  • John Legend Loves 'Verzuz' for Teaching People About Black Music and Culture

    Instagram

The ‘All of Me’ hitmaker is inspired by the online music battle launched by Swizz Beatz and Timbaland for educating people on the history of black music and culture.
    Jul 6, 2020
AceShowbiz – John Legend is honoured to have made history by appearing on online music battle show “Verzuz” with Alicia Keys for Juneteenth (19Jun20).
The singer took part in the singing showdown on the U.S. cultural holiday, which celebrates the emancipation of African-American slaves, as part of the popular Instagram Live show launched by Alicia’s husband Swizz Beatz and Timbaland in March to bring hip hop and R&B artists from the past and present together.
Detailing his experience with the show during an Apple Music interview on Thursday (02Jul20), the “Glory” singer gushed, “What I love about them (Verzuz episodes) is they’ve really been teaching people about the history of our culture and the music, knowing particularly because so many producers and writers have been a part of it, not just front artists, lead artists, but people who have been behind the scenes, making tracks for people for years. It’s good to see their whole body of work all in one setting, and give them the credit and the flowers that they’re due, for the great work that they’ve done.”
John is inspired to see music producers new and old, like the legendary Babyface, be featured in “Verzuz” competitions.
“When you see someone like Babyface, who was behind so many great, great songs, not just the ones that he fronted, but the ones he wrote for Whitney (Houston) or Toni (Braxton), or so many other artists, Boyz II Men, seeing him get his due respect and honour because of the great work he’s done, it’s just been great for the culture,” he said. “And it’s been entertaining. Even when things go wrong, it’s been entertaining. It’s just that good.”
Previous Verzuz sessions have featured artists like 112 and Jagged Edge, Erykah Badu and Jill Scott, Nelly and Ludacris, and Fabolous and Jadakiss.

John Legend Pushes Hulu to Green Light Black Wall Street Series Amid Black Lives Matter Protests

    Instagram

The TV project, focusing on the Tulsa, Oklahoma community of Greenwood that was destroyed by race riots in 1921, had been developed by the ‘All of Me’ hitmaker along with Tika Sumpter.
    Jun 25, 2020
AceShowbiz – Singer/actor John Legend is lobbying streaming service officials at Hulu to reconsider optioning his planned Black Wall Street drama series because the topic couldn’t be more timely.
The “All of Me” hitmaker, who has also found success as a film and TV producer, had been developing the project with “Ride Along” actress Tika Sumpter back in 2016, with the series focusing on the Tulsa, Oklahoma community of Greenwood, one of America’s most famous affluent black neighborhoods in the early 20th century.
The area, nicknamed Black Wall Street, was destroyed by race riots in 1921, when more than 300 African-American locals were killed by racist white citizens. The massacre is still considered one of the most devastating in U.S. history.
Hulu bosses previously passed on the idea, but following the ongoing Black Lives Matter protests and calls for Hollywood executives to shine a light on stories about black history and culture, Legend is hoping they will revisit the pitch – and give it the green light.
“We had originally planned to do it with Hulu and then it didn’t get picked up, and we literally just wrote an email to our execs (sic) at Hulu like, ‘Yo, you need to pick this up!,’ ” the star shared on New York radio show “The Breakfast Club”.
“This is very relevant right now, and it needs to be told.”
Noting that the subject matter was recently referenced in the opening episode of the hit HBO show “Watchmen”, and is set to be explored in two separate upcoming documentaries – one by basketball ace LeBron James, and another by journalist Dream Hampton, an executive producer behind the “Surviving R. Kelly” docuseries, Legend added, “It’s important that we do a scripted drama for it as well… It was written but didn’t get picked up, so we’re gonna try to resuscitate that.”
Asked why the show wasn’t given a pilot order at the time, Legend mused, “I don’t know if they got it. I don’t think they understood how important the story was to the black community and how much it’s been a part of our folklore that we talk about with each other, and how important it is for us…”.

“(Now) I think a lot more white people are aware of how significant that moment was to us, and so I think they’ll give it a second look.”

  • Artist of the Week: John Legend

The ‘All of Me’ hitmaker is keen to bring some light during the difficult time with his upcoming seventh studio album ‘Bigger Love’ led by an uplifting title track.
    Jun 15, 2020
AceShowbiz – John Legend is all about love. At a very difficult and challenging time like these where the world is hurting amid the global health crisis and worldwide protests against racial injustice, the “All of Me” hitmaker is determined to spread joy and kindness.
The first black man who became an EGOT for winning Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony is gearing up for the release of his seventh studio installment. Called “Bigger Love”, the album is two years in the making following his 2018 holiday set “A Legendary Christmas”.
The title track is an uplifting song that offered fans a break from the doom and gloom of 2020. “I just hope it gives people a moment to feel good,” he explained. “I know things are very difficult and a bit scary right now and music isn’t going to solve everyone’s problems, but hopefully it can give people a bit of a lift and bring some light to these dark times.”
The bouncy track was accompanied by a heartwarming music video that featured his wife Chrissy Teigen and their two adorable young kids Luna and Miles. The family footage was fused with homemade clips of fans around the globe dancing to the upbeat single.
The album is announced to be released June 19. It’s expected to make a notable debut if his chart history is any indication – he appeared on Billboard Hot 100 more than a dozen times with his love anthem “All of Me” dominating the chart in 2013 and all of his previous six albums became the top 20 on the R&B Albums chart.
For an artist who’s preparing for an album launch, it’s only natural for them to hype up the project. But promoting an album seems to take a backseat for John Legend. Instead, he’s actively using his platform to amplify black voices amid the Black Lives Matter movement that swept across the country and overseas.
He condemned the killing of George Floyd and supported campaign to “defund” police departments and give more to healthcare and education. He’s also seeking justice for the death of medical worker Breonna Taylor, calling for the arrest of the cops responsible for her death.

John Legend Gets Emotional After Helping 'The Voice' Contestant Clear Prince's Song

    NBC

The ‘Voice’ judge and the contestant under his wing Cammwess are overwhelmed with emotions after the former managed to clear ‘Purple Rain’ for the latter’s performance.
    May 20, 2020
AceShowbiz – “The Voice” contestant CammWess was left in tears on Monday night’s show, May 18, 2020 after his coach John Legend managed to clear Prince classic “Purple Rain” for him to perform on the programme.
While countless hit songs have been taken on by hopefuls on the U.S. TV talent show over the years, “Purple Rain” has never been one of them. But after John got involved, he managed to secure the tune for his act to belt out on Monday’s episode – a feat that was entirely appreciated by CammWess.
“Purple Rain has never been cleared for a performance on The Voice,” John explained as he introduced the performance. “I got an e-mail from one of the managers (asking), ‘John, will you vouch for this guy CammWess?’ I was like, ‘I will absolutely vouch for CammWess.’ ”
“It’s poetic, it’s really crazy,” CammWess replied. “I’m not gonna lie, I cried about it.”
And even his mentor John got a little choked up.
“I’m getting emotional thinking about it with you. I just want you to show out, make it like you singing at the Super Bowl in the rain,” he said referencing the late singer’s iconic 2007 Super Bowl performance. “That’s how you win The Voice.”
“The Voice” finale airs on Tuesday night, May 19, 2020 in the U.S.
