BBC Breakfast's Charlie Stayt fumes over on-set 'argument' as he says 'it drives me mad'

BBC Breakfast host Charlie Stayt was left fuming over an on-set “argument” alongside his co-presenter Naga Munchetty.

The programme hosts welcomed author Ian Rankin onto the red sofa on Thursday (October 6), but it wasn’t long before Charlie admitted the pair had been rowing behind the scenes.

Charlie kicked off the conversation by telling viewers: “While Carol [Kirkwood] was talking about the weather, we were talking about jigsaws.”

Naga put in: “I love a jigsaw!” before turning to Charlie to say: “You hate them?”

Charlie went on to explain: “Ian Rankin sits down on the sofa, next thing you know, we’re having an argument about jigsaws!”

Ian chimed in with: “I tell you, I could start an argument in an empty room.” Charlie asked him: “Could you? Are you just naturally argumentative?”

The celebrated author said: “No, it’s just things that I like, other people don’t like. And as we found out, Charlie, you don’t like jigsaws!”

Charlie answered: “They drive me… there’s something about jigsaws that drives me mad. Because I’m not good at them! But it just works for you, does it, it just absolutely works?”

The author then said: “Especially during lockdown, my wife and I found it was just a way of switching off, not thinking about Covid and stuff. My son would come round, he was part of our bubble, and the three of us could sit and do a jigsaw together.”

Things turned even frostier as Charlie’s co-host Naga called Ian’s wife “awful” after she banned him from writing a book next year.

Explaining that his wife wants to go on holiday rather than on book tours next year after postponing a year of travelling due to the pandemic, Ian explained: “She said next year, no writing, no festivals, no tours, just holidays. So I’m kind of looking forward to that!”

Naga joked: “She sounds like an awful wife!” as Ian reassured her: “No, she’s great! And she’s done all the planning.”

“She wants you to go on holiday and have a break,” Naga agreed.

Ian quipped: “Yeah, but you know what, if I do get an idea for a story I’ll be sitting there pretending to be tweeting or something, but I’ll actually be typing it into my phone.”

BBC Breakfast airs daily from 6am on BBC One.
