Christopher Nolan Slams Warner Bros.' 'Messy' HBO Max Plans

    WENN/TNYF

The ‘Tenet’ director is in ‘disbelief’ over the studio’s decision to release all of its 2021 movies directly on ‘the worst streaming service,’ saying that ‘their decision makes no economic sense.’

    Dec 8, 2020
AceShowbiz – Christopher Nolan has spoken up against Warner Bros./HBO Max deal. The studio shocked fans and blindsided filmmakers and actors with their major decision to release their entire slate of 2021 movies, including “Dune”, “Godzilla vs. Kong” and “The Matrix 4”, directly on the streaming service.
While none of Nolan’s upcoming projects is included in the Warner Bros./HBO Max deal, the filmmaker couldn’t help empathizing with other industry workers. In a statement released to The Hollywood Reporter, the “Interstellar” director slammed the studio for the decision to skip theatrical release altogether and bring their movies to “the worst streaming service.”
“Some of our industry’s biggest filmmakers and most important movie stars went to bed the night before thinking they were working for the greatest movie studio and woke up to find out they were working for the worst streaming service,” he said in the statement.
“Warner Bros. had an incredible machine for getting a filmmaker’s work out everywhere, both in theaters and in the home, and they are dismantling it as we speak,” he continued. Believing that it won’t benefit anyone, Nolan added, “They don’t even understand what they’re losing. Their decision makes no economic sense, and even the most casual Wall Street investor can see the difference between disruption and dysfunction.”
Nolan also weighed in on Warner Bros.’ decision during an interview with ET Online. Admitting that he’s in “disbelief” with the studio’s move, he called out the studio for not consulting the filmmakers beforehand.

“In 2021, they’ve got some of the top filmmakers in the world, they’ve got some of the biggest stars in the world who worked for years in some cases on these projects very close to their hearts that are meant to be big-screen experiences,” he explained what became a major letdown in the decision. “They’re meant to be out there for the widest possible audiences… And now they’re being used as a loss-leader for the streaming service — for the fledgling streaming service — without any consultation.”
Calling it “very, very, very, very messy,” he noticed there’s “a lot of controversy” to it. He went on describing the situation, “A real bait and switch. Yeah, it’s sort of not how you treat filmmakers and stars and people who, these guys have given a lot for these projects. They deserved to be consulted and spoken to about what was going to happen to their work.”
Expressing his faith that theaters will be back on full steam once COVID-19 is under control, he said, “Long-term, I think all of the studios know that the movie theater experience will bounce back and be a very important part of the ecosystem long-term.” He went on slamming movie studios for using “the pandemic as an excuse for sort of grappling for short-term advantage.”
“And it’s really unfortunate,” the London-born filmmaker lamented. “It’s not the way to do business and it’s not the best thing for the health of our industry. But when the theaters are back and people are going back to the movies, when the vaccine has been rolled out and there’s an appropriate health response from the federal government, I’m very bullish on the long-term prospects of the industry. People love going to the movies and they’re going to get to go again.”
Nolan himself had his latest film “Tenet” released in select theaters in August, becoming the first Hollywood tentpole to open in theaters during the pandemic, before heading to digital services on December 15. Warner Bros. is also the studio behind the sci-fi action movie.
Similar to Nolan, James Gunn, whose movie “The Suicide Squad” is among Warner Bros.’ 2021 slate, is reportedly unhappy with the decision. Sources told THR that the “platform-agnostic” director was “not pleased when the studio followed its shocking announcement by floating a lackluster formula for compensating him and other profit participants” in upcoming standalone sequel to 2016’s “Suicide Squad”.

'Dune' and 'Matrix 4' Among 2021 Movies WarnerMedia Will Stream on HBO Max

    Warner Bros. Pictures

The studio chiefs call the move to release their entire slate of 2021 movies via the streaming platform instead of film theaters ‘a strategic response to the impact of the ongoing global pandemic’.

