Corrie star Jack P Shepherd forced to pull out of soap filming amid health battle

Coronation Street star Jack P Shepherd was forced to call in sick to the popular ITV soap after he contracted Covid-19 on Monday.

The soap star – who plays the role of David Platt on the Cobbles – has revealed the telling symptom that tipped him off that he may have the highly contagious virus.

In a recent video to Instagram, the 34-year-old explained when he first started showing signs of the illness.

And it didn’t take long before his suspicions were confirmed as the dad-of-three took a break from the soap to isolate at home and recover from his illness.

The TV star recalled the moment he first suspected he had the illness in a clip on social media as he shared the moment with his loyal legion of fans online.

He explained: “I have the vid [Covid-19], it caught me.

“I don’t have any symptoms. Nothing. I was in the shower Monday morning and I can’t smell the shampoo and I go, ‘This is weird’.

“Shower gel – nothing. It’s an FCUK box set, Hanni’s mum got it me for Christmas.

“So I’m using that and I can’t smell it, but I’ve never used it before so I don’t know whether it’s just s**t or I can’t smell it.”

He went on: “So I get out and go, ‘I’ll clean my teeth now’ and I can’t taste any toothpaste or mouthwash. And I go, ‘Ooh, this is a big one’.”

It was at this point that he called up the producers of the long-standing show and informed them of his symptoms over the phone.

He said: “I just ring up work and go, ‘I can’t smell or taste’ [and] they’re like, ‘Right, do a lateral flow’. It says I’ve got it, two lines, see you later.”

Luckily Jack soon recovered from the illness and was back on the soap the following week after he received two negative lateral flow tests.

He joked: “I can taste my shower gel, so everything is back.

“Other than the smell or taste I wouldn’t have known that I’d got it. So that’s been my week.”

Coronation Street airs on weekdays from 7pm on ITV and ITV Hub.
