Sacha Baron Cohen Is Special Honoree at Santa Barbara Film Festival

    WENN

The ‘Borat’ actor is set to receive Outstanding Performer of the Year Award, thanks to his onscreen performances in ‘The Trial of the Chicago 7’ and ‘Borat Subsequent Moviefilm’.

    Jan 29, 2021
AceShowbiz – Sacha Baron Cohen is set to receive the Outstanding Performer of the Year Award at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival (SBIFF).
The actor will be recognised for his portrayal of activist Abbie Hoffman in Netflix drama “The Trial of the Chicago 7” and his “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” sequel, in which he reprised his titular role as the fictitious Kazakhstani journalist, at the annual awards ceremony on 7 April (21).
SBIFF’s executive director Roger Durling hailed the movie star for being “able to capture our interest, our imagination as well as the zeitgeist,” adding that “his work in both films is timely, urgent and nuanced.”

“It’s an honour to be recognised and to stand in the company of such incredible past recipients,” Sacha said in a statement. “I’m very grateful to Roger, SBIFF and everyone who believes that cinema, whether drama or satire, can shine a light on injustice and bigotry and even provide a laugh or two along the way.”
Previous recipients of the coveted title include the likes of Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling, Saoirse Ronan, Steve Carell, Cate Blanchett, and Dame Helen Mirren.
Last year, Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson were honoured with the accolade for “Marriage Story”.
Despite the success of the second “Borat” movie, Sacha Baron Cohen has no plan to make a third one. “I brought Borat out because of (Donald) Trump,” the actor said. “There was a purpose to this movie, and I don’t really see the purpose to doing it again. So yeah, he’s locked away in the cupboard.”

Sacha Baron Cohen Spills How Clueless Cops Allowed Him to Pull Off Best 'Borat' Sequel Stunt

    Amazon Studios

In a new interview with Ben Affleck, the comedian goes into details about the time officials came perilously close to blowing his cover as Donald Trump during ‘Borat Subsequent Moviefilm’ shooting.

    Jan 25, 2021
AceShowbiz – Sacha Baron Cohen owes hapless U.S. police and security officers a huge debt of gratitude for helping him pull off one of the best stunts in “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm”.
The Brit reprised his role as Kazakh newsman Borat in the 2020 follow up to the 2006 comedy hit and admits law enforcement officials came perilously close to blowing his cover when he dressed up as former American leader Donald Trump for one of the film’s pivotal moments.
In a new Variety Actors on Actors interview with Ben Affleck, Cohen reveals he was being “wanded down” by security agents when they heard a “Beep”.
“The guy says, ‘What is that?’ And I go, ‘It’s my pacemaker’,” the funnyman says. “I’ve got a field producer next to me who’s completely c**pping himself. (Because) we’re going to get busted.”
And then the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officer spotted a wire, which was part of a hidden device allowing Cohen to communicate with his producers.
“He goes, ‘What is that?’ And I didn’t know what to say,” explains Cohen. “I was completely stumped. He goes, ‘Oh, that’s the wire leading to your pacemaker, right?’ I was like, ‘Obviously’. He goes, ‘All right, come through.’ ”

Once inside the event – a Conservative Political Action Conference – Cohen pulled off his funny scene and was quickly apprehended by a bunch of Secret Service officers, demanding to know his true identity.
And again, he was saved by an officer, who wasn’t quite on top of his game.
“One of the cops goes, ‘Give me your ID….’,” he adds. “I go, ‘Listen, I’d like to, but my ID is in my shoe. Do you want me to take off my shoe?’ ”
Feeling sure he was busted and the whole premise of the movie was ruined, Cohen held his breath, before experiencing one more giant stroke of good fortune.
“And the guy goes, ‘No, forget it’,” he smiles.

Sacha Baron Cohen Has No Plan to Make Third 'Borat' Movie

    Instagram

The ‘Ali G Indahouse’ actor has ruled out any possibility of bringing back his controversial character for a third movie after the sequel ‘Borat Subsequent Moviefilm.’

