Susanna Reid talks GB News launch and says programme 'didn't chime' with fans

Susanna Reid shared her thoughts on the launch of rival channel GB News during Monday’s Good Morning Britain, as the conversation turned to the lockdown.

Chaired by former BBC star Andrew Neil, GB News debuted on June 13, with the likes of Kirsty Gallacher, Simon McCoy and ITV’s Alastair Stewart as part of the rotation of presenters.

Susanna, 50, admitted she tuned in to watch the channel’s first day on air, witnessing the launch of the UK’s first new channel since Sky’s inception more than three decades ago.

“GB News launched last night at eight o’clock,” she said.

One programme, hosted by Dan Wootton, didn’t sit well with Susanna, who felt the feature “railing against the lockdown” wouldn’t resonate with the public.

“And one of the launch programmes, Dan Wootten’s programme, did an interview and a monologue about railing against the lockdown,” she said, during a discussion with co-presenter Richard Madeley and journalists Kevin Maguire and Andrew Pierce.

Instead, Susanna argued the British public was predominantly pro-lockdown, understanding the importance of adhering to restrictions in the fight against Covid.

“But I wonder whether electorally, politically amongst the public, that doesn’t chime at the moment,” she said.

“Whether that’s still an outlying voice. As loud as it is amongst some sections of the population.”

Kevin agreed with Susanna, and pointed out: “All of the opinion polls show the majority of people support extending the lockdown to try and get rid of it.”

The debate came about ahead of Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s announcement on Monday evening, in which he will share the government’s decision on lifting restrictions on June 21.

Richard admitted the speculation of the extended lockdown had affected his own family, as his son Jack is due to get married in a few weeks’ time.

The broadcaster explained it was an “incredibly stressful” time for Jack and his fiancée, as they are uncertain as to whether their nuptials can go ahead.

Richard confessed: “The effect on my son and his wife to be has been terrible really – it’s really screwed them up.”

Good Morning Britain airs on weekdays at 6am on ITV.
