GMB's Martin Lewis praised for savage swipe at government in powerful NTAs speech

Money Saving Expert Martin Lewis won big at tonight’s National Television Award’s after he scooped the gong for Best TV Expert, but it was his speech that won over fans when he made a brutal dig at UK politicians.

The finance expert. 50, beat the likes of David Attenborough and Kaleb Cooper for the coveted award, expressing his shock that he had won.

He went on to refer to how much of a difficult time it was for so many Brits across the nation due to the cost of living crisis.

Switching the celebratory mood to a more serious tone, he said: “We need somebody to get a grip on the economy and make things a little better.

“But I shall leave that for my show next Tuesday. Tonight this nerd is going to party!”

Fans flocked to Twitter to praise Martin, with one writing: ” Martin Lewis SO deserved it. #NTAs #NTAs2022.”

While another commented: “WELL SAID MARTIN #NTAs2022.”

A third wrote: “I’m actually pleased Martin Lewis won #NTAs2022.”

Tensions over who would win the award have been high this year following the queue-gate scandal that surrounded the presenters.

The Best Presenter award was handed to telly favourites Ant and Dec for the 21st year running.

The pair won out against some tough competition this year, with the full nomination list made up of Graham Norton, Alison Hammond and Bradley Walsh.

However, This Morning star Alison Hammond always hoped she could steal the gong from under their noses, with the support of her co-star Holly Willoughby.

Holly told her on the show: “This is your year!”

As Alison commented to The Mirror: “Could this be the year Ant and Dec hand over the gong to me?”

Fans of the programme were fuming at the news, as they said Alison was “robbed”.

Taking to Twitter, one wrote: “Alison Hammond should have won that one, Ant and Dec ain’t funny!”

Kate Garraway was a big winner tonight after scooping the Best Authored Documentary award.

The documentary focused on her life caring for Derek, her husband suffering from long Covid and being placed into a coma.