    Jan 7, 2021
AceShowbiz – Sacha Baron Cohen has retired his controversial “Borat” character because he can’t imagine bringing the oddball Kazakh journalist back after two films.
Cohen released “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” – his follow-up to the 2006 mockumentary “Borat”, in October (20) via Amazon Prime Video, and in a new interview with Variety, the Brit has confirmed he can’t foresee a further movie for the character.
“I brought Borat out because of (President Donald) Trump,” he said. “There was a purpose to this movie, and I don’t really see the purpose to doing it again. So yeah, he’s locked away in the cupboard.”
And Cohen admits there were times while he was making the Borat sequel, during which he staged a series of questionable stunts – including dressing up as Trump for a political event – that made him wonder if he was “mad.”

      See also…

“There were moments in making this movie where I thought, ‘Why the hell am I doing this?’ ” he explained. “This is illogical. You think, ‘Am I mad? Have I got something deeply wrong with me?’ ”
Earlier this week (beg04Jan21), Maria Bakalova, who played Borat’s daughter Tutar in the sequel, said she felt it was her “duty” to see through a controversial interview scene with Trump’s lawyer Rudy Giuliani even though it was terribly uncomfortable.
Bakalova posed as a journalist for the interview with the former New York Mayor and, after the chat, the pair retreated to a hotel room before Cohen – as Borat – burst in.
“I was afraid because Rudy is a lawyer, and he is the president’s lawyer,” she told the Los Angeles Times. “I am not an American and don’t know about American politics, but I knew that as an actor, it was my duty to do this scene to save the movie. I also knew that I wasn’t alone in the room because Sacha was hiding there. I knew that if something happened, I could make my exit.”

Sacha Baron Cohen Donates $100K to Pranked 'Borat' Babysitter Who's Paid Only $3,600 for the Movie

    Amazon Prime/GoFundMe

The ‘Borat’ actor makes a $100,000 donation to Jeanise Jones after it was revealed she ‘wasn’t paid much money’ for the new flick ‘Subsequent Moviefilm’.

    Oct 31, 2020
AceShowbiz – Sacha Baron Cohen has pledged $100,000 (£77,500) to “babysitter” Jeanise Jones’ Oklahoma community, after she made a big impact with her scene-stealing appearance in “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm”.
Jones was one of the sequel’s breakout stars and quickly became a fan favourite after appearing as a “babysitter” hired to watch Borat’s 15-year-old daughter – played by the 24-year-old Bulgarian actress Maria Bakalova.
While filming, Jones was reportedly told she would be appearing in a documentary about child brides and that the film would largely only be seen overseas.
Pastor Derrick Scobey, of Jones’ Ebenezer Baptist Church, previously set up a GoFundMe crowdfunding page in her honour, as she was told she’d be playing a ” ‘Black Grandmother’ in a ‘documentary.’ ”
“Jeanise emerged as that person and she was completely unaware that this was a comedy, and all of this was made up,” reads a statement on the page. “The joke is on us/Jeanise and that’s no problem.”

It adds that Jones “wasn’t paid much money” for the film and she was worried about the fate of Bakalova’s Tutar for the duration of filming.
When WENN went to press, the fundraiser had already amassed over $140,000 (£108,500) and, outside of the online platform, Cohen also donated $100,000 in Jones’ honour.
Scobey told People, “I was blown away but not surprised because I was told about what type of heart this man has. Maybe it’s a little risque, some of the things in the movie, but he has a good heart.”
“While all these people around the world are loving how she’s the moral compass of the movie, she’s sitting here serving people in the dark and in the cold,” he added of Jones. “This is who we are. This is what we do for our community, and we love our community.”
“Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” is currently screening on Amazon Prime Video.

  • 'Borat' Sequel Dodges Lawsuit Filed by Holocaust Survivor's Family

    Amazon Studios

After a judge in Georgia rejected the legal action, a lawyer for Amazon’s streaming service declares, ‘Sacha Baron Cohen was deeply grateful for the opportunity to work with Judith Dim Evans.’

    Oct 27, 2020
AceShowbiz – A lawsuit filed by the estate of holocaust survivor Judith Dim Evans against “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” has been dismissed.
Evans, who died this summer, was approached to talk about the Holocaust for what she thought was a serious documentary, with her conversation filmed in a synagogue in Georgia on January 29. However, she later discovered it was to be used in Sacha Baron Cohen’s sequel, “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm: Delivery of Prodigious Bribe to American Regime for Make Benefit Once Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan”.
“Upon learning after giving the interview that the movie was actually a comedy intended to mock the Holocaust and Jewish culture, Ms. Evans was horrified and upset,” the lawsuit filed against Amazon Prime Video and Oak Springs Productions read.

