'Saved by the Bell' Reboot Picked Up for Season 2

    NBC

The rebooted television show has just been renewed for the second season and received another 10-episode order following the success of the first installment.

    Jan 20, 2021
AceShowbiz – The stars of the “Saved by the Bell” reboot are returning to class for a second season of the relaunched franchise.
Bosses at U.S. streaming service Peacock, part of the NBCUniversal network, have given show officials a new 10-episode order following the success of the revamp, which is set in Bayside High School in California and features the return of original series stars Elizabeth Berkley, Mario Lopez, Mark-Paul Gosselaar, and Tiffani Thiessen.
“I’m thrilled that Saved by the Bell has been renewed,” writer and executive producer Tracey Wigfield writes in a statement. “I’ve been blown away by all the love for the show and can’t wait to go back and make more episodes.”
NBCUniversal executive Lisa Katz adds, “Saved by the Bell brought a fresh and modern take to the beloved original series that resonated with viewers of all ages.”

“Season 1 tackled topical, relevant issues with wit, heart, humor and just the right amount of nostalgia. And we look forward to bringing fans back to Bayside next season.”
The renewal news emerges days after original castmember Dustin Diamond revealed he was battling stage four cancer. He did not reprise his role as Screech, which he played for four seasons until 1993, for the reboot due to financial demands.
Original member Lark Voorhies was also absent from the reboot. The actress, who starred as the fashion-forward Lisa Turtle, admitted to feeling “slighted and hurt” after learning she’d not been invited to take part in the new show.
She has also been excluded from numerous bonding events her castmates have had since the show ended, such as a dinner last year 2019 to celebrate “30 years of friendship.”
On being left out of such social occasions, the screen star mused, “They have the right to do that and they’re happy in their element and they can have it, certainly… (But) family isn’t kept complete without its lead.”

'Saved by the Bell' Deletes Controversial Scene About Selena Gomez's Kidney Surgery

    Instagram

Fans of Selena, who are also known as Selenators, previously put the show on blast over the insensitive scenes on the reboot in addition to trending ‘RESPECT SELENA GOMEZ’ on Twitter.

    Dec 1, 2020
AceShowbiz – “Saved by the Bell” reboot has made adjustment following backlash over scenes featuring references to Selena Gomez’s kidney transplant. In response to fans outrage, Peacock has now decided to remove the said scenes, PEOPLE confirms.
One of the scenes on the reboot saw two students at Bayside High arguing over whether the singer transplant donor was her ex-boyfriend Justin Bieber’s mom or singer Demi Lovato. Meanwhile, another scene featured someone writing on the walls in the school’s hallway, “Does Selena Gomez even have a kidney?”
Fans of Selena, who are also known as Selenators, put the show on blast on Saturday, November 28 in addition to trending “RESPECT SELENA GOMEZ” on Twitter, demanding an apology from the show and network. “You have no professional ethics. You should be ashamed to air a show where a person is mocked for their serious illness,” one of them wrote. “It is not only offensive to Selena Gomez, but to all those who have had to go through a process as difficult as that.”

Following the backlash, Peacock, NBCUniversal and the show’s executive producers released a joint statement in which they expressed remorse over the insensitive scenes. “We apologize. It was never our intention to make light of Selena’s health. We have been in touch with her team and will be making a donation to her charity, The Selena Gomez Fund for Lupus Research at USC,” the statement read.
Francia Raisa, Selena’s close friend as well as her kidney donor, reacted to the apology. Writing on Twitter on Saturday, the “Grown-ish” star wrote, “Appreciate the apology but let’s not forget about the donors that potentially felt offended and dismissed from the spray paint written on the wall.”
“As a kidney donor I want to show love and let other donors know that you are not alone. You are seen. You are appreciated. You are so brave and your selfless act is very much appreciated and valued!” she went on saying.
Selena underwent a kidney transplant due to her lupus diagnosis back in 2017. “My kidneys were just done,” she explained at the time. “That was it, and I didn’t want to ask a single person in my life. The thought of asking someone to do that was really difficult for me. She volunteered and did it. And let alone someone wanting to volunteer, it is incredibly difficult to find a match. The fact that she was a match, I mean that’s unbelievable. That’s not real.”

Lark Voorhies Felt Hurt by 'Saved by the Bell' Reboot Snub

    Instagram

The Lisa Marie Turtle depicter felt sidelined by her former co-stars for being excluded from the reboot project and other cast member celebratory events.
    Feb 20, 2020
AceShowbiz – Lark Voorhies was left feeling “slighted and hurt” after learning she’d not been invited to take part in the reboot of her much-loved TV show “Saved by the Bell”.
The 45-year-old actress starred as the fashion-forward Lisa Turtle in 86 episodes of the programme from 1989 to 1992.
But when it came to rebooting the series, Lark wasn’t included – despite her former co-stars Tiffani Thiessen, Elizabeth Berkley, Mario Lopez, and Mark-Paul Gosselaar all returning.
Reflecting on the snub on “The Dr. Oz Show” on Tuesday, February 18, 2020, Lark, who was primarily on the programme to talk about her bipolar diagnosis, read a passage from one of her journals, sharing, “I have to admit I did feel a bit slighted and hurt when I was not invited to be part of the Saved by the Bell reunion, as well as other cast members events.”
“Yet, of course, I also realised that having this puzzling disorder may have played a major part in that factual decision. With that in mind, I am truly thankful for having had the chance to work on a show that has been so successful.”
Lark has also been excluded from numerous bonding events her castmates have had since the show ended, such as a dinner last year 2019 to celebrate “30 years of friendship.”
And on being left out of such social occasions, the screen star mused, “They have the right to do that and they’re happy in their element and they can have it, certainly… (But) family isn’t kept complete without its lead.”
Dustin Diamond, who played Screech in the teen TV show, is also not expected to be part of the reboot.
The “Saved by the Bell” revival will air on NBC’s planned streaming service, Peacock.
