disease which claimed his life – colon cancer, an illness he kept under wraps while paying special hospital visits to children with terminal health conditions. A representative for the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital charity shared images of Boseman with young fans online and wrote, “We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of our friend Chadwick Boseman.”
“Two years ago, Chadwick visited the St. Jude campus and brought with him not only toys for our patients but also joy, courage and inspiration. He was an incredible role model for our patients and children from all around the world. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this time.”
And officials at the Colorectal Cancer Alliance have taken the opportunity to raise awareness about colon cancer, a “young-onset” disease which is “on the rise and cuts short thousands of lives every year.”
CEO Michael Sapienza added, “Colorectal cancer benefits from an intense stigma, particularly in the Black community. Cancer is a personal battle, and we respect Boseman’s choice to shield the public from his diagnosis. The Alliance, however, encourages open conversations about this disease. Even superheroes can develop colorectal cancer…”
“With education and awareness to defeat the stigma, resources for those diagnosed, and innovative research toward cures, we can end colorectal cancer in our lifetime.”