    Dec 4, 2020
AceShowbiz – WarnerMedia bosses are to release their entire slate of 2021 movies to streaming platform HBO Max as they hit cinemas.
The film chiefs will be launching the much anticipated “Wonder Woman” sequel on the service on Christmas Day (December 25), but they are not waiting to see if the blockbuster finds success in the home video market and have decided all upcoming releases will spend their first month on HBO Max, which launched earlier this year.
That means film fans who subscribe to the service will be able to watch Denzel Washington’s new film “Little Things”, “Tom & Jerry”, “Godzilla vs. Kong”, “Mortal Kombat”, “The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It”, “In The Heights”, “Space Jam: A New Legacy”, “The Suicide Squad”, “Dune”, “The Many Saints of Newark”, and “The Matrix 4” from the comfort of their sofa.

“The hybrid model was created as a strategic response to the impact of the ongoing global pandemic,” a studio statement reads. “Movie theaters aren’t apt to be entirely happy with this and it will be interesting to see what they charge for admission to the Warner Bros’ movies.”
“After considering all available options and the projected state of moviegoing throughout 2021, we came to the conclusion that this was the best way for WarnerMedia’s motion picture business to navigate the next 12 months,” WarnerMedia CEO Jason Kilar added. “More importantly, we are planning to bring consumers 17 remarkable movies throughout the year, giving them the choice and the power to decide how they want to enjoy these films. Our content is extremely valuable, unless it’s sitting on a shelf not being seen by anyone. We believe this approach serves our fans, supports exhibitors and filmmakers, and enhances the HBO Max experience, creating value for all.”

  • 'The Batman' Pushed Back to 2022 Due to 'Dune' Delay

    Warner Bros. Pictures/Legendary Entertainment

Warner Bros. is making more adjustments to its slate after moving Denis Villeneuve’s highly-anticipated remake to the Robert Pattinson-starring superhero movie’s old date.
    Oct 6, 2020
AceShowbiz – Another day, another movie is getting a new release date due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic that has slowed down the domestic box office, despite the reopening of a number of theaters across the nation. Matt Reeves’ “The Batman” is the latest potential big blockbuster which is delayed after Warner Bros. earlier announced a new date for “Dune”.
As expected, the Robert Pattinson-starring superhero movie is now pushed back to 2022 after it was forced to vacate its old date for the highly-anticipated sci-fi remake from director Denis Villeneuve. “The Batman” is now no longer scheduled to open on October 1, 2021, being pushed back five months to March 4, 2022. “Dune” is taking over “The Batman” old date.
WB has also shifted the dates for other movies, including “The Matrix 4”, which is moved up several months. Initially set for April 1, 2022 release, it is now expected to bow in U.S. theaters on December 22, 2021.
Ezra Miller’s “The Flash”, meanwhile, is moved to November 4, 2022 to give room to a yet-announced film on June 3, 2022. Another secret project from the studio is set for August 5, 2022 release. As for “Shazam! Fury of the Gods”, it has been pushed back from November 2, 2022 to June 2, 2023.

Another superhero adventure film “Black Adam”, which is also based on a DC Comics character, and video game adaptation “Minecraft” have been left dealing with major uncertainty as the studio pulled off the two movies from the December 22, 2021 and March 3, 2022 date respectively.
Other than “Dune”, Warner Bros. says the latest release date shuffle is due to production delays. “The Batman”, for example, suspended production in March after the global pandemic hit the U.K., where it was filmed.
Shooting on the superhero movie resumed in early September after the British government gave the green light for high-end TV and film productions to resume shooting, as soon as employers put coronavirus safety measures in place.
However, the production was put on pause again after only three days because the lead star, Pattinson, tested positive for COVID-19. Filming resumed on September 17, after the British actor was cleared to return.

  • Denis Villeneuve's 'Dune' Remake Gets 10-Month Delay for Its Release

    Legendary Entertainment

This postponement comes after officials at Warner Bros. once again rescheduled the premiere of ‘Wonder Woman 1984’, pushing it from early October 2020 to Christmas Day.
    Oct 6, 2020
AceShowbiz – The release of director Denis Villeneuve’s highly-anticipated “Dune” remake has been bumped to October 2021.
Film fans had been hoping to check out the sci-fi blockbuster in theatres just before Christmas (20), but with coronavirus cases on the rise again and movie theatres in a number of key U.S. markets still shuttered, studio officials at Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures have chosen to delay Dune’s debut by 10 months.
It will now open on 1 October (21).

