Piers Morgan's Comment About Meghan's Suicidal Thoughts Becomes Most Complained TV Moment

    WENN

The controversial comment made by the former ‘Good Morning Britain’ co-host about Meghan Markle’s mental health struggles breaks complaint record in British TV history.

    Mar 18, 2021

    AceShowbiz –
Piers Morgan’s TV attack on the Duke & Duchess of Sussex has become the most complained about moment in British television history.

Ofcom bosses have revealed they received over 57,100 complaints about Morgan’s remarks on “Good Morning Britain” after the outspoken newsman upset many viewers by questioning the Duchess’ claims she felt suicidal when the British media turned on her – something she discussed during a tell-all TV interview with Oprah Winfrey, which aired last week (ends12Mar21).

Meghan, Duchess of Sussex was among those who filed an official complaint over Piers’ controversial remarks.

In the TV sit down, Meghan recalled wanting to end her own life after facing relentless, and often racist, attacks in the U.K. press as she struggled to adjust to life as a royal, but claimed palace officials denied her request to seek treatment.

Morgan refused to apologise for his remarks and, after clashing with a colleague on-air, he subsequently quit his job at “Good Morning Britain”.

It has since emerged that a representative for Meghan has also written to chiefs at regulatory group Ofcom about the situation, expressing concerns about Morgan’s attitude towards mental health in general, and how it could impact others needing help.

Morgan cited freedom of speech as he defended himself following his TV exit, “I said I didn’t believe Meghan Markle in her Oprah interview. I’ve had time to reflect on this opinion, and I still don’t. Freedom of speech is a hill I’m happy to die on. Thanks for all the love, and hate. I’m off to spend more time with my opinions.”

The Duchess of Sussex lodges an official complaint over Morgan’s controversial comments to Ofcom while also writing a letter to the ‘Good Morning Britain’ bosses.

    Mar 14, 2021
AceShowbiz – Meghan, Duchess of Sussex has taken her dispute with former “Good Morning Britain” co-host Piers Morgan to British broadcasting regulators, filing an official complaint over his controversial remarks about her suicidal thoughts.
The former actress, who is married to Prince Harry, was blasted by Morgan during Monday’s (08Mar21) episode of the breakfast show, the morning after the couple’s revealing tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey had aired in the U.S., insisting he “didn’t believe a word” she said about the royal family.
In the TV sit down, Meghan recalled wanting to end her own life while she was pregnant with her son Archie after facing relentless, and often racist, attacks in the U.K. press as she struggled to adjust to life as a royal, but claimed palace officials denied her request to seek treatment.

Morgan’s dismissal of her mental health struggles prompted Meghan to lodge a formal complaint with network bosses at ITV, the home of “Good Morning Britain”. The newsman refused to apologise for his remarks on Tuesday and, after clashing with a colleague on air, he subsequently quit his job.
Now it’s emerged that a representative for Meghan has also written to chiefs at regulatory group Ofcom about the situation, expressing concerns about Morgan’s attitude towards mental health in general, and how it could impact others needing help but afraid to speak out.
“We can confirm receipt of a standards complaint made on behalf of the Duchess of Sussex,” a spokesman for Ofcom told the Daily Mail.
Morgan’s comments had sparked widespread criticism and led to more 41,000 complaints to Ofcom.

Meghan Markle Lodges Complaint to TV Bosses Over Piers Morgan's Comments

    WENN

The Duchess of Sussex has filed a formal complaint to ITV after the former host made disparaging comments following her suicide claims on Oprah Winfrey interview.

    Mar 11, 2021
AceShowbiz – Meghan, Duchess of Sussex has filed a formal complaint to ITV over former “Good Morning Britain” presenter Piers Morgan’s inflammatory comments about her suicide revelations.
A complaint was lodged on behalf of the royal after Monday’s (8Mar21) episode of “Good Morning Britain”, during which Morgan blasted Meghan and Prince Harry over revelations that emerged from their explosive interview with Oprah Winfrey.
Morgan said he didn’t believe the Duchess’ claims she had felt suicidal and had reached out for support from Buckingham Palace, who denied her help, comments that sparked widespread criticism, including from a mental health charity that works with ITV who broadcast the CBS special in the U.K., and led to more 41,000 complaints to U.K. broadcasting regulator Ofcom.
On Wednesday ITV News reported Meghan wrote to CEO Carolyn McCall, raising concerns over how Morgan’s words would affect the mental health dialogue in the U.K. and how it may impact someone contemplating suicide.

Morgan, who later rowed with his colleague, “GMB” weatherman Alex Beresford, about his behaviour towards Meghan, which resulted in him walking off air, later quit his role on the TV show.
According to reports, he refused to make an on-air apology for his comments about Meghan.
Following his exit from the show, he remained unrepentant, tweeting, “On Monday, I said I didn’t believe Meghan Markle in her Oprah interview. I’ve had time to reflect on this opinion, and I still don’t. Freedom of speech is a hill I’m happy to die on. Thanks for all the love, and hate. I’m off to spend more time with my opinions.”
Both ITV and Prince Harry and Meghan’s Archewell foundation declined to comment on the complaint, although neither denied that it was made.

