Strictly's Gemma Atkinson opens up on relationship struggles with Gorka Marquez

Gemma Atkinson confessed that she once “resented” Strictly Come Dancing’s Gorka Marquez for returning to the BBC show after the birth of her daughter, Mia.

The former Hollyoaks star, 37, appeared on ITV’s Lorraine on Monday (April 11) talking about her new book The Ultimate Body Plan For New Mums.

During the discussion, Gemma explained that life wasn’t always easy for the showbiz couple who had met on the 2017 series of the glitzy BBC One programme.

Speaking to Christine Lampard, who was filling in for Lorraine during the holidays, Gemma explained that her mum and Gorka’s co-star Giovanni Pernice were imperative with helping to get their relationship back on track.

Gemma discusses relationship woes with Gorka after birth of their daughter, Mia

Speaking about their woes at the time, Gemma said she and Gorka both “resented” each other when he needed to return to his day job.

While Gemma was upset and sought the advice of her mum after thinking “this is my life now” as she battled parenthood alone, she had not factored in that Gorka was also down in the dumps.

Gemma explained that Giovanni and her mum intervened at one point

Giovanni contacted Gemma to say that he was “worried” about his pal who would not come out of his hotel room.

The current Strictly champion explained to Gemma that Gorka wasn’t acting like his normal self.

She said: “Gio, Giovanni, he text me and he said ‘Gorka’s not been himself, just letting you know’.

Gemma hadn’t realised that Gorka had been left saddened by leaving his daughter

“And I Facetimed him and they were all out one night with the lads and he was in the hotel on his own and he just got really upset, he said ‘I don’t want to be here, I want to be at home with you and our baby’.

She explained: “It dawned on me that it’s just as tough for the partner who goes to back to work than it is for the partner who is at home.”

The actress added: “You kind of resent each others situations a little bit.

“But it was that case where as soon as he came off tour, I said ‘there you go’ [passing him their daughter].

Lorraine airs weekdays on ITV at 9am.
