Noel Clarke Dedicates BAFTA Award to 'Underrepresented' as Early Winners Are Announced

    WENN

The BAFTA Film Awards kicks off Saturday night with the early winners led by the drama movie ‘Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom’ starring Viola Davis and late Chadwick Boseman.

    Apr 11, 2021

    AceShowbiz –
Actor/director Noel Clarke dedicated his honorary Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema BAFTA award to the “underrepresented” in a passionate and moving speech on Saturday night (10Apr21).

The brains behind the “Hood” franchise and the hit British TV series “Bulletproof” was the only winner to pick up the trophy in person during the Opening Night segment of the 2021 BAFTAs, which continues on Sunday.

As he took to the stage, he referenced the now infamous moment he “bounced off my chair and popped my collar” as he was named winner of the BAFTA Rising Star award back in 2009.

“For years I never really understood why I did that. I couldn’t articulate it,” he explained. “People have told me how arrogant it was, and that I shouldn’t have done it, and I’ve always said to myself, ‘If I ever got back on this stage again, I’d apologise for it’. I’m not going to do that. Recently I realised why I did it, I felt vindicated – I won something that at the time, someone like me was never supposed to. Something I’d been told that I couldn’t.”

“My journey in this business has been a battle at time, and as I stand here right now I know that a lot of the work I’ve done is not BAFTA worthy. I think this is about the journey. It is about the times maybe it was worthy and wasn’t recognised. I stand on the shoulders of giants – I’m not here without the people before me. I hope people see that I’ve tried to illicit change in the industry.”

“So this is for the underrepresented. Anyone who sits at home believing that they can achieve more. This is particularly for my young black boys and girls out there who never believed that this could happen to them. I’m just, I’m so, so thankful for this.”

Clarke concluded his speech by telling viewers that, while he ended his 2009 speech with the words “Yes we can,” the same is true today – although it’s slightly “tougher.”

“So I wanted to end this one a little bit different,” he explained. “Sometimes you’ll feel like it’s not achievable. It is. Sometimes you’ll feel like you’re not good enough. You are. Sometimes you’ll feel like you don’t deserve it. You do.”

BBC Radio 1 DJ Clara Amfo presented the awards on Saturday evening from London’s Royal Albert Hall, with a panel of guests including film critic Rhianna Dhillon and actress and former BAFTA nominee, Joanna Scanlan.

After introducing the evening’s entertainment, Clara’s tone changed as she paid a sombre tribute to Prince Philip – BAFTA’s first-ever President back in 1959 – who passed away on Friday (09Apr21), aged 99.

“The Duke of Edinburgh occupies a very special place in BAFTA film history and he will be missed,” she said.

Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge, is the current president and had been due to take part in a virtual conversation with costume designer Jenny Beavan and Make Up & Hair designer Sharon Martin, but pulled out following his grandfather’s death.

BAFTA-nominated actor Leslie Odom Jr. made an appearance on Saturday’s Opening Night, to sing “Speak Now” from his film “One Night in Miami…”, while Hussain Manawer performed spoken word piece “Moving Image”, which included the names of all 58 BAFTA nominated movies, from Blenheim Palace.

While Clarke was the only person to accept his prize in person, a total of eight other awards were announced during the evening – in categories including Sound, Production Design and Special Visual Effects.

The remainder of the winners will be announced on Sunday night (11Apr21).

The eight award winners announced on Saturday night are as follows:

Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema Award: Noel Clarke
    Casting: “Rocks” – Lucy Pardee
Costume Design: “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” – Ann Roth
Make Up & Hair: “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” – Matiki Anoff, Larry M. Cherry, Sergio Lopez-Rivera, Mia Neal

    Apr 5, 2021

    AceShowbiz –
Chadwick Boseman’s talent has once again been recognized posthumously. The late actor nabbed Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role at the 27th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards through his portrayal of trumpeter Levee Green in “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”.

As with his other posthumous awards this year, his wife Simone Ledward Boseman, accepted the honor on his behalf. “Thank you, God. Thank you Leroy and Carolyn Boseman,” she said before thanking his co-stars and “Ma Rainey” filmmakers. “If you see the world unbalanced, be a crusader that pushes heavily on the seesaw of the mind. That’s a quote by Chadwick Boseman. Thank you Screen Actors. Thank you, Chad.”

The Netflix movie was a big winner at the SAG Awards with two prizes in total, including Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role for Viola Davis. Stunning in a neon green dress, she kept her co-star Boseman close to her heart as she delivered her speech from home.

The 55-year-old actress sweetly kissed her husband Julius Tennon, who also dressed up in a suit and silver tie, before thanking the writer, August Wilson, and the “beautiful Chadwick Boseman.” She said, “Thank you, August for leaving a legacy to actors of color that we can relish for the rest of our life.”

Boseman was also nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role for his role as Norman Earl Holloway in “Da 5 Bloods”, but lost it to Daniel Kaluuya. The “Judas and the Black Messiah” star dedicated the award to the late “Black Panther” star as well as Fred Hampton, the real-life Black Panther Illinois chairman he portrayed in the movie, saying, “This one’s for Chadwick Boseman and this one’s for Fred Hampton.”

The Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role award went to Yuh-Jung Youn for her role in Korean-American film “Minari”. “The Trial of the Chicago 7” also bagged one award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, while “Wonder Woman 1984” won for the best stunt ensemble.

The winners of the 2021 SAG Awards, which were chosen by fellow actors in the SAG-AFTRA, were announced on Easter Sunday, April 4. The event also handed out awards for outstanding performance by actors in TV.

Viola Davis Gets Real About How She Views Her 'Ma Rainey's Black Bottom' Character

    Netflix

In the Denzel Washington-produced drama movie, the actress tackles the role of a fiery black musician who is engaged in a battle of wills over control of her music in 1920s Chicago.

AceShowbiz – Viola Davis doesn’t view her character in “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” as either a hero or villain.
The 55-year-old actress stars in the titular role of the drama movie as a fiery black musician who is engaged in a battle of wills over control of her music in 1920s Chicago but she believes it is down to the audience to judge if she is a protagonist or antagonist.
Viola said: “I don’t view her as a protagonist or antagonist, because I can’t. An actor doesn’t do that.”
“It’s like, you’ve got to portray the character exactly who they are. Whether they’re a protagonist or an antagonist, that’s for the audience, that’s a judgement.”

The Oscar-winning star explained how she played the character in the Netflix movie as a woman who wasn’t valued in the film’s setting but as understanding her worth as a musician known as the Mother of the Blues.
Viola told CinemaBlend.com: “I portrayed her as a woman who literally is born in the world that doesn’t value her at all – that doesn’t even recognise her as a human being, but she is a person who understands her worth.”
“So, therefore, she’s a woman who absolutely has busted a hole through 1927. She is a liberated woman.”
The “Widows” star continued: “So I just saw her as a woman who knew her worth and wasn’t going to concede. It wasn’t up for discussion.”
“I know that (as Ma) I’m great at what I do, I know it’s making you money, I should be called the Mother of the Blues. I’m influencing all these other singers, so you treat me like I deserve to be treated. And that’s it. That’s how I saw her.”