After the lawsuit was filed in Georgia by Dim Evans’ daughter Michelle Dim St. Pierre, a judge in the state rejected it. St. Pierre then withdrew the lawsuit.
Russell Smith, the lawyer for Amazon’s streaming service, said in a statement following the rejection, “The lawsuit was dismissed, unconditionally. The lawsuit is over. Sacha Baron Cohen was deeply grateful for the opportunity to work with Judith Dim Evans, whose compassion and courage as a Holocaust survivor has touched the hearts of millions of people who have seen the film.”
“Judith’s life is a powerful rebuke to those who deny the Holocaust, and with this film and his activism, Sacha Baron Cohen will continue his advocacy to combat Holocaust denial around the world.”
“Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” was released on October 23 on Prime Video. It arrived more than a decade after the first movie, which debuted in 2006.

  • Sacha Baron Cohen Throws Shade at Trump's Secret Service Following Mike Pence Prank

    WENN

The ‘Borat’ actor recalls his stunt at the Republican event dressing up President Donald Trump and how the secret service never asked for his ID before they let him go.

    Oct 24, 2020
AceShowbiz – Actor Sacha Baron Cohen’s prank on U.S. Vice President Mike Pence for his new “Borat” movie was almost derailed by security officials after his fat suit set off the metal detector.
The British funnyman reprises his Kazakh newsman character for “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm”, in which he dresses up in a padded suit, wig, and heavy makeup to impersonate President Donald Trump at the Conservative Political Action Conference in Maryland in February (20), when he interrupted Pence’s speech at the political event.
He was promptly escorted out by security guards, but Cohen admits he almost didn’t make it into the venue – until a lie about a pacemaker saved the stunt.
Recalling the lengths he had to go to for the shoot, he told U.S. show “Good Morning America”, “That was pretty difficult because I woke up at two o’clock in the morning and I had a world-class prosthetics team turn my face into the president. That took about six hours and I was wearing a fat suit…”
“Obviously I had to get through a number of layers of security, including TSA (Transportation Security Administration) security… I knew the moment they touched the fat suit they would not allow me in, and one of them wanded me (with a metal detector) and there was a beep.”

      See also…

“They said, ‘What is that?’ I said, ‘It’s a pacemaker,’ and then they carried on with the wand, and then suddenly the lower bit of the belly, it beeped again, and they said, ‘What is that? Why is it beeping?’ ”
“I had no answer and the TSA officer said, ‘Hold on, it’s the wire for the pacemaker, right?’ I was like, ‘Yeah…’ and he goes, ‘OK, go through!’ ”
It wasn’t the only hurdle Cohen had to overcome – once inside, he had to hide out in the men’s toilets and wait for Pence to take the stage.
“I essentially hid in the bathroom at CPAC for five hours… then eventually we did the scene, and got escorted out by about 15 security staff, including Secret Service and local police,” he shared.
However, Cohen reveals he was let off pretty easily after the prank. “Interestingly enough, they never got my identification,” he recalled.
“So if you’re watching this, the Secret Service, I think next time try and ensure if somebody breaks into a political event with the vice president or president, you check for their ID.”

  • Sacha Baron Cohen's Borat Defends Rudy Giuliani's Compromising Scene as 'Innocent Sexy-Time'

    Instagram

The comedian back in character as the Kazakh journalist to speak about the former New York City mayor’s scandal involving his onscreen daughter Maria Bakalova.

    Oct 23, 2020
AceShowbiz – Borat himself has spoken up after his daughter, 15-year-old daughter Sandra Jessica Parker Sagdiyev, was caught in a shocking scandal with Rudy Giuliani. Sacha Baron Cohen is back as the fictional Kazakh journalist in a new video to defend the 76-year-old politician.
“Jagshemash. I here to defend America’s mayor, Rudolph Giuliani,” he says in the video posted on “Borat” social media accounts on Thursday, October 22. Describing the compromising scene in “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” as “an innocent sex-time encounter between a consenting man and my 15-year-old daughter,” he blames “fake news media” for turning it “into something disgusting.”
He mimicks Pinocchio’s nose which grows longer every time he lies, before warning people, “Anyone else try this and Rudolph will not hesitate to reach into his legal briefs and whip out his subpenis.” He captions the video with “OFFICIAL STATEMENT FROM BORAT SAGDIYEV.”

