Meghan Markle's The Bench 'a flop' as TV hosts warn she 'must come up with more'

Meghan Markle’s children’s book was dubbed a “flop” by a TV news anchor in Australia as the presenters speculated what the Duchess’ next Netflix project would be like.

Allison Langdon, one of the presenters of The Today Show on Nine Network, was debating how successful the recently announced show will be.

She said: “Meghan Markle plans to create a new animated kids show, we know her book was a flop – do you reckon this will be the same?”

“That’s a bit rough!” interjected her co-host Karl Stefanovic.

“Well it wasn’t a bestseller, was it?” she hit back while he laughed.

Russell Myers, the royal editor of the Daily Mirror, replied via a video link: “Certainly not in the UK, it didn’t get anywhere near the best-selling list, however, the Americans have flocked in their droves to buy it, that just tells you about this couple’s popularity.

“They’re at rock bottom here in the UK, I’m not too sure they’re so au fait in Australia but in the US they seem to be continuing to be flavour of the month.”

“However, for a 169-word book, I don’t think it can be turned into a motion picture anytime soon, so I’m not too sure we’ll be seeing it on Spotify or Netflix.”

“They are going to have to come up with that content before they get that cash, you would think,” said Karl.

Meghan’s book, The Bench, was inspired from a father’s day poem she originally wrote for Prince Harry and drew strongly on the relationship he had with their son Archie.

But it seems her new Netflix show, called Pearl, will be something entirely different.

The series is named after its main character, a 12-year-old girl called Pearl who travels through history to meet influential women.

In a statement, the Duchess said, “Like many girls her age, our heroine Pearl is on a journey of self-discovery as she tries to overcome life’s daily challenges.

“I’m thrilled that Archewell Productions, partnered with the powerhouse platform of Netflix, and these incredible producers, will together bring you this new animated series, which celebrates extraordinary women throughout history.”
