Golden Globes 2021: Daniel Kaluuya and John Boyega Are Early Winners

    HBO Max/Amazon Prime Video

Kaluuya nabs his first Golden Globe Award for best supporting actor in movie, Boyega is named best supporting actor in TV series, while Catherine O’Hara wins best actress in musical or comedy series.

    Mar 1, 2021
AceShowbiz – The red carpet is rolled out and the camera is on as the 78th annual Golden Globe Awards airs live on Sunday, February 28. After the fashion parade on the red carpet, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) has handed out the first trophies at the show.
Those who have received the honor included Daniel Kaluuya and John Boyega. The former won his first Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture for his role in “Judas and the Black Messiah”.
There was a technical glitch when he delivered his acceptance speech, as he was muted. “You did me dirty!” he said once the snafu was fixed. He then proceeded to thank his “leader and general,” director Shaka King, “for your inspiration.”
The Finn depicter in the “Star Wars” sequel trilogy was previously nominated at the 2018 Golden Globe Awards for best movie actor – musical or comedy for his performance in Jordan Peele’s critically-acclaimed directorial debut “Get Out”, but he ended up losing it to Taron Egerton (“Rocketman”).
Boyega also nabbed his first Golden Globe at the 2021 Golden Globe Awards for Best Supporting Actor – Television, thanks to his role as Leroy Logan on British anthology film series “Small Axe”. It also marked his first nomination at the HFPA-presented awards event.

“Do I just talk automatically?” Boyega asked as he accepted the award virtually. He rushed to deliver his speech as he was worried about his poor wifi connection.

Up next to take home a gong was Catherine O’Hara, who was hailed for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy for her role on “Schitt’s Creek”. She edged out the likes of Lily Collins, Kaley Cuoco, Elle Fanning and Jane Levy for the title.
It appeared that there was sound interruption as she stared to talk, but it turned out to be deliberate. Her husband was on his phone the whole time trying to get audience noises before trying to pretend play her off with music, a skit he pulled for the live broadcast.
The 2021 Golden Globe Awards is a bi-coastal ceremony, with Tina Fey co-hosting from the Rainbow Room in New York City, and Amy Poehler co-hosting from The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California.

Daniel Kaluuya Took Opera Singing Lessons to Prepare for His Role as Black Panthers Leader

    Warner Bros. Pictures

The ‘Get Out’ actor reveals he learned to sing opera to perfect his voice as late revolutionary activist Fred Hampton in the powerful movie ‘Judas and the Black Messiah’.

    Feb 14, 2021
AceShowbiz – “Get Out” star Daniel Kaluuya took opera singing lessons to help him prepare for speech scenes in his new Black Panthers movie “Judas and the Black Messiah”.
The Brit plays Panthers leader Fred Hampton in the powerful film and needed to prepare for a series of sequences in which he had to speak like a passionate revolutionary to crowds of followers without losing his voice, so to strengthen his vocal range he tried a little opera therapy.
“I had to condition my vocal chords and engage my diaphragm, because I’d be doing speeches for, like, 12 hours,” he tells “Good Morning America”. “Like any muscle, you need to get it strong in order for you to sustain that, in order not to do permanent damage to it.”
“I also had to study cadence, because Chairman Fred Hampton had a different cadence to when he spoke and when he did speeches and I wanted them to feel different but feel like the same person at the same time.”
Meanwhile, in a separate TV interview, the actor revealed he trained himself to become ambidextrous.

The star decided to learn a new skill during the first COVID lockdown in the U.K. last year (20), and impressed himself with his progress.
“I… taught myself to write with my left hand,” he explained on Britain’s “The Graham Norton Show”.
“On the first day it looked like I was writing while the house was being bombed, but to see the progression in six months was amazing.”
“It makes you realise that doing stuff you normally do and then doing it a different way challenges the way you do everything.”
However, not all of Kaluuya’s time was spent picking up useful skills – he also found himself ditching his usual diet as he began to indulge in all of his favourite foods while stuck at home.
“I let go and ate everything!” he laughed.

Daniel Kaluuya Admits to Having No Recollection Filming Key 'Judas and the Black Messiah' Scenes

    WENN/Avalon

During a post-premiere online discussion for the Sundance Film Festival, the actor portraying Fred Hampton in Shaka King’s new biopic talks about filming the civil rights icon’s famous speech.

    Feb 3, 2021
AceShowbiz – Actor Daniel Kaluuya was so absorbed in his role as civil rights icon Fred Hampton in “Judas and the Black Messiah”, he has no recollection of filming key scenes.
The “Get Out” star portrays the Black Panther Party Chairman in Shaka King’s new biopic, and he literally lost himself in the part in one particular segment, in which he delivered Hampton’s famous “I am a revolutionary” speech to a large church gathering of fellow activists.
“It was like the crowd was your scene partner. It was an amazing narrative what Chairman Fred represented. Being one with the people, speaking to the people, and it was like everyone just left, I can’t even remember the takes,” Kaluuya shared during a post-premiere online discussion for the Sundance Film Festival on Monday night (February 01).
“When I say I can’t remember what I did, I didn’t have an idea about how I was going to play something. I just knew I was a vessel. I just let go. Let go and let God (sic).”

Kaluuya even drew his energy from the crowd when he found himself struggling to complete the scene. “I would forget the lines and the crowd would pick me up,” he explained, according to the New York Post. “I was losing my voice and the crowd would pick me up… It was just a moment.”
The shoot took place in the same church Hampton visited back in 1969, and filmmaker King admits the authenticity gave everyone involved in the scene a boost.
“The crowd treated Daniel like Chairman Fred as soon as he walked into the church, and he very much fed off their energy,” King shared.
“Judah and the Black Messiah” opens in theaters and on U.S. streaming service HBO Max on 12 February.
