  • 'Cuties' Gets Support From French Film Officials Amid Backlash in U.S.

    Netflix

France’s top film organization cites ‘the freedom of artistic creation and expression’ as they support the Netflix movie which sparks outrage for allegedly sexualizing children.
    Sep 20, 2020
AceShowbiz – Officials at France’s top film organisation Unifrance have pledged to support director Maimouna Doucour’s documentary “Cuties”, insisting critics who have blasted the film in America have missed the point.
The controversial film chronicles the story of an 11-year-old Senegalese girl in Paris, who joins a free-spirited dance troupe to escape family dysfunction.
The movie won acclaim when it debuted at January’s (20) Sundance Film Festival in Utah for its portrayal of the hypersexualisation of pre-teen girls, and Netflix bosses brokered a deal for the worldwide rights for the project and launched it earlier this month (Sep20) on the streaming platform.
The film came out amid drama linked to a promotional poster, featuring its young stars, which critics slammed for being inappropriate and suggestive. Some went so far as to create a #CancelNetflix movement over the billboard and Doucour has since revealed she received death threats over the controversy.

Now, officials at the French government-backed film group have pledged their full support to the filmmaker and the movie’s producers in a statement released on Friday (18Sep20), which reads in part, “Over the past several weeks, we have been closely following the exceptionally violent reaction to the film in the United States, during a presidential election campaign in full swing.”
“In this context, UniFrance and all of its members wish to pledge their full support to Maimouna Doucoure and to reaffirm their commitment to supporting the freedom of artistic creation and expression. This is because one of the great strengths of cinema is its capacity to reach beyond borders and boundaries, and to offer a critical and constructive viewpoint on the world and the excesses of today’s societies.”
Doucour also spoke out about the movie this week (14Sep20) at a Toronto Film Festival panel in Canada, promoted by UniFrance. She insisted her intention in making Cuties was to “sound the alarm” on the subject of “protecting our children.”
Netflix bosses also previously defended their contentious acquisition in a statement to Variety, describing Cuties as “a social commentary against the sexualization of young children… and a powerful story about the pressure young girls face on social media and from society more generally growing up.”
They added, “We’d encourage anyone who cares about these important issues to watch the movie.”

  • Cancel Netflix Petition Launched Amid Backlash Over Controversial Movie 'Cuties'

    Bien Ou Bien Productions

Maimouna Doucoure, director of the 18+ award-winning film, has previously revealed she received ‘numerous death threats’ due to an inappropriately sexualised poster used to promote the movie.
    Sep 11, 2020
AceShowbiz – Netflix’s movie “Cuties” continues to face resistance from people due to its controversial theme. Amid growing backlash over the movie, people have launched a petition to cancel the streaming service and made #CancelNetflix trending on Twitter on Thursday, September 10.
Those who complained about the film mainly took issue with the fact that it focuses on young girls while the movie itself is labeled for 18+. “This movie/show is disgusting as it sexualizes an ELEVEN year old for the viewing pleasure of pedophiles and also negatively influences our children!” wrote the petition creator, Allison M.
“There is no need for this kind of content in that age group, especially when sex trafficking and pedophilia are so rampant! There is no excuse, this is dangerous content!” she went on claiming. Allison also urged people who signed the petition to support another petition “to the FBI to Charge Netflix with Distribution of Inappropriate Child Material!”
More than 300,000 people have signed the petition and the number is rapidly growing. One of them left a comment which read, “Eleven year olds don’t need to be sexualized.” Another simply noted, “This is disgusting.”
Another critic posted on Twitter, “Netflix…this is not fine. 18+ movie about 11 yr old girls is not fine,” adding, “I wont #CancelNetfilx but please you must be critical on this. You can do better than this.” Another user’s comment was more harsh, slamming the company, “All the proof you need to realize critics are shills, cowards and obsolete.”
“WOWW NETFLIX JUST F**KED UP BIG BIG BIG BIG TIMESS,” an appalled user wrote. “its crazy that they literally released a f**king child pornography movie and had like 650 11 years old twerking for the auditions. its disgusting and sickening #CancelNetfilx [sic].”
Netflix previously faced backlash over a poster used to promote “Cuties” which was accused of sexualizing young girls. After the company removed it, director of the French film, Maimouna Doucoure, revealed she received death threats over the poster controversy.
“I received numerous attacks on my character from people who had not seen the film, who thought I was actually making a film that was apologetic about hypersexualiation of children,” she told Deadline earlier this month. “I also received numerous death threats.”
“Cuties” centers on a traditional Senegalese Muslim girl who is caught between two contrasting sides, traditional values and Internet culture. The coming-of-age comedy-drama nabbed Directing Award-Dramatic for filmmaker Doucoure at the Sundance Film Festival.

