Holly Willoughby emotional as This Morning caller says her grandson and dog died

Holly Willoughby grew emotional during Monday’s This Morning, as a caller confessed she was grieving the loss of both her grandson and her pet dog.

Hosting a segment on pet bereavement, psychologist and TV personality Emma Kenny invited the brave caller – whose name was Ann – to speak about her grief on the show.

Tearing up down the phone line, Ann explained her pet dog had died suddenly at the age of eight, and she felt she had lost her best friend.

She went on to explain that her beloved grandson then died at the age of 14, heartbreakingly passing away on her late dog’s birthday.

Ann said: “On November my grandson took poorly, very ill. He died on my dog’s birthday on the 10th of November.”

“That is just so awful,” Holly replied, heartbroken over the revelation.

Finding the grief overwhelming, Ann looked to the This Morning experts for solutions, as Holly listened sympathetically.

She explained: “I am so overwhelmed with grief. I was grieving for my dog, we were never apart. I sit here and cuddle her coat and toys. I can’t bear to put anything away…Then my grandson died on her birthday.”

Revealing her daughter had bought her a new puppy, Ann then broke down in tears, fearing she wouldn’t be able to give the puppy the same amount of affection as her late dog.

She said: “I feel guilty for another dog in my house when I’m still grieving.”

In a soft voice, Holly offered her reassurance and said: “You don’t have a certain amount of love, that’s the thing – love just grows.

“If you’re worried you won’t love that dog the same, that’s just impossible.

“You will be amazed, your heart just grows a bit more.”

Later, Phil let viewers know Ann would be receiving professional help and guidance from a team of trained professionals at ITV, saying: “Ann is talking to our team downstairs.”

Meanwhile, over on Twitter, viewers were in tears over the segment, as they sent Ann their love and messages of support after hearing her devastating news.

One said: “Tears here. Sorry for your loss.”

“Please don’t make me cry,” wrote a second.

And a third penned: “Aw bless her, you can tell she’s in pain #ThisMorning.”

This Morning airs on weekdays at 10am on ITV.