The postponement was expected by industry experts after Warner Bros. bosses once again rescheduled the premiere of “Wonder Woman 1984”, recently pushing it from early October to Christmas Day, December 25.
“Dune” new launch currently clashes with another Warner release as “The Batman” is also expected to hit theatres on the same day, suggesting Robert Pattinson’s first outing as the Caped Crusader could soon be forced to fly to another date.
“Dune” is the latest blockbuster to have its release reshuffled – last week (October 02), the latest James Bond movie, “No Time to Die”, was also moved from late November to April, prompting Regal theatre chain owners to close down its locations across the U.S. just weeks after many reopened in August.
Due to the clash with the new date of “No Time to Die”, the release of the ninth “Fast and Furious” movie has been subsequently been moved as well. “F9”, which was initially set to race to theaters over the 2021 Easter weekend, has been pushed back to the Memorial Day weekend in May.

  • Hans Zimmer Forced to Use Facetime to Rework A Pink Floyd Classic for 'Dune'

    Instagram

The Oscar-winning composer has to come up with a unique recording technique when conducting a 32-person Los Angeles-based choir because of coronavirus safety protocols.
    Sep 18, 2020
AceShowbiz – Composer Hans Zimmer has been getting inventive during the COVID-19 pandemic by recording a new version of a classic Pink Floyd track for sci-fi blockbuster “Dune” over FaceTime.
The Oscar winner has reworked the rock band’s “Eclipse” for the new adaptation of Frank Herbert’s novel, directed by “Blade Runner 2049” filmmaker Denis Villeneuve, but because of coronavirus safety protocols, he was forced to come up with a unique recording technique.
Zimmer enlisted his choral expert, Edie Lehmann Boddicker, to oversee a 32-person Los Angeles-based choir, which gathered four at a time at the musician’s Remote Control recording studio in Santa Monica, California for eight vocal sessions.
Meanwhile, Hans stayed at home, conducting his classical singers via FaceTime to minimise person-to-person contact.
“We followed all the (COVID-19) protocols,” Boddicker tells Variety. “Everybody wore masks except when they were in their separate cubicles, divided by glass, all with their own mics, and everything was wiped down between sessions.”
Edie adds that Zimmer’s intention for the piece was to create a sound “not of this planet”, adding, “He wanted to pay homage to the original, very back-phrased sound, a little spaced-out, so the vocals would not sound urgent. There’s a kind of joy happening in the track, a lot of hopefulness. It’s not despondent, just very peaceful…”.
The new version of the song, the last track on Pink Floyd’s iconic 1973 album “The Dark Side of the Moon”, can be heard in the new trailer for “Dune”, which launched last week (September 9), and has already been viewed on YouTube more than 23 million times.
Meanwhile, digital sales of Eclipse have soared by 1,750 per cent since the trailer’s release.
“Dune”, starring Timothee Chalamet and Zendaya Coleman, is scheduled to hit cinemas in December.

  • First Full 'Dune' Trailer Sees Timothee Chalamet's Painful Training

    [embedded content]