Piers Morgan Happy to 'Fall on His Sword' for 'Honest' Opinion About Meghan Markle

    WENN

The former ‘Good Morning Britain’ presenter has no regret for walking away from the British morning show, citing ‘freedom of speech’ for his ‘honestly held opinion’ about the Duchess of Sussex.

    Mar 11, 2021
AceShowbiz – Piers Morgan has no regrets about the way he dealt with the Duchess Of Sussex’s Oprah Winfrey interview on “Good Morning Britain”, insisting that he is proud to have “fallen on his sword” for “freedom of speech.”
The anchor decided to step down from his position on the U.K. TV show after a row with weatherman Alex Beresford about his behaviour towards Meghan and her and Harry’s interview with Oprah, following which Morgan had said he didn’t believe the duchess’ comments that she was suicidal during her time in the royal family.
Following his shock exit from the show, he tweeted on Wednesday morning (10Mar21), “On Monday, I said I didn’t believe Meghan Markle in her Oprah interview. I’ve had time to reflect on this opinion, and I still don’t. Freedom of speech is a hill I’m happy to die on. Thanks for all the love, and hate. I’m off to spend more time with my opinions.”
He elaborated further as he spoke to journalists outside his London home, telling the BBC, “I had a good chat with ITV and we agreed to disagree. I believe in freedom of speech, I believe in the right to be allowed to have an opinion. If people want to believe Meghan Markle, that’s entirely their right.”

“I don’t believe almost anything that comes out of her mouth and I think the damage she’s done to the British monarchy and to the Queen at a time when Prince Philip is lying in hospital is enormous and frankly contemptible.”
“If I have to fall on my sword for expressing an honestly held opinion about Meghan Markle and that diatribe of bilge that she came out with in that interview, so be it.”
Morgan also said that he has no intention of resting on his laurels, adding, “I think it’s fair to say, although the woke crowd will think that they’ve cancelled me, I think they will be rather disappointed when I re-emerge.”
Ranvir Singh stood in for Morgan on Wednesday’s episode of “Good Morning Britain”, with his co-host Susanna Reid insisting “shows go on” after people leave.

    WENN/Danny Martindale

A source also shares that the British royals are ‘furious’ about what might be revealed in Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s upcoming tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey.

    Mar 5, 2021
AceShowbiz – It is just days before “Oprah with Meghan and Harry: A CBS Primetime Special” airs on March 7. According to a new report, Prince William and Queen Elizabeth II are not entirely happy with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s tell-all interview as they’re worried that it will badly affect their image.
“They feel that by sharing [Harry and Meghan’s] side of the story, the entire royal family will be painted in an unfair way,” an insider claims to Us Weekly. The source also adds that the royals are “furious” about what might be revealed in the interview.
Meghan and Harry indeed seemingly will drop some bombshell revelation in the sit-down with Oprah Winfrey for the CBS special. A new trailer saw the Duchess of Sussex accusing the Palace of “perpetuating falsehoods” about her and her husband.

“I don’t know how they could expect that after all of this time, we would still just be silent if there is an active role that the firm is playing in perpetuating falsehoods about us,” the former “Suits” star said. “And if that comes with risk of losing things – I mean, there’s a lot that’s been lost already.”
Harry also got candid in a previous promo as Oprah teased about “some pretty shocking things.” The British prince later talked about his concern when it came to his wife’s safety. “My biggest concern was history repeating itself. I’m really relieved and happy to be sitting here, talking to you with my wife by my side because I can’t begin to imagine what it must have been for her going through this process by herself all these years ago,” he told the host.
“Oprah with Meghan and Harry” is set to feature Oprah speaking with “Meghan, The Duchess of Sussex, in a wide-ranging interview, covering everything from stepping into life as a Royal, marriage, motherhood, philanthropic work to how she is handling life under intense public pressure.” Prince Harry will join them later as they speak about their move to the United States and their future hopes and dreams for their expanding family.

