James Corden Slammed for 'Offensive' Gay Portrayal in 'The Prom'

    Netflix

The ‘Into the Woods’ star is heavily criticized for his stereotypical, ‘appalling and terminally bland’ performance as gay Broadway actor Barry Glickman in Ryan Murphy’s Netflix movie.

    Dec 2, 2020
AceShowbiz – James Corden’s performance in “The Prom” has drawn the ire of movie critics. The actor/comedian has sparked backlash for his “offensive” portrayal of a gay character in the Netflix musical film, which is directed by Ryan Murphy.
In the upcoming movie, “The Late Late Show with James Corden” host plays gay Broadway actor Barry Glickman whose star is fading. Calling it miscasting, some critics believe that the role should have gone to Nathan Lane.
Vanity Fair’s Richard Lawson wrote in his review, “Corden, who is straight, is so bad in ‘The Prom’-somehow both appalling and terminally bland.” He described the British star’s performance as “flitting and lisping around in the most uninspired of caricatures, misses all potential for nuance, and thus never finds even a hint of truth in the role.”
Newsweek critic Samuel Spencer dubbed Corden’s stereotypical performance “offensive,” while The Hollywood Reporter critic David Rooney agreed that the “Cats” star plays “a flaming gay stereotype” and “channels the mannerisms without the joy.” As the result, “It’s a flat performance without much heart.”

The Telegraph critic Tim Robey opined, “In a cast full of talented queer actors in the younger parts, it’s a massive problem to have Corden in gay-face front and center.” He took issue with a particular scene “when he grabs Emma’s (Jo Ellen Pellman) hand and whisks her to the mall for a makeover.” He explained, “It’s an insult the film doesn’t even consider, stereotyping the young lesbian as fashion-clueless and the gay man as a bustling Queer Eye nightmare who made this reviewer embarrassed to be batting for the same team.”
Digital Spy critic Ian Sandwell blamed Murphy for making “a major error in the casting of James Corden as the musical’s gay male lead character.” He argued, “The result sees Corden camp it up to the point of being regressive and offensive, hitting every gay stereotype along the way.”
Among the many critics, however, TV Guide writer Damian Holbrook begged to differ, praising Corden’s performance as “fantastic.” When a Twitter user asked him in disbelief, “The pussy from Cats is fantastic?” he replied, “I know!”
Neither Corden nor Murphy has responded to the backlash.
“The Prom” centers on fading Broadway stars who are determined to make a high school student’s prom dream come true as part of PR stunt to resurrect her public image. The star-studded cast also includes Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman, Keegan-Michael Key, Andrew Rannells and Kerry Washington among others. The movie will be available for streaming on Netflix beginning December 11.

  • James Corden Performs Parody Song to Slam Donald Trump Over Response to Covid-19 Diagnosis

    CBS

In the latest episode of ‘The Late Late Show with James Corden’, the TV host sings, ‘Maybe I don’t wear a mask ’cause I don’t care about others/ Science I don’t really understand.’
    Oct 8, 2020
AceShowbiz – Donald Trump has become the butt of the Internet jokes ever since he revealed his COVID-19 diagnosis, though it soon turned into a criticism because of how he behaved despite the diagnosis. James Corden was among those critics, belting out a parody song of Paul McCartney’s “Maybe I’m Amazed”.
The TV host delivered his performance in the Tuesday night, October 6 episode of “The Late Late Show with James Corden”. It began with a voiceover from Trump who said, “And I learned so much about coronavirus…And I know there’s a risk, there’s a danger, but that’s ok. And now I’m better and maybe I’m immune, I don’t know.” The scene then cut to show James sitting behind a piano before he started belting out the tune.
“Maybe I’m a man/ Maybe I don’t wear a mask ’cause I don’t care about others/ Science I don’t really understand,” he sang, as a viral clip of POTUS seemingly gasping for air during a photo op on Monday night was playing just beside him. “Maybe I’m just high from this experimental cocktail/ Baby I just need some oxygen.”

