  • 'Game of Thrones': Nikolaj Coster-Waldau Claims He Wanted to Donate to Fans' Season 8 Redo Petition

    HBO

Despite finding the petition hilarious, the Jaime Lanister depicter shares in a new interview that he once wanted to support fans who demanded a reshooting of season 8.
    Aug 15, 2020
AceShowbiz – While some “Game of Thrones” stars were against fans’ petition to change how season 8 ended, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau admitted that he almost signed the fan petition. Despite finding the petition hilarious, the Jaime Lanister depicter said he wanted to support the project.
“I was aware of the petition for a new ending, which I thought was hilarious,” he remarked during a new interview with Variety. “I almost wanted to donate to that petition. HBO saying, ‘You’re right, so many people want it, we’re going to do it.’ ”
He went on to say, “I think everyone had their own opinion. I find the world of fandom really interesting. Everyone wanted something specific and different from what they got. It’s a combination of – you imagine an ending; but also, I think if you’re a hardcore fan, it was really upsetting that it ended.”
“You lived with this for eight seasons. There is still a massive community dedicated to ‘Game of Thrones’. I think there was a real fear that was going to go away. It had to end,” he continued.
Fans vocally expressed their dissatisfaction in the 6-part final season, prompting them to launch the Change.org petition on Monday, May 13, demanding network bosses rework the show’s final season with a new group of creatives. “(Show creators) David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have proven themselves to be woefully incompetent writers when they have no source material (i.e. the books) to fall back on,” the originator of the list wrote. “This series deserves a final season that makes sense. Subvert my expectations and make it happen, HBO!”
The outcry came a day after fans blasted the show’s penultimate episode, which aired on Sunday, May 12. Many were left more than a little upset by a fiery dragon rampage, led by Emilia Clarke’s “mad queen” character Daenerys Targaryen, and the sudden deaths of a handful of regulars.

  • 'Game of Thrones' Star Understands Outrage Over Missandei's Cruel Death

    HBO

Nathalie Emmanuel says she understands why black fans are upset as the sole black female lead was viciously killed in the final season of the HBO hit series.
    Jul 26, 2020
AceShowbiz – Nathalie Emmanuel has reflected on her bloody end in hit show “Game of Thrones” and insisted if she were to do another big show, the subject of diversity should not be an afterthought.
In the wake of the global Black Lives Matter movement, Emmanuel has reflected on the brutal way her character, Missandei, a translator freed from slavery by Emilia Clarke’s Daenerys Targaryen, died – chained and viciously beheaded in the final season.
In an interview with British Vogue, the actress revealed she understood the huge outcry from “Game of Thrones” black fans over the death of its sole black female lead as they had long criticised the show over its lack of diversity.
“I definitely understood beforehand what my role meant to people,” she reflected. “But the days after that episode really brought it home… When it comes down to it, the backlash stems from the fact that, when there’s so few non-white characters on-screen, a death like that registers as a massive loss.”
She continued, “It definitely caused me to reflect a lot more – about race and diversity more generally. At the end of the day, if there’s ever a show on the level of Game of Thrones again, representation has to be part of the conversation from the beginning. That way, there’s no single person who has to represent every other person of colour.”
The British actress admitted she often discussed her concerns over her character’s representation with her co-star Jacob Anderson as she became aware of how much their presence on the show mattered to fans of the hit HBO fantasy series.
“It’s a conversation I used to have a lot with Jacob (Anderson), who played Grey Worm, the only other major non-white character in the series,” she added. “We were always really conscious of how much our being part of Game of Thrones mattered to people. It made us really protective of Missandei and Grey Worm.”

'Game of Thrones' Author Plans 2021 Release of New 'A Song of Ice and Fire' Novel

    WENN

In an update to fans, George R.R. Martin credits self-isolation during the coronavirus pandemic for him making steady progress on his latest work, ‘The Winds of Winter’.
    Jun 25, 2020
AceShowbiz – “Game of Thrones” author George R.R. Martin is planning to finish his latest “A Song of Ice and Fire” novel by next year (21).
Fans of his books, and the hit HBO fantasy series based on them, have long been kept waiting for new installments, with the last, “A Dance with Dragons”, coming out in 2011 as the first season of the TV show aired.
However, in an update published on his blog, the 71-year-old novelist told fans the COVID-19 pandemic means he is making swift progress on the next book, “The Winds of Winter”, and plans to have it “done” in time for a trip to Wellington, New Zealand “next year.”
He wrote that he is working on the novel in “an actual cabin in the mountains” and is staying healthy by self-isolating during the coronavirus crisis.
Updating fans on his work, George added, “If nothing else, the enforced isolation has helped me write. I am spending long hours every day on THE WINDS OF WINTER, and making steady progress.”
“I finished a new chapter yesterday, another one three days ago, another one the previous week. But no, this does not mean that the book will be finished tomorrow or published next week. It’s going to be a huge book, and I still have a long way to go.”

The final series of the “Game of Thrones” TV show aired last year (19), with the TV series overtaking Martin’s books due to the long delay in completing “The Winds of Winter”.

Emilia Clarke Still 'Mad' Her 'Game of Thrones' Character Didn't Get Happy Ending

    HBO

During an interview, the Daenerys Targaryen depicter also admits that she’s still annoyed by the fact that Kit Harington’s character Jon Snow could get away with murder.
    Mar 18, 2020
AceShowbiz – Emilia Clarke was “annoyed” that Kit Harington’s Jon Snow “got away with murder” in the finale of “Game of Thrones”.
The hit HBO show wrapped its eighth and final series last May (19) and, reflecting on the death of her beloved character, Daenerys Targaryen, who was murdered by her former-lover Jon Snow, she told Britain’s The Times newspaper she’s still not over the ending.
“Yeah, I felt for her. I really felt for her. And yeah, was I annoyed that Jon Snow didn’t have to deal with something? He got away with murder — literally,” she said.
Despite her frustrations, Emilia had known the ending for years, and she added that when the show finally did come to a close, “it felt like coming out of a bunker. Everything felt really strange.”
“I knew how I felt when I first read it, and I tried, at every turn, not to consider too much what other people might say, but I did always consider what the fans might think — because we did it for them, and they were the ones who made us successful, so… it’s just polite, isn’t it?” she shared.
When asked if she was mad that Daenerys didn’t get a “happy ending”, Emilia admitted that she was, but added that the show was a “gift” for her as an actor.
And she hinted she wasn’t entirely ready to call it a day just yet, adding: “We could have spun it out for a little longer.”
