Inside Netflix's You – murder, betrayal and star's 'attraction to darkness'

The TV show, which released in the US in September 2018 before hitting Netflix UK just months later, certainly had viewers on the edge of their seats in season one – and that didn’t change in season two.

Fans are now preparing to watch Joe for a third series, but there is a twist – this time, Joe will be joined by Love Quinn – who might be as dangerous as he is – and their baby.

So as viewers prepare for the inevitable death of some of the new characters which will be introduced to us, Daily Star has looked back at some of the fan-favourite characters – and remembered those who have died.

Penn Badgley as Joe Goldberg

Penn’s character Joe is still alive and kicking, even if only barely. He was given the shock of his life when he found out that his girlfriend of the series, Love Quinn, was also a murderer – making them a match made in heaven.

Aside from when he’s playing the dark and disturbing Joe though, what does Penn do?

Penn and his wife Domino Kirke welcomed their son James in the summer of 2020 after suffering two devastating miscarriages.

Despite welcoming his son into their home, it didn’t slow down Penn’s schedule, though it was certainly unpredictable due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

He was able to get back to work as Joe, but he has confessed that having a baby of his own made his day job of playing a serial killer harder.

He told Access: “The funny thing is I was curious what my new fatherhood, how that would influence my experience with Joe and acting with him, and sometimes it was almost not helpful because I was having such a light and joyful experience – still am – and Joe is so petrified.”

Elizabeth Lail as Guinevere Beck

Elizabeth Lail gave a stunning performance as Guinevere Beck in season one, so much so that some fans thought she might make it out alive – but she did not.

It seemed, for a time, that Joe was only going after some people in her life he believed were not good for her – until she found out about his serial killer ways, and he killed her.

Lail, who previously starred in Once Upon a Time, was torn about the decision to murder her character, but ultimately knew it was the only choice.

In an incredibly unlikely career swap, it seems Beck got her own back on Joe – or Elizabeth on Penn – when Elizabeth was cast as Lola Morgan in the Gossip Girl reboot.

It is expected she will be taking on a recurring role – so it looks like we will see a lot of her on our TV screens.

Victoria Pedretti as Love Quinn

Fans felt sorry for Victoria Pedretti’s Love Quinn when they first met her – it was a natural assumption that she would be killed off at the end of the series… until the ultimate plot twist.

When Love turned out to be a killer too, viewers were gobsmacked – but it seems it’s something that Victoria herself is quite a fan of.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, she confessed that she loves to play shady characters.

She said: “Even my favourite things that are funny are also pretty dark. I think that’s just because that reflects life truthfully to me.”

Victoria also confessed to “feeling so sorry” for Love during the season finale as Joe begins his, “Hey, you”, at the end, telling Entertainment Weekly: “After all she goes through, nothing is ever enough, but that’s him. He is never satisfied.”

Luca Padovan as Paco

Joe and Paco developed a sweet friendship – but it soon went downhill
(Image: Netflix)

Many fans will remember Paco as the sweet young kid who seemed to humanise Joe – but he hasn’t been seen since the end of series one.

Paco was watching his mum in an abusive relationship and as the series developed, Joe got wind of what was going on.

In the finale, Joe ended up killing the abusive boyfriend in front of Paco’s eyes, before ultimately leaving the city and meeting Love – but we haven’t heard much from Paco since.

So what is the actor, Luca Padovan, up to instead?

Most of Luca’s credits are from Broadway, while he also appeared in Crazy Ex Girlfriend for a time.

The young actor is still in the early days of his career, but he’s certainly building up his credits.

Shay Mitchell as Peach Salinger

Shay Mitchell, best known for playing Emily Fields on Pretty Little Liars, appeared during season one as Peach Salinger – but only for a few episodes before she was brutally murdered by Joe.

She played an overbearing friend of Beck’s, but ultimately met her end after a run-in with Joe – but what is the actress up to now?

Shay has taken part in Dollface and Trese since her time in You, but otherwise she has spent a lot of time on social media and particularly making the most of TikTok since the pandemic.

The actress also gave birth to her first daughter last year.

Jenna Ortega as Ellie Alves

Ellie survived in You, but the same can’t be said for her sister Delilah. Like Paco, Joe took a liking to Ellie and attempted to help her as best he could.

It sometimes got him in trouble with her older sister Delilah, and once he realised that she was becoming an inconvenience for him, he locked her away – but before he could even decide what to do with her, Love had killed her.

As Joe and Love have moved away once again, it’s unlikely we will see Ellie return – so what is the actress, Jenna, doing with her time instead?

With multiple TV credits, Jenna has been busy since her time on You.

She’s starred in Yes Day, The Babysitter: Killer Queen and now she’s gearing up to take part in the new Scream movie – following her debut in the thriller series, it’s been a busy time for her.

Carmela Zumbado as Delilah Alves

Carmela played Delilah, an investigative reporter and Ellie’s older sister on You.

She was doing her best to support her sister as it appeared to be just the two of them – but she was brutally killed off.

Delilah’s storyline gave the shock of the lifetime as Love became a murderer after Joe locked her up – but what has the actress done in the meantime?

Her appearance in You was Carmela’s breakthrough role, and alongside that she also appeared in The Wall of Mexico.

Ambyr Childers as Candace Stone

In season one, questions whether Candace was alive or not surrounded the entire fanbase, until she showed up towards the end of the season.

Adamant to not let Joe get away with what he did to her, she wanted to take him down – but before she got a chance, Love killed her too, right in front of Joe.

It seems that Candace truly won’t be returning for another series, but what will Ambyr be doing instead?

Ambyr has taken on quite a few crime dramas in her time, but off-screen, she’s a family woman through and through.

On her Instagram she posts countless loving snaps with her family, her lifestyle and positive quotes – a far cry from the harrowing life of Candace Stone.
