“Godzilla vs. Kong” is unmoveable in its second week at North American box office. The Adam Wingard-directed epic monster movie stays atop the list with approximately $13.4 million, bringing its current total domestic gross to $69.5 million.

As it’s expected to cross a $100 million marks domestically, a rare achievement for a movie in this pandemic era, the film has become the top-grossing pic of the pandemic era in North America. It passed Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet” total domestic gross of $57.9 million in 2020.

Internationally, “Godzilla vs. Kong” has grossed $288.3 million for a current worldwide total of $357.8 million. According to Deadline, the movie is already set to make profit for Warner Bros., an estimated $96.4 million currently.

“Godzilla vs. Kong” easily became a new hit upon its release in the United States on March 31. It set record for the biggest opening in the COVID-19 pandemic era with $32.2 million for the three-day weekend. The first week’s domestic sales were roughly double that of “Wonder Woman 1984” (also from WB), which previously held record for the best weekend opening in the pandemic era with $16.7 million.

“We’re thrilled that ‘Godzilla vs. Kong’ is bringing audiences back into theaters where they are open around the world, and also delivering for our HBO Max subscribers in their homes here in the U.S.,” Warner Bros. Pictures Group chairman Toby Emmerich said in a statement.

Back to this week’s box office, Bob Odenkirk’s “Nobody” bounces back to No. 2 with an estimated addition of $2.6 million. It pushes last week’s new release “The Unholy”, which bags approximately $2.4 million, to the third place.

“Raya and the Last Dragon” stays put in the fourth spot with approximately $2.1 million. Rounding up the top five this week is new release “Voyagers”, a sci-fi film written and directed by Neil Burger and starring Tye Sheridan along with Lily-Rose Depp. The movie opened to an estimated $1.35 million as it received mixed reviews from critics.

“Godzilla vs Kong” is roaring on its opening weekend in North American box office. The Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. movie sets record for the biggest opening in the COVID-19 pandemic era, with an estimated $32.2 million for the three-day weekend.

Taking advantage of the Easter holiday, the epic monster showdown film collected approximately $48.5 over the five-day Good Friday holiday period. The domestic sales were roughly double that of “Wonder Woman 1984” (also from WB), which previously held record for the best weekend opening in the pandemic era with $16.7 million.

“This is the best news the theatrical side of the business has had in over a year,” said Comscore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian. He pointed out that the results proved a big budget sci-fi action extravaganza like “Godzilla vs Kong” is “tailor-made for the immersive and impactful experience that only the big screen can provide.”

Joshua Grode, CEO of Legendary, added, “I think a big movie like this working should tell everyone if we are rational in how we release a title, there is an appetite for people to have a shared experience in theaters.” He said the decision to release the film theatrically wasn’t for the “faint of heart,” but that it was the “right movie for the moment.”

    87North/Legendary Entertainment

While the Bob Odenkirk-starring action thriller takes the lead domestically, the epic monster movie breaks record for the biggest international box office debut by a Hollywood film during the pandemic era.

    Mar 29, 2021

    AceShowbiz –
“Nobody” has inked its name on top of the North American box office. Universal’s action genre-defying pic starring Bob Odenkirk takes the lead with approximately $6.7 million domestically on its debut weekend.

It’s a fairly good start for the low-budget movie, which reportedly only cost $16 million to make. Universal, meanwhile, acquired the film from STX for about $10 million. The movie benefits from New York and Los Angeles theater openings.

The film’s $6.7 million opening gross makes up one third of the weekend’s $19 million overall total. Internationally, it grossed $5 million for a worldwide total of $11.7 million.

Another new release this week is “Tom & Jerry”, which opens at No. 3 with an estimated $2.5 million. Last week’s champion “Raya and the Last Dragon” falls one spot to No. 2 with additional $3.5 million. As of Sunday, March 28, the Disney animated movie has grossed $28.4 million domestically and $62.1 million in other territories for a worldwide total of $90.5 million, making it the sixth highest-grossing film of 2021.

“Godzilla vs Kong”, which is set to open in the U.S. simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max on March 31, launched in a total of 39 markets overseas on March 24. It, however, doesn’t open in Japan, the home of “Godzilla”, until May.

'Godzilla vs. Kong' Fans Furious Over Possible Streaming Debut

    Warner Bros.

The follow-up to ‘Godzilla: King of the Monsters’ may skip theatrical release in favor of going to a streamer, with Netflix reportedly already making a $200M offer for the movie.

    Nov 26, 2020
AceShowbiz – The wait is perhaps too long for Legendary Pictures until the time is right to release “Godzilla vs. Kong” in cinemas. After postponing it release date from November 2020 to May 21, 2021, the studio is reportedly considering to skip the planned theatrical release in favor of heading to a streamer.
Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that Netflix is one of the streaming services interested in acquiring the rights to distribute the film. It reportedly has made an offer of more than $200 million for the film.
While it sounds like a lucrative deal, Legendary Pictures may not be sold that easily. Warner Bros., which currently holds the worldwide distribution rights for the movie except for in Japan, reportedly has blocked the deal and intends to bring it to its own streamer, HBO Max.
However, as of Wednesday night, November 25, Warner Bros. denied that there’s a plan for the movie to skip the theatrical release and head straight to streaming service. “We plan to release ‘Godzilla vs. Kong’ theatrically next year as scheduled,” said a spokesperson for the studio.
Despite the unconfirmed reports, fans couldn’t help feeling disappointed should the sequel to 2019’s “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” and 2017’s Kong: Skull Island really head to a streamer. Reacting to the news on Twitter, they expressed their disagreement with the alleged plan for streaming debut.

“I hate this so much. #GodzillaVsKong deserves to be seen on the biggest movie screen possible. Don’t do this, @wbpictures,” one fan warned the studio. Another echoed the sentiment, “#GodzillavsKong is Made For IMAX and the big screen. Going to streaming is a big mistake!!!”
“Jesus… the theater industry is taking hit after hit over these moves to streaming. I can’t see this being good for any of them in the long run. This news makes me sad,” a third person lamented the movie industry amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
Another said that he’d rather wait longer to see it in theater rather than having the film released earlier on a streaming service. “@Legendary @wbpictures I’ll gladly wait another year to see Godzilla vs. Kong on the big screen, as intended. Please, please don’t skip the theatrical release!” the said person pleaded.
Someone else expressed her/his opinion, “Omg this is super big bruh moment if I don’t get to see Godzilla vs Kong the climatic rematch of the century on IMAX I’m a cry. I really wanted to see Godzilla and Kong again on the movie screen super badly!”
“Godzilla vs. Kong” wrapped filming in April 2019 with Adam Wingard serving behind the lens. Starring Alexander Skarsgard, Millie Bobby Brown and Rebecca Hall among others, it will pit Godzilla against King Kong, the two most powerful forces of nature, in a spectacular battle for the ages.
