Coronation Street’s Roy Cropper star issues five-word response over prison twist

Coronation Street favourite David Neilson has responded to his character Roy Cropper’s tense prison storyline.

Recently, Roy has found himself in hot water, being arrested and charged as the prime suspect for the alleged murder of missing teen Lauren Bolton. Troubled teen mysteriously disappeared from the cobbles earlier this year, leaving her love interest Bobby worried after discovering her flat unlocked and empty.

Lauren’s departure was never shown on screen, and it appears she didn’t inform anyone about her plans to leave Weatherfield, except for Roy. After Bobby reported Lauren missing, Roy became a person of interest because of his kind-hearted nature, as he was spotted innocently tidying up Lauren’s flat – an act some interpreted as him trying to get rid of evidence.

Roy’s kindness landed him in further trouble last week when Lauren’s supposed mother ‘Kerry’ arrived on the cobbles. Trying to help, Roy offered her a place to stay, but it backfired horribly.

‘Kerry’ turned out to be a woman named Alice, who was staying with Roy under false pretences and secretly filming everything, accusing him of being a murderer.

After uncovering the truth about her identity, Alice began to taunt Roy and even started filming him, bringing up his late wife Hayley Cropper. The mention of Hayley left Roy shocked, leading him to snatch the phone from Alice, reports the Mirror.

The soap legend spoke about his character’s storyline on ITV’s This Morning on Tuesday (April 16)

In the ensuing struggle, Alice fell and cut her head. She then reported Roy to the police for assault and after questioning, it was revealed that Roy had been charged with Lauren’s murder.

Discussing Roy’s predicament on Tuesday’s episode (April 16) of This Morning with soap expert Sharon Marshall, actor David Neilson, who plays Roy, had a succinct five-word response: “He’s his own worst enemy!”.

David continued: “I mean, he needs support from himself, he puts himself there. I’m amazed that I [Roy] haven’t been in prison before because everyone else [ Coronation Street characters] have!”.

It appears that next week, Roy could be “tricked into confessing” to Lauren’s murder in a shocking twist.

Coronation Street airs every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8pm on ITV1 and ITV X.