Beside poking fun at Trump’s COVID-19 diagnosis, James also joked about the upcoming presidential election and how the former entrepreneur is doing at the polls. “Maybe I’m immune to the way the polls are looking now/ Maybe I’m afraid that it’s not fake news/ Maybe I’m immune to all the lies that I have made/ I shouldn’t have downplayed/ Maybe I’m afraid of the way that I might lose this/ Maybe on November 3rd I just might lose this,” he continued rhyming while playing the piano.

James Corden Dissed by Andrew Lloyd Webber Over His 'Cats' Performance

    Universal Pictures

The ‘Late Late Show’ host is criticized by the famed theater director over his onscreen performance in the 2019 musical film after the actor says he has no desire to watch the critically-panned movie.
    Jun 6, 2020
AceShowbiz – Andrew Lloyd Webber has revealed he wasn’t a fan of James Corden’s performance in the movie adaptation of his musical “Cats”.
The British actor turned chat show host played Bustopher Jones in Tom Hooper’s film, which was critically-panned upon its release. And as he screened the filmed 1998 version of “Cats” in memory of his late cat Mika, who was killed last month, May 2020, Andrew also provided a live commentary for fans – during which he didn’t hold back as he slammed James’ portrayal of Bustopher.
“Bustopher without interruption, as I wrote it,” he said of the character in the 1998 version. “Do not be beguiled by other versions. Other versions with unfunny interpolations which I begged to be cut out. I did manage to get the worst of them removed. I cannot tell you how absolutely un-Eliot it all was in this song.”
    T. S. Eliot penned “Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats” – a book of light poems which inspired Lloyd Webber to write “Cats”.
Lloyd Webber’s comments come after Corden opened up about the film’s poor reception during an interview with the New Yorker, admitting that he hadn’t actually watched the movie himself.
“I can’t imagine I’ll see it,” he said. “It’s important to say I had the best time making it. At some point you have to go, How am I going to judge my own experience? Am I only going to have enjoyed something if it was successful?”

James Corden Explains Confusion About Who Drives on 'Carpool Karaoke' After Viral Video

    WENN/Instar

In the Wednesday night, January 29, episode of his show ‘The Late Late Show with James Corden’, the British host addressed the controversial ‘scandal’ in a mock seriousness.
    Jan 31, 2020
AceShowbiz – James Corden has addressed the speculations that he doesn’t drive the car on “Carpool Karaoke” after a fan video, featuring a car with him and Justin Bieber inside being towed on a platform behind a larger vehicle. The clip successfully shocked everyone who thought that James drives the car for all this time. Now, the host has decided to come clean about the “scandal.”
In the Wednesday night, January 29, episode of his show “The Late Late Show with James Corden”, James addressed the issue in a mock seriousness. “I want to assure you that these accusations are not true. I am of course talking about the people saying that I don’t drive the car during ‘Carpool Karaoke’.”
“I know this looks bad,” the British host said. “But I just want to say right now that I always drive the car unless we’re doing something that we think might not be safe, like a dance routine or a costume change … or if I’m drunk,” he joked.
“In the case of Justin Bieber it was a safety issue where we thought it was best to tow the car. Frankly, I just kept getting lost in his eyes,” he continued saying, before reading some headlines calling the scandal was “the worst lie since Santa” and the web series itself “TV’s biggest con.”
“I’m just shocked I’ve done something that’s upset people more than ‘Cats’,” he said. James later flashed a list of the five instances in which his car was towed during the filming of an episode of “Carpool Karaoke”, including Migos, Cardi B and Justin. “I am nothing if not a man of integrity. I swear to you, 95% of the time, I really am endangering the lives of the world’s biggest pop stars.”
    [embedded content]
James himself initially just laughed it off the speculations. Taking it to the official Twitter account of the late night account, the British host joked, “guys, we don’t even use a real car,” alongside a photo of him and Samuel L. Jackson filming CGI scene while holding a car steering wheel control.
The show then set the records straight in a statement. “James always drives during ‘Carpool Karaoke,” the statement read. “However, on the rare occasion when there is a stunt component and the producers feel it is unsafe to drive, we will use a rig (tow).”
