Lady Antebellum Named Latest Inductees of Grand Ole Opry

    Instagram/Hodges Usry

Charles Kelley, Hillary Scott, and Dave Haywood, who now go by the moniker Lady A, are going to be inducted into Grand Ole Opry in an upcoming television special.

    Jan 24, 2021
AceShowbiz – Lady A have become the Grand Ole Opry’s latest inductees.
The “Need You Now” hitmakers were invited to become members of the Opry during a taping for an upcoming TV special celebrating the Tennessee venue’s 95th anniversary.
Darius Rucker, who joined the Opry in 2012, officially asked the trio to join. The surprise invitation will air during “Grand Ole Opry: 95 Years of Country Music”, which premieres on 14 February (21).
The group, then known as Lady Antebellum, made their Grand Ole Opry debut in 2007. The bandmates decided to shorten their Civil War-associated name to Lady A in response to the national conversation about racism last summer (20).

Their decision angered blues singer Anita White, who also performed as Lady A, and led to a number of angry lawsuits.
In a recent interview, the trio explained why it took them so long to change their name. Charles Kelley, Hillary Scott, and Dave Haywood admitted Black Lives Matter movement was the catalyst behind their decision.
Charles said, “We came up with the name thinking about the antebellum home…I don’t know. It’s so naive now looking back, but I think, as we’ve grown up, we all have kids now.”
“I mean, why now? Well, we’re a lot older, we look at the world a lot different. We’re trying to leave the world a little bit better, too, for our kids and the next generation. And we want to be a part of change.”
Hillary concurred, “We realised, you know, over the summer I think not touring and watching just this movement happen that is so needed in this country and around the world, we started to see what our part was, what part of our first steps and making a difference could be. And so our name changing was the first step.”

Lady Antebellum Explain Why It Took Them So Long to Change Their Name

    Instagram

Charles Kelley, Hillary Scott, and Dave Haywood open up about their name change, admitting Black Lives Matter movement was the catalyst behind their decision.

    Dec 23, 2020
AceShowbiz – Lady A star Charles Kelley has revealed the country band changed their name to do their bit as part of the Black Lives Matter movement.
The group was formerly known as Lady Antebellum, but announced their decision to adopt a new moniker back in June (20) as they explained that they wanted to distance themselves from the term “Antebellum”, which has ties to the slave-owners of the Confederate South.
However, their decision angered blues singer Anita White, who performed as Lady A, and led to a number of angry lawsuits.

Appearing on “The Tamron Hall Show” on Monday (21Dec20), Charles and bandmates Hillary Scott and Dave Haywood opened up about why they’d waited so long to change their name as Charles explained it was the Black Lives Matter movement gaining traction earlier this year that prompted them to take the plunge.
“I think the word to me that resonates the most this year has been ‘blind spot.’ And I think I am so guilty of…I didn’t think about it,” he mused. “You know, we came up with the name thinking about the antebellum home…I don’t know. It’s so naive now looking back, but I think, as we’ve grown up, we all have kids now.”

    Nov 12, 2020
AceShowbiz – Lady A’s (previously Lady Antebellum) has been forced to drop out of the 2020 CMA Awards at last minute because of coronavirus. Close to one hour before the event was about to kick off, the country music group announced they would be pulling out of the live show after a family member tested positive for COVID-19.

Lady A added, “We’re bummed that we won’t be able to perform with Darius Rucker and Thomas Rhett, but luckily Charles [Kelley] already taped his performance with Carly Pearce so you will still be seeing him take the stage!” The concluded, “We’ll be cheering on our friends at home like the rest of y’all! Stay safe out there.”

  • Lady Antebellum Sued by Original Lady A Amid Row Over Name Change

    WENN/Instagram

Charles Kelley, Dave Haywood, and Hillary Scott have been slapped with a lawsuit by blues singer Anita White for trademark infringement amid debacle over their new moniker.
    Sep 17, 2020
AceShowbiz – Blues singer Anita White is suing country band Lady Antebellum for trademark infringement after they changed their name.
The “Need You Now” hitmakers decided to shorten the group name to Lady A earlier this summer (20), after acknowledging the ‘Antebellum’ of their former moniker was too closely linked to Southern U.S. culture, when slavery was legal.
However, Washington-based musician White was left unimpressed with the switch as she has been performing as Lady A for decades, and the dispute then turned nasty, with bandmates Charles Kelley, Dave Haywood, and Hillary Scott taking the 62 year old to court for her “attempt to enforce purported trademarks rights.”
White has now hit back with a lawsuit of her own, with the legal papers stating, “Lady Antebellum’s decision to replace the name Lady Antebellum with Lady A was undertaken with wilful disregard of Ms. White’s rights in her Lady A trademark, which she has used for nearly thirty years.”
Adding that the trio has caused “tortious injury” to White with their name change, the documents continued to explain that while she and Lady A held a video conference to try and reach an agreement about the name, they were “unable to reach a resolution.”
Representatives for Lady A have yet to respond to the latest lawsuit.

  • Original Lady A Refuses to Be 'Token Person' to Make Lady Antebellum 'Look Woke'

    Instagram/WENN

The blues singer Anita White says sometimes all black people have is their name as she is fighting Charles Kelley, Dave Haywood, and Hillary Scott in moniker dispute.
    Jul 17, 2020
AceShowbiz – Blues singer Anita White, known professionally as Lady A, is refusing to give up her name without a fight.
The band formerly known as Lady Antebellum recently announced plans to adopt the moniker, acknowledging that the word ‘Antebellum’ has close ties with slavery, leading to objection from White, who has performed as Lady A for years.
While they initially appeared to reach a mutual agreement, things turned nasty last week (ends12Jul20) when bandmates Charles Kelley, Dave Haywood, and Hillary Scott accused White of trying to cash in on the situation by demanding $10 million (£8 million) to stop performing as Lady A and filed a lawsuit against her.
Speaking with ABC News Prime, White insisted she’s, “built this name for decades before they were born, and I’ve been building it,” as she compared the “grind” of independent musicians to the struggles Black, Indigenous people of colour (BIPOC) face.
“Sometimes all we have is our name,” she stated. “We don’t want to have that taken from us. Our culture gets taken, our music gets taken. This is more important for those that come behind me.”
The musician went on to say she felt “disregarded” and ignored when she asked the country act’s lawyers what exactly it meant to co-exist on three separate occasions, insisting, “I’ve put out five CDs under Lady A. They have not put one CD under Lady A. That’s their nickname. This is my professional name.”
Despite admitting she was initially excited about the prospect of working with the “Need You Now” trio, she concluded that she didn’t believe their intentions were sincere and conceded she wasn’t willing to check the box to be the “token person so that you look woke.”
