Kate Garraway wishes Derek could hug her after 'moments of great loneliness and fear'

Kate Garraway says “you can probably guess what I’m praying for” as she hopes for husband Derek Draper to give her a hug.

The Good Morning Britain presenter had her first day to herself in nearly two years after watching Derek become seriously ill last year, battling Covid.

The TV star’s husband was in hospital for a year and has now returned home, but needs round the clock care.

Kate was seen walking in the countryside as she opened up for BBC 2 show Walking With…., which airs Wednesday.

Wandering in the Cotswolds countryside, Kate said: “I’ve had moments of great loneliness and fear.

“It’s hard because the person I wanted to give me a hug is the person that can’t – and that’s Derek.

“There’s something about coming here and reminding yourself that you can feel the countryside wrapping its arms around you and giving you love back.

“I feel very grateful for today.”

The 52-year-old features in the first episode of the six part series and explains how she copes with being so overwhelmed.

She continued: “I think this is probably the first time, certainly since Derek contracted Covid, that I’ve had a whole day to myself with no purpose other than taking in the sights and sounds, just the joy of the countryside

“I was doing a lot of mindfulness and trying to create some space in my head when it feels life is quite overwhelming.

“It’s much easier to do when you’re somewhere like this.

“It is much easier to hang on to the hope of a miracle. A great sense that anything can happen.”

Kate starts her trip at Painswick Beacon in Gloucestershire and walks to the hillside above Great Witcombe.

She can be seen lying under a tree and enjoying watching it move in the wind.

The star explained how the moving branches were “comforting” for her and is “enough to kind of distract you from your worries”.

The mum-of two, who lives with her family in London, reflects on the mental health side of Covid.

She said: “One of the strange things about Covid is… it’s been a time of huge fear where we’ve suddenly thought, ‘what is going on in the world?’.

“But actually that’s life anyway. You don’t know what’s around the corner.”

The couple used to attend church regularly but Kate admits: “I haven’t been to church since Derek got sick.

“We used to go regularly. It does feel like there’s an incredible sense of peace.

“It makes me feel quite emotional.”

The TV host also says she thinks there is something “very powerful in prayer”.

She added: “You can probably guess what I’m praying for.”

Walking With… Kate Garraway airs on BBC 2 on Wednesday starting at 7pm.