  • 'Cuties' Director Gets 'Death Threats' for Allegedly Sexualizing Children Due to Suggestive Poster

    Netflix

Maimouna Doucoure reveals she has received ‘numerous death threats’ following controversial poster released by Netflix to promote her coming-of-age drama.
    Sep 4, 2020
AceShowbiz – French filmmaker Maimouna Doucoure received death threats after her coming-of-age dance drama “Cuties” launch on Netflix was advertised with an inappropriately sexualised poster.
The film earned praise when it debuted at January’s (20) Sundance Film Festival in Utah for how it addressed the hypersexualisation of young girls, but its release was hit by controversy due to a suggestive poster of its child stars posing in their dancing outfits.
The poster sparked a huge backlash, with an online petition associating it with paedophilia gaining more than 126,000 signatures, and Doucoure says she also received death threats from furious members of the public.
“I received numerous attacks on my character from people who had not seen the film, who thought I was actually making a film that was apologetic about hypersexualiation of children,” she tells Deadline.com. “I also received numerous death threats.”
The director and screenwriter found the furore all the more bizarre as she has been focusing on promoting the film, about a girl from a traditional French-African family who joins a twerking dance troupe, in France, where it is titled Migonnes.
“I discovered the poster at the same time as the American public,” she explains. “My reaction? It was a strange experience. I hadn’t seen the poster until after I started getting all these reactions on social media, direct messages from people, attacks on me. I didn’t understand what was going on. That was when I went and saw what the poster looked like.”
The filmmaker was backed by many who had seen her debut feature, including “Thor: Ragnarok” actress Tessa Thompson, and she says the Netflix poster was “not representative of the film and especially its message.”
She has, however, made up with Netflix chiefs after receiving a personal apology from the streaming service’s co-CEO Ted Sarandos over the phone.

  • Netflix Apologizes After Being Accused of Sexualizing Children in 'Cuties' Promotion

    Netflix

The bosses at streaming giant are sorry after facing backlash for the ‘inappropriate’ marketing to promote the upcoming movie directed by Maimouna Doucoure.
    Aug 21, 2020
AceShowbiz – Bosses at Netflix have issued an apology for posters promoting the film “Cuties” after they were accused of sexualising children.
Executives at the streamer released a statement on Thursday (20Aug20) following criticism surrounding the marketing linked to the upcoming film from French director Maimouna Doucoure.
“We’re deeply sorry for the inappropriate artwork that we used for Mignonnes/Cuties,” a Netflix spokesperson said. “It was not OK, nor was it representative of this French film, which won an award at Sundance. We’ve now updated the pictures and description.”
The production, which debuted at the Sundance Film Festival in Utah earlier this year (20), stars Fathia Youssouf as an 11-year-old girl who befriends a group of dancers at her school and clashes with her family over their Senegalese Muslim traditions.
One controversial poster image features the young stars of the film striking suggestive dance poses while wearing skin-tight outfits. The shots led to a Change.org petition, signed by over 35,000 participants pushing for the movie to be pulled.
“Cuties” is set to debut on 9 September (20).