The wife of Prince Harry says, “I don’t know how they could expect that after all of this time, we would still just be silent if there is an active role that the firm is playing in perpetuating falsehoods about us. The new promo arrives after Meghan was accused of bullying members of staff at Kensington Palace. According a formal complaint made by Jason Knauf, the former communications secretary for Prince Harry and his wife Meghan, Meghan’s rude behaviour made two members of staff out of the household and undermined the confidence of a third. The “Suits” alum were also accused of leaving staff members in tears at times.
In response to the accusations, a spokesperson for Meghan said in a statement, “The Duchess is saddened by this latest attack on her character particularly as someone who has been the target of bullying herself and is deeply committed to supporting those who have experienced pain and trauma.”
“She is determined to continue her work building compassion around the world and will keep striving to set an example for doing what is right and doing what is good,” the statement continued.
Meanwhile, officials at Queen Elizabeth II’s royal residence, Buckingham Palace, shared that they would “are clearly very concerned about allegations” and “will look into the circumstances outlined in the article.”
“Members of staff involved at the time, including those who have left the Household, will be invited to participate to see if lessons can be learned. The Royal Household has had a Dignity at Work policy in place for a number of years and does not and will not tolerate bullying or harassment in the workplace,” they stated.

ITV Wins U.K. Bidding War on Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's Interview With Oprah Winfrey

    CBS

The highly-anticipated television sit-down between the Duke and pregnant Duchess of Sussex and the former daytime show host is set to air for U.K. audience on ITV.

    Mar 4, 2021
AceShowbiz – ITV will broadcast Oprah Winfrey’s interview with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
The 67-year-old American chat show legend has filmed the couple’s first major interview since stepping away from the British royal family, and now the U.K. network has confirmed it will air on March 8 at 9pm, as well as being made available on the ITV Hub.
Kevin Lygo – ITV’s Managing Director Media and Entertainment – commented, “This interview is already a national talking point and ITV is pleased to be able to offer U.K. audiences the opportunity to see it.”
The TV event sees Winfrey speaking to Meghan – who is pregnant with her second child, a sibling for 21-month-old Archie – in a “wide-ranging interview” dealing with marriage, motherhood, life as a royal, her philanthropic work and more.
A previous statement from CBS confirming the news of the interview read, “Winfrey will speak with Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, in a wide-ranging interview, covering everything from stepping into life as a Royal, marriage, motherhood, philanthropic work to how she is handling life under intense public pressure.”

“Later, the two are joined by Prince Harry as they speak about their move to the United States and their future hopes and dreams for their expanding family.”
In a previous teaser clip for the interview, Harry – who, along with his wife, stepped back from royal life and moved to America a year ago – revealed he was worried about “history repeating itself.”
The 36-year-old prince seemingly referenced his late mother Princess Diana – who died in a Paris car crash in 1997 at the age of 36 – as he discussed how thankful he is to have Meghan, known as Meghan Markle before she married Harry, by his side during some “unbelievably tough” times and admitted he “can’t begin to imagine” how difficult things were for his parent, who gave up the Her Royal Highness title after divorcing his father Prince Charles in 1996.
He said, “My biggest concern was history repeating itself.”
“For me, I’m just really relieved and happy to be sitting here, talking to you with my wife by my side.”

Royal Expert Dubs Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's Oprah Interview 'Ridiculous'

    CBS

Royal biographer Robert Jobson claims in a new interview that the trailers for ‘Oprah with Meghan and Harry: A CBS Primetime Special’ are filled with ‘over the top, melodramatic nonsense.’

    Mar 2, 2021
AceShowbiz – “Oprah with Meghan and Harry: A CBS Primetime Special” has yet to air, but Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have already received backlash following the release of its promos. In a new interview, royal biographer Robert Jobson claimed that it was “nonsense.”
Speaking with Daily Mail on Monday, March 1, Jobson added that the promos were filled with “over the top, melodramatic nonsense.” He continued, “The queen and the royal family are not the Corleone family of Windsor.”
“There are no hitmen or heavies going around silencing people. Meghan, whilst a working royal, was always protected by a team of Scotland Yard officers. Thankfully, she was never in danger physically and Harry knows that,” he went on to say.
In one of the trailers, host Oprah Winfrey could be seen asking the Duchess of Sussex, “Were you silent or were you silenced?” In response to that, Jobson said, “Talk of being ‘silenced’ is just ridiculous. It suits a narrative, I suppose, but at what cost to the queen, Prince Philip and the royal family and our reputation as a country?”

In the explosive trailers, Prince Harry also voiced concern about whether the tragedy, which killed his mother Princess Diana, would happen once again to his wife. “I’m just really relieved and happy to be sitting here talking to you with my wife by my side because I can’t begin to imagine what it must have been like for her going through this process by herself all those years ago,” the 36-year-old shared.
The Duke of Sussex then admitted that “it’s been unbelievably tough for the two of us. But at least we have each other.”
According to CBS, “Oprah with Meghan and Harry” features Oprah speaking with “Meghan, The Duchess of Sussex, in a wide-ranging interview, covering everything from stepping into life as a Royal, marriage, motherhood, philanthropic work to how she is handling life under intense public pressure.”
The pair will later be joined by Prince Harry as they speak about their move to the United States and their future hopes and dreams for their expanding family.
“Oprah with Meghan and Harry” is set to air on CBS on Sunday, March 7 at 8 P.M. PT/ET and 7 P.M. CT.