Giuliani is accused of acting inappropriate after he’s seen lying in bed and reaching down into his pants while in a hotel room with Borat’s fictional daughter, played by 24-year-old actress Maria Bakalova.
The personal lawyer to Donald Trump quickly defended himself, claiming that “the Borat video is a complete fabrication.” He explained in a series of Twitter posts on Wednesday, “I was tucking in my shirt after taking off the recording equipment. At no time before, during, or after the interview was I ever inappropriate. If Sacha Baron Cohen implies otherwise he is a stone-cold liar.”
He suggested that his depiction in the film was orchestrated by Joe Biden’s team. “This is an effort to blunt my relentless exposure of the criminality and depravity of Joe Biden and his entire family,” so he claimed.
“Deadline Hollywood reports CAA had a distribution screening in September where there was no mention of the scene holding any importance,” he continued. “We are preparing much bigger dumps off of the hard drive from hell, of which Joe Biden will be unable to defend or hide from. I have the receipts.”
The “Borat” sequel will premiere October 23 on Amazon.

  • Borat Crashes Mike Pence's Speech at CPAC in First Trailer for Sequel

    [embedded content]

Sacha Baron Cohen is revealed to be the person who disguised as a Donald Trump impersonator and interrupted Pence’s speech during Conservative Political Action Conference in February.
    Oct 2, 2020
AceShowbiz – Sacha Baron Cohen returns with more satirical and adult jokes in the first official trailer for “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm”. The actor reprises his role as Kazakhstani television personality Borat Sagdiyev, who in the film is going to America for a new “mission.”
This time, Borat’s daughter, Sandra Jessica Parker Sagdiyev played by Irina Nowak, tags along her father in the trip as the fictional news reporter declares that he’s going to give her daughter as a present to “someone close to the throne.” Before he manages to pull it off, though, he learns the shocking news that his daughter is pregnant, possibly with his baby.
Borat then proceeds to carry out his mission by choosing a dress for his daughter and picks a disguise for him. It’s then revealed that Cohen was the person who disguised as a Donald Trump impersonator and interrupted Mike Pence’s speech during Conservative Political Action Conference in February. With his daughter slung over his shoulder, he shouts in the crowd, “Michael Penis, I brought the girl for you!”
Cohen also touches on the COVID-19 crisis in the upcoming movie as his character physically fights the virus with a frying pan. Toward the end of the trailer, footage of Borat’s interview with Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller is featured.
Miller has confirmed that he unwittingly filmed cameo for the “Borat” sequel last year. “Yep, its official, I got ‘Boratted’!” he said in a statement released on Thursday, October 1. “You’ll see I’m in the end of the trailer released today for Sasha Baron Cohen’s new Borat 2 movie.”

      See also…

He continued, “Glad I’m in good company with Vice-President Pence, former Vice President Dick Cheney, former Mayor Rudy Guiliani, Senator Bernie Sanders, Trent Lott, Alan Keyes and other national political leaders – all of whom have been tricked into a fake interview by this guy in one of his disguises over the years. The interview took place last fall and it was one of the strangest I’ve ever had.”
“I don’t like Cohen’s attacks on conservatives, but if 2020 has taught us anything, its that we need to laugh when we can,” he added, seemingly not taking offense with the prank. “Good thing I’m not one of those politicians who take themselves too seriously! Not going to keep me from fighting the good fight!”

Back in July, Rudy Giuliani called the cops when Cohen as his character Borat showed up in a pink bikini while trying to interview him. The former mayor and personal attorney to President Trump said he agreed to the interview thinking it was a serious interview about the administration’s response to COVID-19.
“It was a pink bikini, with lace, underneath a translucent mesh top, it looked absurd. He had the beard, bare legs, and wasn’t what I would call distractingly attractive,” he recalled, though he didn’t immediately recognize the gate-crasher as Cohen. “This person comes in yelling and screaming, and I thought this must be a scam or a shake-down, so I reported it to the police. He then ran away.”
“Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” will premiere October 23 on Amazon.
