Jamie Oliver's Christmas special set wrecked as disaster strikes during filming

Jamie Oliver has been left gutted after filming for his Christmas Special was ruined by a nightmare hailstorm – which pelted down hailstones the size of ‘golf balls’.

The TV chef, 46, had been trying to film his Christmas Special in Essex despite it being the UK’s hottest day of the year on Tuesday when disaster struck and the hailstorm hit.

The famous foodie even tagged teen activist Greta Thunberg on social media after the devastating storm, declaring that global warming had ‘started’.

The sun had been beating down all day before the sudden storm hit – which went on to last a whopping 15 minutes – and it didn’t just interrupt filming but it also damaged set materials and even left his crew injured with bruised legs.

Taking to Instagram Stories, Jamie said: “Guys, we’re filming the Christmas Special. It’s currently being the hottest day of the year, then this comes in, the biggest hail, biggest wind, loads of water… Merry Christmas”.

Filming indoors from the safety of the property, he continued: “Craziest weather, thunder, lightning, wind, rain, then massive hail and this is all on the hottest day of the year. I just can’t get my head round it,”.

It came after Essex, where Jamie had been filming the special, had been experiencing soaring temperatures of up to 29C – not quite the kind of temperatures you’d expect over the Christmas period.

The chef then proceeded to show his followers the aftermath of the storm on camera which had ripped through the set – destroying Jamie’s filming kit along with several gazebos.

Dad-of-five Jamie admitted he’d never seen weather like it in all of his 46 years living in Essex, and he told 18-year-old activist Greta Thunberg “It’s started”, referencing global warming which she regularly posts about herself.

Jamie even revealed the hailstones had injured his colleague by bruising their legs.

Showing fans a snap of his colleague Hugo’s bruised limbs, Jamie penned: “Wow even our dear @hugo_harrison got down over by massive hail stones?! Like bl**dy golf balls”.

Jamie also shared footage of the storm – which had been caught on security camera – with his fans, before he announced they had been forced to cancel the shoot.

Jamie’s director Neil told Jamie: “We’ve had to finish, we can’t go on. All the kit is being tested we’re finding out what has been broken and needs to be replaced so that we can get all new kit for tomorrow morning and start again,”

He then added that they would have to do more overtime to get the project finished.

However, the chef reassured his fans that the show will go on, saying: “No matter what, Christmas will go on”.