Depicted as a sort of reluctant hero, Chalamet’s Paul Atreides is prepared to rule people as his father is about to lose the planet Arrakis awarded to him.
    Sep 10, 2020
AceShowbiz – Warner Bros. has released the first full trailer for its highly-anticipated epic film, “Dune”. From director Denis Villeneuve, the sci-fi movie follows Timothee Chalamet’s main character Paul Atreides, the scion of House Atreides.
The young royal is depicted as a reluctant hero, who rises to lead a war in a desolate, dangerous mining planet known as Arrakis, which is awarded to his father Duke Leto Atreides (Oscar Isaac). “There’s something happening to me. There’s something awakening in my mind and I can’t control it,” Paul says in the video.
As Paul sees a crusade in his dream, Gaius Helen Mohiam (Charlotte Rampling) warns him that his father is about to lose the planet Arrakis. Under the guidance of Gaius, Paul learns how to rule people though her teaching method sometimes includes a painful test.
“Is the mental part of him stronger than the animal part? That was very important for [‘Dune’ author] Frank Herbert,” Villeneuve explains the painful training to EW. “At some point in the Dune history, the human brain will reach a level of control where there’s no more computers in that universe, so the brain is trained to be able to make insane calculations and have control over your body. Paul, having some Bene Gesserit training, needed to be tested to see if he can use this power for the good of humanity.”
Gurney Halleck (Josh Brolin) is Paul’s sparring partner in a sword fight, while there’s a glimpse of Jason Momoa’s Duncan Idaho, who is also one of Paul’s mentors. Zendaya Coleman’s Chani is a mysterious woman who appears in Paul’s dream and will later become his love interest.
“Dune” is based on Frank Herbert’s 1965 sci-fi novel of the same name, which was previously adapted into a 1984 movie and multiple TV miniseries. The upcoming film will cover the first-half of the book, with a planned sequel handling the rest.
The star-studded cast also includes Rebecca Ferguson (II) as Paul’s mother Lady Jessica Atreides, Dave Bautista as Glossu Rabban, Javier Bardem as Stilgar, and Chang Chen as Dr. Wellington Yueh among others. Villeneuve co-wrote the script with Jon Spaihts and Eric Roth. The movie is scheduled to be released in the United States in IMAX and 3D on December 18.

Denis Villeneuve Hopes to Shoot Additional Scenes for 'Dune' Remake in Mid-August

    WENN

Oscar Isaac, the actor playing Duke Leto Atreides, confirms that the director has scheduled for the filming to be done in Budapest, Hungary a few months before the film is expected to come out.
    Jun 19, 2020
AceShowbiz – Moviemaker Denis Villeneuve and the cast of his ambitious “Dune” remake are heading back to Hungary this summer for a series of reshoots.
It appears the director isn’t completely happy with the finished cut of the film, and he’s hoping to squeeze in a few new scenes before the epic hits cinemas on December 18.
The additional shoots, which are not expected to delay the project’s opening, will take place in Budapest, Hungary, where the cast and crew filmed last year (19).
“Dune” star Oscar Isaac has confirmed the news, telling Deadline.com, “We’re going to do some additional shooting in mid August…”.
“I saw some things cut together and it just looks amazing. Denis is a real artist and it will be exciting to see it come together. It’s kind of wild that we’re doing some additional shooting a few months before it’s supposed to come out, but that happened with Star Wars as well.”

Timothee Chalamet Recalls Struggles During 'Dune' Remake Filming in Jordan Desert

    Warner Bros. Pictures

Director Denis Villeneuve, in the meantime, admits that his latest adaptation of Frank Herbert’s book is ‘by far the most difficult thing’ he has done in his life.
    Apr 15, 2020
AceShowbiz – Timothee Chalamet struggled to shoot the new “Dune” remake in the heat of the Jordan desert.
Images of the actor in character as Paul Atreides have been released by Vanity Fair and Timothee tells the magazine there were nights he couldn’t sleep because it was so hot.
“I remember going out of my room at 2am, and it being probably 100 degrees,” he recalls. “The shooting temperature was sometimes 120 degrees. They put a cap on it out there, if it gets too hot. I forget what the exact number is, but you can’t keep working.”
Meanwhile, director Denis Villeneuve claims the sci-fi epic is the most difficult thing he’s ever put together.
“I would not agree to make this adaptation of the book with one single movie,” the “Blade Runner 2049” filmmaker tells Vanity Fair. “The world is too complex. It’s a world that takes its power in details.”
“It’s a book that tackles politics, religion, ecology, spirituality – and with a lot of characters. I think that’s why it’s so difficult. Honestly, it’s by far the most difficult thing I’ve done in my life.”

The latest adaptation of Frank Herbert’s book, also featuring Zendaya Coleman, Jason Momoa, Oscar Isaac and “No Country for Old Men” castmates Javier Bardem and Josh Brolin, is scheduled to hit cinemas on December 18.
